Executive Summary

CVE-2025-6642 is a high-severity (CVSS 7.8) remote code execution vulnerability affecting PDF-XChange Editor. The flaw resides in the parsing of U3D (Universal 3D) files, where an out-of-bounds read occurs due to insufficient validation of user-supplied data. Successful exploitation requires user interaction—the victim must open a malicious file or visit a crafted page. An attacker can leverage this to execute arbitrary code within the context of the current process, potentially leading to full system compromise. No public exploit or patch details are currently available.

CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level

  • CVSS Score: 7.8 (High)
  • Vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H
  • Attack Vector (AV): Local (L) – The attacker must deliver the malicious file locally.
  • Attack Complexity (AC): Low (L) – No special conditions required.
  • Privileges Required (PR): None (N) – No prior authentication needed.
  • User Interaction (UI): Required (R) – Victim must open the file.
  • Scope (S): Unchanged (U) – Exploitation stays within the vulnerable component.
  • Confidentiality (C): High (H) – Full data access possible.
  • Integrity (I): High (H) – Arbitrary code execution.
  • Availability (A): High (H) – Potential for denial of service or system takeover.

Threat Level: High. The vulnerability is remotely exploitable via social engineering, and the lack of a patch increases risk.

Deep Dive & Mechanics

The vulnerability exists in the U3D file parsing module of PDF-XChange Editor. U3D files contain 3D model data, and the parser fails to properly validate the length of user-supplied data before reading it. This leads to an out-of-bounds read, where the parser accesses memory beyond the allocated buffer.

Technical Flow:

  1. An attacker crafts a malicious U3D file with manipulated size fields or data structures.
  2. When PDF-XChange Editor opens the file, the parser reads the corrupted data.
  3. The out-of-bounds read can leak sensitive memory or, when combined with other conditions, lead to code execution.
  4. The attacker can then execute arbitrary code in the context of the PDF-XChange Editor process.

Root Cause: Lack of proper bounds checking in the U3D parsing routine (CWE-125: Out-of-bounds Read).

Vulnerable vs. Patched Code

Since no patch is available, a generic comparison is provided:

Vulnerable Code (Conceptual):

void parse_u3d_data(char *buffer, size_t size) {
    // No validation of size before read
    uint32_t data_size = *(uint32_t*)buffer;
    char *data = buffer + 4;
    // Out-of-bounds read if data_size > size - 4
    process_data(data, data_size);
}

Patched Code (Expected):

void parse_u3d_data(char *buffer, size_t size) {
    if (size < 4) return;
    uint32_t data_size = *(uint32_t*)buffer;
    if (data_size > size - 4) return; // Bounds check
    char *data = buffer + 4;
    process_data(data, data_size);
}

Exploitation & Lab Setup

Red Team (Exploitation)

Lab Setup:

  • Target: Windows 10/11 with PDF-XChange Editor (vulnerable version).
  • Tools: Python, Metasploit (if module available), custom fuzzer.
  • Payload: Malicious U3D file.

Exploitation Steps:

  1. Create a crafted U3D file with an oversized size field to trigger the out-of-bounds read.
  2. Use a heap spray or ROP chain to control execution flow.
  3. Deliver the file via email or web download.
  4. When the victim opens the file, the exploit executes arbitrary code.

Example Payload Generation (Python):

import struct

# Craft malicious U3D file
payload = b'\x00' * 4  # Placeholder for size
payload += b'A' * 1000  # Overflow data
# Add shellcode or ROP chain
with open('malicious.u3d', 'wb') as f:
    f.write(payload)

Blue Team (Defense)

Detection:

  • Monitor for unusual PDF-XChange Editor crashes.
  • Use process monitoring tools (e.g., Sysmon) to detect abnormal memory access.
  • Enable ASLR and DEP to mitigate exploitation.

Prevention:

  • Block U3D file attachments in email gateways.
  • Use application whitelisting to restrict PDF-XChange Editor execution.
  • Deploy endpoint detection and response (EDR) solutions.

Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)

  • File Hashes: (None available yet; monitor for malicious U3D files)
  • Network: Outbound connections from PDF-XChange Editor process.
  • Process: PDFXEdit.exe with abnormal memory access patterns.
  • Registry: Unusual modifications to PDF-XChange Editor settings.
