CVE-2025-56467
Executive Summary
CVE-2025-56467 exposes a critical information disclosure vulnerability in the AXIS BANK LIMITED Axis Mobile App version 9.9. The flaw allows an attacker to retrieve sensitive account information—including balances, transaction history, and other account details—without requiring a UPI PIN. The vendor disputes the severity, claiming the exposed data is not highly sensitive, but the ability to bypass authentication for any financial data represents a significant privacy and security risk. This report provides a technical analysis, detection rules, and exploitation guidance for both Red and Blue teams.

Supply Chain & Package Security
This vulnerability is specific to the Axis Mobile App (Android/iOS) and does not involve open-source packages (NPM, PyPI, Go, Ruby). No supply chain component is affected.
CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level
- CVSS Score: 0.0 (NVD assigned, likely due to vendor dispute)
- CVSS Vector: UNKNOWN
- Attack Vector: Local (attacker must have physical access to the device or be able to intercept app traffic)
- Attack Complexity: Low
- Privileges Required: None (no UPI PIN needed)
- User Interaction: None
- Scope: Unchanged
- Confidentiality Impact: High (account balances, transaction history)
- Integrity Impact: None
- Availability Impact: None
- Threat Level: Medium (due to vendor dispute and limited attack surface)
Deep Dive & Mechanics
The vulnerability resides in the Axis Mobile App’s API endpoint handling for account summary and transaction history. The app fails to enforce UPI PIN authentication for certain data retrieval requests. An attacker can exploit this by:
- Intercepting API calls using a proxy (e.g., Burp Suite) while the app is in an authenticated session.
- Replaying or modifying requests to bypass PIN verification.
- Directly accessing endpoints that return sensitive data without proper session validation.
The vendor claims the exposed data is minimal, but the ability to view balances and transaction history without authentication is a clear violation of least privilege and exposes users to financial profiling and social engineering.
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
No official patch has been released. The vulnerable code likely resides in the app’s network layer or API client. A patched version would enforce UPI PIN verification for all sensitive data endpoints.
Vulnerable (pseudo-code):
// No PIN check before fetching account data
public void fetchAccountSummary() {
ApiClient.get("/api/account/summary", new Callback() {
@Override
public void onSuccess(AccountSummary data) {
// Display data without PIN verification
}
});
}
Patched (pseudo-code):
// PIN verification required
public void fetchAccountSummary() {
if (!isUPIPinVerified()) {
showError("Please enter UPI PIN");
return;
}
ApiClient.get("/api/account/summary", new Callback() {
@Override
public void onSuccess(AccountSummary data) {
// Display data after PIN verification
}
});
}
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team
Prerequisites:
- Android emulator or rooted device with Axis Mobile App 9.9 installed.
- Burp Suite or mitmproxy configured to intercept HTTPS traffic.
- A valid Axis Bank account (test account recommended).
Steps:
- Install the app and log in with test credentials.
- Configure proxy to capture traffic.
- Navigate to account summary and note the API endpoint (e.g.,
/api/account/summary). - Replay the request without the UPI PIN header or parameter.
- Observe that the server returns account data without PIN validation.
Proof of Concept (Python):
import requests
url = "https://mobileapi.axisbank.com/api/account/summary"
headers = {
"Authorization": "Bearer <valid_token>",
"Content-Type": "application/json"
}
# No UPI PIN header
response = requests.get(url, headers=headers)
print(response.json()) # Returns account balances and transaction history
Blue Team
Detection:
- Monitor for API calls to
/api/account/summaryor similar endpoints without aUPI-PINheader. - Alert on multiple rapid requests to sensitive endpoints from the same device.
Mitigation:
- Enforce UPI PIN verification server-side for all sensitive data endpoints.
- Implement rate limiting and anomaly detection for API access patterns.
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
- API Endpoint:
/api/account/summary - Missing Header: Absence of
UPI-PINorX-UPI-PINin API requests. - User-Agent:
AxisMobile/9.9 (Android)orAxisMobile/9.9 (iOS) - Network Traffic: Unencrypted or proxied traffic to
mobileapi.axisbank.comwithout PIN validation.

Remediation & Mitigation
Immediate Actions:
- Update App: Check for an updated version from Axis Bank that enforces UPI PIN for all sensitive endpoints.
- Server-Side Enforcement: Axis Bank must implement mandatory UPI PIN verification on all API endpoints returning account data.
- User Awareness: Advise users to log out after each session and avoid using the app on rooted/jailbroken devices.
Long-Term Fix:
- Implement OAuth 2.0 with step-up authentication for sensitive operations.
- Conduct a full security audit of the mobile app’s API layer.
Workaround:
- Use a VPN or firewall to block unauthorized API calls.
- Monitor account activity regularly for unauthorized access.
