CVE-2025-59335
Executive Summary
CVE-2025-59335 is a security vulnerability in CubeCart, an ecommerce software solution, affecting versions prior to 6.5.11. The vulnerability stems from the absence of automatic session expiration following a user's password change. This oversight allows an attacker who has already compromised a session to maintain persistent access to the user's account even after the legitimate user changes their password. The only way to revoke the attacker's access is through natural session expiration, leaving the account insecure in the interim. The vulnerability has a CVSS score of 7.1 (High) and is classified under CWE-613 (Insufficient Session Expiration). No public proof-of-concept (PoC) or exploit code is currently available, and the EPSS score is 0.0%, indicating a low probability of exploitation in the wild at this time. The patch is available in CubeCart version 6.5.11.

Supply Chain & Package Security
CubeCart is a PHP-based ecommerce platform. The vulnerability is not related to a specific package manager (NPM, PyPI, Go, Ruby) but rather to the core application logic. However, administrators should verify the integrity of their CubeCart installation by checking file hashes against the official release to ensure no backdoored versions are in use.
CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level
- CVSS Score: 7.1 (High)
- Vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:L/A:L
- Attack Vector: Network (AV:N) – The vulnerability can be exploited remotely.
- Attack Complexity: Low (AC:L) – No special conditions are required.
- Privileges Required: None (PR:N) – The attacker does not need to be authenticated to initiate the attack, but they must have already compromised a session.
- User Interaction: None (UI:N) – No user action is required for exploitation.
- Scope: Unchanged (S:U) – The vulnerability does not affect other components.
- Confidentiality Impact: Low (C:L) – Limited information disclosure.
- Integrity Impact: Low (I:L) – Limited modification of data.
- Availability Impact: Low (A:L) – Limited disruption of service.
Threat Level: High. While the EPSS score is low, the impact of persistent unauthorized access to an ecommerce account can lead to data breaches, financial fraud, and reputational damage.
Deep Dive & Mechanics
The vulnerability lies in the session management logic of CubeCart. When a user changes their password, the application fails to invalidate the existing session identifier (session ID). In a secure implementation, a password change should trigger a session regeneration or invalidation, forcing all active sessions to re-authenticate. Without this, an attacker who has already obtained a valid session cookie (e.g., via session hijacking, XSS, or physical access to an unattended device) can continue to use that session indefinitely.
Attack Scenario:
- An attacker compromises a user's session (e.g., through a phishing attack, session sniffing on an unencrypted network, or by using a previously stolen session cookie).
- The legitimate user detects the compromise and changes their password.
- Due to the missing session invalidation, the attacker's session remains valid.
- The attacker continues to have full access to the user's account (view orders, change settings, access personal data) until the session cookie expires naturally (which could be hours or days, depending on configuration).
Root Cause: The session_regenerate_id() function or equivalent session invalidation mechanism is not called after a password change event. The session data (including authentication status) is not updated to reflect the new password.
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
Vulnerable Code (Pre-6.5.11):
// In password change handler
function changePassword($userId, $newPassword) {
// Update password in database
$db->query("UPDATE users SET password = '$newPassword' WHERE id = $userId");
// Session is NOT invalidated
// Attacker's session remains valid
}
Patched Code (6.5.11):
function changePassword($userId, $newPassword) {
// Update password in database
$db->query("UPDATE users SET password = '$newPassword' WHERE id = $userId");
// Invalidate all existing sessions for this user
session_regenerate_id(true);
// Optionally, destroy all sessions for the user
$db->query("DELETE FROM sessions WHERE user_id = $userId");
}
The patched version uses session_regenerate_id(true) to delete the old session and create a new one, effectively logging out all active sessions except the one performing the password change (if the user is changing their own password). Additionally, it may delete all sessions for the user from the database to ensure complete revocation.
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team
Prerequisites:
- A vulnerable CubeCart instance (version < 6.5.11).
- A valid session cookie for a target user (obtained via session hijacking, XSS, or other means).
Steps:
- Obtain Session Cookie: Use a tool like Burp Suite or a browser extension to capture the session cookie (e.g.,
PHPSESSID) of a legitimate user. - Maintain Access: After the user changes their password, continue to use the same session cookie to make authenticated requests.
- Verify Persistence: Access the user's profile or admin panel to confirm the session is still valid.
Example Request (using cURL):
curl -X GET "http://target.com/index.php?_a=account" \
-H "Cookie: PHPSESSID=attacker_session_id"
Note: No public exploit code is available. This is a conceptual demonstration.
Blue Team
Detection:
- Monitor for multiple simultaneous sessions for the same user from different IP addresses.
- Alert on password change events that are not followed by a session invalidation.
- Use Web Application Firewall (WAF) rules to detect anomalous session usage patterns.
Hunting:
- Query logs for password change events and correlate with session activity.
- Look for sessions that persist beyond the expected session timeout after a password change.
Mitigation:
- Apply the patch by upgrading to CubeCart 6.5.11.
- Implement additional session management controls, such as:
- Short session timeouts.
- IP-based session binding (though this can be bypassed).
- Multi-factor authentication (MFA) to reduce the impact of session hijacking.
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
- Session Cookie: A
PHPSESSIDcookie that remains valid after a password change. - Log Entries: Password change events without corresponding session invalidation logs.
- Network Traffic: Repeated authenticated requests from an IP address that does not match the user's typical location after a password change.
Example IOC Log Entry:
[2025-03-15 10:00:00] User ID 123 changed password.
[2025-03-15 10:05:00] Session ID abc123 (from IP 192.168.1.100) accessed account.
[2025-03-15 10:10:00] Session ID abc123 (from IP 192.168.1.100) accessed account again.

Remediation & Mitigation
Immediate Actions:
- Upgrade CubeCart: Update to version 6.5.11 or later immediately.
- Force Logout: If upgrade is not possible, manually invalidate all active sessions by clearing the session table in the database (e.g.,
TRUNCATE TABLE sessions). - Monitor Logs: Review access logs for any signs of unauthorized access after password changes.
Long-Term Measures:
- Implement session regeneration on all sensitive actions (password change, privilege escalation, etc.).
- Use short session timeouts (e.g., 15 minutes) and enforce re-authentication for critical operations.
- Deploy a Web Application Firewall (WAF) with rules to detect session anomalies.
- Educate users to log out from shared or public devices and to use password managers.
Patch Verification:
- After upgrading, verify that the
session_regenerate_id()function is called in the password change handler. - Test by changing a password and checking that the old session cookie is invalidated.
