Executive Summary

CVE-2025-68913 is a critical PHP Local File Inclusion (LFI) vulnerability discovered in the Miion WordPress theme developed by Zozothemes. The vulnerability stems from improper control of filenames used in PHP include/require statements, specifically CWE-98. An unauthenticated attacker can exploit this flaw to include arbitrary local files from the server, leading to sensitive information disclosure (e.g., /etc/passwd, database credentials, or source code). The vulnerability affects all versions of Miion up to and including 1.2.7. No official patch has been released, and no public proof-of-concept (PoC) code is available at this time.

Supply Chain & Package Security

This vulnerability resides in a WordPress theme distributed via the WordPress ecosystem. Users who installed Miion from the official WordPress theme repository or third-party marketplaces are affected. Since the theme is a PHP application, the supply chain risk includes potential backdoors in unpatched versions. Administrators should immediately audit their WordPress installations for the presence of the Miion theme and consider disabling or replacing it until a patch is available.

CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level

  • CVSS Vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N
  • Base Score: 7.5 (HIGH)
  • Attack Vector: Network
  • Attack Complexity: Low
  • Privileges Required: None
  • User Interaction: None
  • Scope: Unchanged
  • Confidentiality Impact: High
  • Integrity Impact: None
  • Availability Impact: None

The high confidentiality impact combined with no authentication requirements makes this a severe threat for any site using the vulnerable theme.

Deep Dive & Mechanics

The vulnerability exists in the Miion theme's PHP code, likely within a template or plugin file that handles dynamic file inclusion. The theme fails to sanitize user-supplied input (e.g., via $_GET, $_POST, or $_COOKIE) before passing it to a PHP include() or require() function. An attacker can manipulate the filename parameter to traverse directories and include arbitrary files from the server.

Example vulnerable code pattern:

$file = $_GET['page'];
include($file . '.php');

An attacker could request:

http://target.com/?page=../../../etc/passwd%00

The null byte (%00) may be used to terminate the string, bypassing the .php extension append. Modern PHP versions may mitigate null byte injection, but directory traversal remains viable.

Vulnerable vs. Patched Code

Since no patch is available, the following is a hypothetical comparison.

Vulnerable Code (Miion <= 1.2.7):

// In a template file like header.php or functions.php
$template = $_GET['template'];
include( get_template_directory() . '/includes/' . $template . '.php' );

Patched Code (Hypothetical):

// Whitelist allowed files
$allowed_templates = array('header', 'footer', 'sidebar');
$template = $_GET['template'];
if (in_array($template, $allowed_templates)) {
    include( get_template_directory() . '/includes/' . $template . '.php' );
} else {
    // Handle error
    wp_die('Invalid template.');
}

Exploitation & Lab Setup

Red Team (Exploitation)

Prerequisites:

  • Target running WordPress with Miion theme <= 1.2.7
  • No authentication required

Exploitation Steps:

  1. Identify the vulnerable parameter (e.g., page, template, file).
  2. Craft a payload to read sensitive files:
    http://target.com/?page=../../../etc/passwd

  3. Use directory traversal to access WordPress configuration:
    http://target.com/?page=../../../wp-config

  4. For PHP files, append %00 or use path truncation (if PHP < 5.3.4):
    http://target.com/?page=../../../etc/passwd%00

Lab Setup:

  • Install WordPress locally with Miion theme 1.2.7.
  • Use a web server (Apache/Nginx) with PHP.
  • Test with curl:
    curl -v "http://localhost/?page=../../../etc/passwd"

Blue Team (Detection & Defense)

Detection:

  • Monitor web server logs for directory traversal patterns (e.g., ../, %2e%2e/).
  • Look for requests to the vulnerable parameter with suspicious paths.
  • Use WAF rules to block ../ sequences in query strings.

Defense:

  • Disable the Miion theme immediately.
  • Implement a Web Application Firewall (WAF) with rules to block LFI attempts.
  • Apply virtual patching via mod_security:
    SecRule ARGS "@contains ../" "id:1001,deny,status:403,msg:'LFI Attempt'"

Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)

  • Network IOCs:

    • HTTP requests containing ../ or %2e%2e/ in query parameters.
    • Requests to /?page=, /?template=, or similar parameters.
    • Outbound connections from the web server to unexpected IPs (if RFI is also possible).
  • File System IOCs:

    • Unauthorized access to /etc/passwd, /etc/shadow, or wp-config.php.
    • Presence of unexpected files in the web root (e.g., shells).
  • Log IOCs:

    • Web server logs showing 200 responses to directory traversal attempts.
    • PHP error logs with include() failures for non-existent files.

Remediation & Mitigation

Immediate Actions:

  1. Disable the Miion theme and switch to a default WordPress theme (e.g., Twenty Twenty-Four).
  2. Remove the theme files from /wp-content/themes/miion/ to prevent accidental re-enabling.
  3. Audit web server logs for signs of exploitation.

Long-term Mitigation:

  • Monitor the Zozothemes website or WordPress repository for an official patch.
  • If patched, update the theme immediately.
  • Implement a Web Application Firewall (WAF) with LFI rules.
  • Harden the server by disabling allow_url_include in php.ini (if not needed).
  • Use file integrity monitoring (e.g., OSSEC) to detect unauthorized file changes.

Workaround (if theme must be used):

  • Apply a virtual patch via .htaccess:
    RewriteEngine On
    RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} (page|template|file)=.*\.\..* [NC]
    RewriteRule .* - [F,L]
