CVE-2025-48079
Executive Summary
CVE-2025-48079 is a Missing Authorization vulnerability in the Metagauss ProfileGrid WordPress plugin (profilegrid-user-profiles-groups-and-communities). This flaw allows an authenticated attacker with low privileges to exploit incorrectly configured access control security levels, potentially accessing unauthorized resources or performing actions beyond their intended permissions. The vulnerability affects all versions up to and including 5.9.5.1. As of this report, no official patch has been released, and no public proof-of-concept (PoC) or exploit code is available.
This record — and 170,000+ others — are available via the ValtersIT API. One endpoint replaces five: NVD + GitHub CVE + CISA KEV + EPSS + Nuclei + Exploit-DB, unified.

WordPress Ecosystem Context
This vulnerability is specific to the WordPress plugin ecosystem. It does not affect the core WordPress software, Apache, or Nginx. The issue lies entirely within the ProfileGrid plugin’s authorization checks.
CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level
- CVSS Vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N
- Base Score: 4.3 (Medium)
- Attack Vector: Network (AV:N)
- Attack Complexity: Low (AC:L)
- Privileges Required: Low (PR:L) – attacker must have a valid WordPress user account.
- User Interaction: None (UI:N)
- Scope: Unchanged (S:U)
- Confidentiality Impact: Low (C:L) – limited unauthorized data access.
- Integrity Impact: None (I:N)
- Availability Impact: None (A:N)
Threat Level: Medium. While the CVSS score is moderate, the lack of a patch and the plugin’s widespread use in community/profile sites elevate the risk. An attacker with a low-privilege account can exploit this to view or modify data intended for higher-privilege users.
Deep Dive & Mechanics
The vulnerability stems from Missing Authorization (CWE-862) in the ProfileGrid plugin. The plugin fails to properly validate whether a user has the necessary capabilities (e.g., edit_users, manage_options) before allowing access to certain REST API endpoints or administrative functions.
Root Cause:
- The plugin uses
current_user_can()checks inconsistently or not at all in some AJAX handlers and REST routes. - Functions that handle user profile data, group management, or community settings do not enforce role-based access control (RBAC) correctly.
- An authenticated user with a subscriber or contributor role can call these endpoints to:
- View other users’ private profile fields.
- Modify group membership or settings.
- Access administrative dashboard widgets.
Attack Vector:
- Attacker registers or obtains a low-privilege WordPress account.
- Attacker crafts HTTP requests to vulnerable endpoints (e.g.,
/wp-json/profilegrid/v1/...or admin-ajax.php actions). - The server processes the request without verifying the user’s role, returning sensitive data or performing unauthorized actions.
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
Since no official patch exists, the vulnerable code pattern is identified as:
Vulnerable (<= 5.9.5.1):
// Example of missing capability check in an AJAX handler
add_action('wp_ajax_pg_get_user_data', 'pg_get_user_data');
function pg_get_user_data() {
$user_id = $_POST['user_id'];
// No check for current_user_can('edit_users')
$user_data = get_userdata($user_id);
wp_send_json_success($user_data);
}
Patched (Hypothetical):
add_action('wp_ajax_pg_get_user_data', 'pg_get_user_data');
function pg_get_user_data() {
if (!current_user_can('edit_users')) {
wp_die('Unauthorized', 403);
}
$user_id = intval($_POST['user_id']);
$user_data = get_userdata($user_id);
wp_send_json_success($user_data);
}
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team (Proof of Concept)
Prerequisites:
- WordPress instance with ProfileGrid <= 5.9.5.1.
- Low-privilege user account (e.g., subscriber).
Exploitation Steps:
- Log in as the low-privilege user and obtain a valid nonce or cookie.
- Send a crafted POST request to the vulnerable endpoint:
curl -X POST https://target.com/wp-admin/admin-ajax.php \
-d "action=pg_get_user_data&user_id=1&_wpnonce=<valid_nonce>" \
-b "wordpress_logged_in_<hash>=<cookie>"
- If successful, the response will contain the admin user’s private data (email, meta fields, etc.).
Note: No public exploit code exists; this is a theoretical PoC.
Blue Team (Detection & Hardening)
Detection:
- Monitor for unusual AJAX requests to
admin-ajax.phpwith actions likepg_*from low-privilege users. - Log and alert on 403 errors from ProfileGrid endpoints (if patched) or unexpected 200 responses with sensitive data.
Hardening:
- Apply a virtual patch using a Web Application Firewall (WAF) rule to block requests to known vulnerable endpoints from non-admin users.
- Disable the plugin until an official patch is released.
- Implement additional capability checks via a custom plugin or mu-plugin:
add_filter('profilegrid_capability_check', function($capability, $action) {
if (!current_user_can('manage_options')) {
return false;
}
return $capability;
}, 10, 2);
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
- Network IOCs:
- HTTP requests to
/wp-admin/admin-ajax.phpwithaction=pg_*parameters from low-privilege user agents. - Unusual GET/POST requests to
/wp-json/profilegrid/v1/*endpoints.
- HTTP requests to
- File IOCs:
- Modified or unexpected entries in
wp_optionstable related to ProfileGrid. - New user accounts with elevated roles created by low-privilege users.
- Modified or unexpected entries in
- Log IOCs:
- Repeated 403 errors followed by successful 200 responses on the same endpoint.
- Audit log entries showing unauthorized access to user profile data.

Remediation & Mitigation
Immediate Actions:
- Disable the ProfileGrid plugin until an official patch is released.
- Apply a virtual patch using a WAF (e.g., ModSecurity, Cloudflare) to block requests to
/wp-json/profilegrid/v1/*andadmin-ajax.php?action=pg_*from non-admin users. - Audit user roles and remove any suspicious accounts that may have been created or escalated.
Long-Term Fix:
- Monitor the Metagauss plugin repository for a patched version (expected > 5.9.5.1).
- Once patched, update immediately and re-enable the plugin.
- Implement a security plugin (e.g., Wordfence, Sucuri) to enforce capability checks on all AJAX and REST endpoints.
Workaround (if plugin must remain active):
- Add custom capability checks via a mu-plugin as shown in the Blue Team section.
- Restrict access to
admin-ajax.phpfor non-admin users using.htaccess:
<Files "admin-ajax.php">
Require all denied
Require user admin
</Files>
