CVE-2025-5257
Executive Summary
CVE-2025-5257 is a security vulnerability in Mautic, an open-source marketing automation platform. The flaw allows unauthenticated users to access previews of unpublished pages via predictable URLs (e.g., /page/preview/1). This can lead to unintended disclosure of draft content or sensitive information, and search engines may index these private preview URLs, making the content publicly discoverable. The vulnerability has a CVSS score of 6.5 (Medium) and is classified under CWE-862 (Missing Authorization). No public exploit code or PoC is currently available, and the EPSS score is 0.0%, indicating low exploitation activity. Mautic has patched the issue by enforcing proper permission checks; users should upgrade to the latest patched version.

Supply Chain & Package Security
Mautic is a PHP-based application distributed via GitHub and Composer. The vulnerability does not directly affect the supply chain, but organizations using Mautic should verify their deployment version and apply the patch promptly to prevent data leaks.
CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level
- CVSS Vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N
- Base Score: 6.5 (Medium)
- Attack Vector: Network (AV:N) – Exploitable remotely.
- Attack Complexity: Low (AC:L) – No special conditions required.
- Privileges Required: None (PR:N) – No authentication needed.
- User Interaction: None (UI:N) – No user action required.
- Scope: Unchanged (S:U) – Impact confined to the vulnerable component.
- Confidentiality Impact: Low (C:L) – Limited disclosure of unpublished content.
- Integrity Impact: None (I:N) – No data modification.
- Availability Impact: None (A:N) – No service disruption.
Threat Level: Medium. The vulnerability is easy to exploit but has limited impact (only confidentiality). However, if sensitive draft content is exposed, the business impact could be higher.
Deep Dive & Mechanics
The vulnerability resides in Mautic’s page preview functionality. When a user creates or edits a page and saves it as a draft (unpublished), Mautic generates a preview URL with a predictable pattern, such as /page/preview/{id}. The {id} is an integer that increments sequentially. The preview endpoint lacked proper authorization checks, meaning any unauthenticated user could access these URLs and view the unpublished content. Additionally, search engine crawlers could index these URLs, making the content publicly discoverable via search results.
The root cause is a missing authorization check in the controller handling preview requests. The code did not verify whether the user had permission to view the page or whether the page was published. This allowed direct access to draft content.
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
Vulnerable Code (Conceptual):
// In the preview controller
public function previewAction($id) {
$page = $this->pageRepository->find($id);
// No permission check for unpublished pages
return $this->render('page_preview.html.twig', ['page' => $page]);
}
Patched Code (Conceptual):
// In the preview controller
public function previewAction($id) {
$page = $this->pageRepository->find($id);
// Check if user has permission to view unpublished pages
if (!$this->security->isGranted('page:preview', $page)) {
throw new AccessDeniedException();
}
return $this->render('page_preview.html.twig', ['page' => $page]);
}
The patch adds a permission check using Mautic’s security layer, ensuring only authorized users can access previews of unpublished content.
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team (Exploitation)
Prerequisites:
- A Mautic instance with at least one unpublished page.
- Knowledge of the base URL (e.g.,
https://target.com/).
Exploitation Steps:
- Enumerate page IDs by iterating through integers (e.g., 1, 2, 3...).
- Access the preview URL:
https://target.com/page/preview/1 - If the page is unpublished, the content will be displayed without authentication.
- Optionally, check if search engines have indexed these URLs by using site search operators (e.g.,
site:target.com inurl:/page/preview/).
Example Request:
curl -v "https://target.com/page/preview/1"
Expected Output: The HTML content of the unpublished page.
Blue Team (Detection & Defense)
Detection:
- Monitor access logs for requests to
/page/preview/followed by a numeric ID. - Look for sequential scanning patterns (e.g., multiple requests to
/page/preview/1,/page/preview/2, etc.). - Alert on unauthenticated access to these endpoints.
Defense:
- Apply the Mautic patch immediately.
- If patching is delayed, restrict access to
/page/preview/via web server rules (e.g.,.htaccessor Nginx config). - Use a Web Application Firewall (WAF) to block requests to
/page/preview/from unauthenticated users. - Disable search engine indexing of preview URLs by adding
X-Robots-Tag: noindexheader or usingrobots.txt.
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
- URL Pattern:
/page/preview/{integer}(e.g.,/page/preview/1) - HTTP Requests: GET requests to
/page/preview/with no authentication cookies. - Log Entries: Access logs showing repeated requests to
/page/preview/from the same IP. - Search Engine Results: Unpublished page content appearing in search engine results with URLs containing
/page/preview/.

Remediation & Mitigation
Immediate Actions:
- Upgrade Mautic to the latest patched version that includes proper permission checks for preview pages.
- If upgrade is not possible, implement a temporary workaround by adding web server rules to block unauthenticated access to
/page/preview/:- Apache (.htaccess):
RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} ^/page/preview/ RewriteCond %{REMOTE_ADDR} !^127\.0\.0\.1$ RewriteRule ^ - [F] - Nginx:
location ~ ^/page/preview/ { deny all; return 403; }
- Apache (.htaccess):
- Disable search engine indexing of preview URLs by adding the following header in your web server configuration:
Header always set X-Robots-Tag "noindex, nofollow" - Monitor logs for any unauthorized access attempts and review search engine results for exposed content.
Long-Term Measures:
- Implement regular security audits and penetration testing.
- Ensure all Mautic instances are kept up-to-date with the latest patches.
- Use a Web Application Firewall (WAF) to detect and block exploitation attempts.
