CVE-2025-68595
Executive Summary
CVE-2025-68595 is a Missing Authorization vulnerability in the Trustindex Widgets for Social Photo Feed WordPress plugin (versions <= 1.8). This flaw allows an unauthenticated attacker to exploit incorrectly configured access control security levels, potentially leading to unauthorized access to sensitive data or functionality. The vulnerability is classified as Medium Severity (CVSS 5.3) and currently has no known patch or public exploit code. As a WordPress plugin vulnerability, it affects the WordPress ecosystem directly and does not involve Apache or Nginx misconfigurations.

Supply Chain & Package Security
This vulnerability resides in a WordPress plugin distributed via the official WordPress plugin repository. Users who installed the plugin from the repository are affected. No package manager (NPM, PyPI, Go, Ruby) is involved.
CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level
- Attack Vector (AV): Network (N) – Exploitable remotely.
- Attack Complexity (AC): Low (L) – No special conditions required.
- Privileges Required (PR): None (N) – No authentication needed.
- User Interaction (UI): None (N) – No user action required.
- Scope (S): Unchanged (U) – Impact confined to the vulnerable component.
- Confidentiality (C): Low (L) – Limited information disclosure.
- Integrity (I): None (N) – No data modification.
- Availability (A): None (N) – No denial of service.
Threat Level: Medium. The low EPSS score (0.0%) suggests active exploitation is unlikely, but the lack of a patch increases risk for exposed instances.
Deep Dive & Mechanics
The vulnerability stems from Missing Authorization (CWE-862) in the plugin's access control implementation. The plugin fails to properly verify user permissions before granting access to certain administrative or data retrieval endpoints. An unauthenticated attacker can send crafted HTTP requests to these endpoints, bypassing intended security checks.
Root Cause: The plugin uses current_user_can() checks inconsistently or not at all for certain AJAX actions or REST API endpoints. This allows any visitor to trigger functions that should require at least edit_posts or manage_options capabilities.
Attack Vector: The attacker sends a GET or POST request to a vulnerable endpoint (e.g., /wp-admin/admin-ajax.php?action=trustindex_social_feed_get_data) without any authentication token or nonce validation.
Impact: Unauthorized access to social feed data, configuration settings, or other sensitive information stored by the plugin. In some cases, the attacker might be able to modify plugin settings if the missing authorization affects write operations.
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
Since no patch is available, we can only analyze the vulnerable code pattern. The vulnerable version likely contains code similar to:
// Vulnerable code (<= 1.8)
add_action('wp_ajax_nopriv_trustindex_social_feed_get_data', 'trustindex_social_feed_get_data');
function trustindex_social_feed_get_data() {
// No capability check
$data = get_option('trustindex_social_feed_data');
wp_send_json_success($data);
}
A patched version would include proper authorization:
// Patched code (hypothetical)
add_action('wp_ajax_trustindex_social_feed_get_data', 'trustindex_social_feed_get_data');
function trustindex_social_feed_get_data() {
if (!current_user_can('manage_options')) {
wp_die('Unauthorized', 403);
}
$data = get_option('trustindex_social_feed_data');
wp_send_json_success($data);
}
The key difference is the removal of nopriv_ (which allows unauthenticated access) and the addition of a capability check.
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team
Prerequisites:
- Target WordPress site with Trustindex Widgets for Social Photo Feed <= 1.8 installed and active.
- Network access to the target.
Exploitation Steps:
Identify Vulnerable Endpoint: Use a web browser or tool like Burp Suite to enumerate AJAX actions. Common patterns include:
/wp-admin/admin-ajax.php?action=trustindex_social_feed_get_data/wp-admin/admin-ajax.php?action=trustindex_social_feed_get_settings
Craft Request: Send a GET request to the vulnerable endpoint without any authentication cookies.
curl -v "http://target.com/wp-admin/admin-ajax.php?action=trustindex_social_feed_get_data"Analyze Response: If the response contains JSON data (e.g., social feed posts, API keys, configuration), the vulnerability is confirmed.
Expected Output:
{
"success": true,
"data": {
"feed_items": [...],
"api_key": "sk_live_XXXXX",
"settings": {...}
}
}

Detection & Response:
Monitor Logs: Check web server access logs for requests to
/wp-admin/admin-ajax.phpwith suspiciousactionparameters (e.g.,trustindex_social_feed_*) from unauthenticated IPs.Harden Plugin: Since no patch exists, consider disabling or removing the plugin until a fix is released.
Implement WAF Rules: Block requests to
admin-ajax.phpthat containaction=trustindex_social_feed_unless they include a valid nonce.Audit User Permissions: Ensure no unauthorized users have elevated privileges.
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
Network IOCs:
- HTTP requests to
/wp-admin/admin-ajax.phpwithaction=trustindex_social_feed_*from unauthenticated sources. - Unusual JSON responses containing plugin configuration data.
- HTTP requests to
File IOCs:
- Presence of the plugin directory:
/wp-content/plugins/social-photo-feed-widget/ - Modified or unexpected files in the plugin directory (if exploitation leads to file changes).
- Presence of the plugin directory:
Log IOCs:
- Web server logs showing 200 responses to
admin-ajax.phpwithaction=trustindex_social_feed_*from IPs not associated with authenticated users.
- Web server logs showing 200 responses to

Remediation & Mitigation
Immediate Actions:
- Disable the Plugin: Deactivate and remove the Trustindex Widgets for Social Photo Feed plugin until a patch is released.
- Implement Virtual Patching: Use a Web Application Firewall (WAF) to block requests to
admin-ajax.phpwithaction=trustindex_social_feed_*from unauthenticated users. - Monitor for Exploitation: Review web server logs for the IOCs listed above.
Long-Term Fix:
- Vendor Patch: Await an official update from Trustindex that adds proper capability checks (e.g.,
current_user_can('manage_options')) and removesnopriv_AJAX hooks. - Alternative Plugin: Consider switching to a different social feed plugin that has a better security track record.
Workaround:
- If the plugin is critical, restrict access to
admin-ajax.phpvia.htaccessor server configuration to only allow authenticated requests (e.g., require a valid nonce).
