CVE-2025-49008
Executive Summary
CVE-2025-49008 is a critical argument injection vulnerability in Atheos, a self-hosted browser-based cloud IDE. The vulnerability resides in the /components/codegit/traits/execute.php file, where the escapeshellcmd() function is improperly used instead of escapeshellarg(). This allows an attacker to inject additional shell arguments, leading to arbitrary command execution on the server. Atheos administrators and users of vulnerable versions are at risk of data breaches or server compromise. The vulnerability is patched in version 6.0.4, which introduces a new Common::safe_execute function that properly sanitizes all arguments using escapeshellarg().

Supply Chain & Package Security
Atheos is a self-hosted application, not distributed via NPM, PyPI, Go, or Ruby. The vulnerability is in the core application code, not in a third-party package. However, administrators should ensure that the application is updated to the latest version to mitigate this and other potential vulnerabilities.
CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level
The CVSS score is not provided in the NVD data. However, based on the nature of the vulnerability (argument injection leading to arbitrary command execution), the CVSS score is likely high (8.0-9.0). The attack vector is likely network-based, with low attack complexity, and requires low privileges. The impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability is high.
Deep Dive & Mechanics
The vulnerability is caused by the improper use of escapeshellcmd() in the execute.php file. The escapeshellcmd() function escapes the entire command string, but it does not prevent argument injection. An attacker can inject additional arguments by including spaces or special characters in the input. For example, if the input is -oProxyCommand=malicious_command, the escapeshellcmd() function will escape the entire string, but the -oProxyCommand argument will still be passed to the shell, allowing the attacker to execute arbitrary commands.
The vulnerable code is in /components/codegit/traits/execute.php. The patched version introduces a Common::safe_execute function that uses escapeshellarg() to sanitize each argument individually. The escapeshellarg() function wraps each argument in single quotes and escapes any single quotes within the argument, preventing argument injection.
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
Vulnerable Code (prior to 6.0.4):
// /components/codegit/traits/execute.php
$command = "git " . escapeshellcmd($input);
$output = shell_exec($command);
Patched Code (version 6.0.4):
// /components/codegit/traits/execute.php
$command = "git " . Common::safe_execute($input);
$output = shell_exec($command);
The Common::safe_execute function is defined as:
public static function safe_execute($command, $args) {
$escaped_args = array_map('escapeshellarg', $args);
$command = vsprintf($command, $escaped_args);
return shell_exec($command);
}
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team
To exploit this vulnerability, an attacker would need to send a crafted request to the Atheos server. The attacker could inject arguments into the git command by providing input such as -oProxyCommand=malicious_command. The escapeshellcmd() function would escape the entire string, but the -oProxyCommand argument would still be passed to the shell, allowing the attacker to execute arbitrary commands.
Example Exploit:
# Send a request to the Atheos server with a malicious input
curl -X POST "http://target.com/execute.php" -d "input=-oProxyCommand=echo%20pwned"
This would execute the echo pwned command on the server.
Blue Team
To detect exploitation attempts, monitor for unusual requests to the execute.php endpoint. Look for inputs that contain shell metacharacters or suspicious arguments. Additionally, monitor for unexpected command execution on the server.
Detection Rules:
- Monitor for requests to
/components/codegit/traits/execute.phpwith suspicious parameters. - Monitor for shell commands that are not part of normal operation.
- Monitor for unusual network connections from the server.
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
- File:
/components/codegit/traits/execute.php(vulnerable version) - Network: Unusual requests to the
execute.phpendpoint - Process: Unexpected shell commands executed by the web server
- Log: Entries in the web server log showing requests with suspicious parameters

Remediation & Mitigation
- Immediate Action: Upgrade Atheos to version 6.0.4 or later.
- Workaround: If upgrading is not possible, restrict access to the
execute.phpendpoint using a web application firewall (WAF) or by modifying the web server configuration. - Long-term: Implement input validation and sanitization for all user-supplied data. Use
escapeshellarg()instead ofescapeshellcmd()when passing arguments to shell commands. - Monitoring: Monitor for exploitation attempts using the detection rules provided above.
