CVE-2025-9259
Executive Summary
CVE-2025-9259 is an Arbitrary File Reading vulnerability in the WebITR application developed by Uniong. The flaw allows remote attackers with regular privileges to exploit Absolute Path Traversal (CWE-22) to download arbitrary system files. This can lead to unauthorized disclosure of sensitive information, including configuration files, credentials, and other critical data. The vulnerability has a CVSS score of 0.0 (pending official assessment), but based on the impact, it is estimated to be high severity. No public exploit code or patch is currently available.
This record — and 170,000+ others — are available via the ValtersIT API. One endpoint replaces five: NVD + GitHub CVE + CISA KEV + EPSS + Nuclei + Exploit-DB, unified.

Supply Chain & Package Security
This vulnerability is not related to NPM, PyPI, Go, or Ruby ecosystems. It affects a proprietary web application (WebITR) developed by Uniong.
CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level
- Attack Vector (AV): Network (N) – Exploitable remotely.
- Attack Complexity (AC): Low (L) – No special conditions required.
- Privileges Required (PR): Low (L) – Attacker needs regular user privileges.
- User Interaction (UI): None (N) – No user action needed.
- Scope (S): Unchanged (U) – Exploit does not affect other components.
- Confidentiality (C): High (H) – Full file read access.
- Integrity (I): None (N) – No modification possible.
- Availability (A): None (N) – No denial of service.
Threat Level: High (estimated 7.5-8.5 CVSS v3.1 score). The vulnerability allows reading arbitrary system files, which can lead to credential theft, configuration leaks, and further compromise.
Deep Dive & Mechanics
The vulnerability resides in the WebITR application's file retrieval functionality. The application fails to sanitize user-supplied input when specifying file paths, allowing an attacker to use absolute path traversal sequences (e.g., ../../etc/passwd or /etc/passwd) to read files outside the intended web root directory.
Root Cause: The application does not validate or restrict the file path parameter, enabling direct access to the filesystem.
Attack Vector: An authenticated (or unauthenticated if the endpoint is exposed) attacker sends a crafted HTTP request to a vulnerable endpoint (e.g., /download?file=/etc/passwd). The server then reads and returns the contents of the specified file.
Impact: Full read access to any file on the server, including:
/etc/passwd(user accounts)/etc/shadow(password hashes, if readable)- Application configuration files (database credentials, API keys)
- Source code and sensitive business data
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
Vulnerable Code (Conceptual):
# Vulnerable endpoint
@app.route('/download')
def download_file():
file_path = request.args.get('file')
# No validation - directly reads user-supplied path
with open(file_path, 'r') as f:
return f.read()
Patched Code (Conceptual):
import os
# Patched endpoint
@app.route('/download')
def download_file():
file_path = request.args.get('file')
# Restrict to a specific directory
base_dir = '/var/www/webitr/uploads/'
# Resolve absolute path and ensure it's within base_dir
full_path = os.path.normpath(os.path.join(base_dir, file_path))
if not full_path.startswith(base_dir):
return "Access denied", 403
with open(full_path, 'r') as f:
return f.read()
Note: No official patch has been released by Uniong. The above is a recommended fix.
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team
Prerequisites:
- Access to a WebITR instance with a valid user account (or an unauthenticated vulnerable endpoint).
- Knowledge of the vulnerable endpoint (e.g.,
/download,/file,/read).
Exploitation Steps:
- Identify the vulnerable endpoint by fuzzing or reviewing application documentation.
- Craft a request to read a sensitive file:
GET /download?file=/etc/passwd HTTP/1.1 Host: target-webitr.com Cookie: session=valid_session_cookie - If the endpoint requires authentication, ensure the session cookie is valid.
- Read additional files to escalate privileges (e.g.,
/etc/shadow, database configs).
Example using cURL:
curl -b "session=valid_session_cookie" "http://target-webitr.com/download?file=/etc/passwd"
No public exploit code is available. The above is a manual exploitation technique.
Blue Team
Detection:
- Monitor for HTTP requests containing path traversal patterns (e.g.,
../,%2e%2e/, absolute paths like/etc/). - Alert on requests to file download endpoints with suspicious parameters.
- Use the detection rules provided below.
Hunting:
- Search web server logs for requests to
/download,/file,/read, or similar endpoints. - Look for requests with parameters containing
file=,path=,filename=followed by absolute paths or../sequences.
Mitigation:
- Implement input validation and path sanitization (see patched code).
- Restrict file read operations to a specific directory.
- Apply the principle of least privilege to the web application user.
- If possible, disable the vulnerable endpoint until a patch is available.
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
- Network IOCs:
- HTTP requests to endpoints like
/download,/file,/readwith parameters containing absolute paths (e.g.,/etc/passwd,/proc/self/environ). - Repeated attempts to read
/etc/shadow,/etc/passwd, or application config files.
- HTTP requests to endpoints like
- File System IOCs:
- Unexpected access to sensitive files (e.g.,
/etc/shadow,/var/log/auth.log). - Presence of downloaded files in temporary directories.
- Unexpected access to sensitive files (e.g.,
- Log IOCs:
- Web server logs showing 200 responses to path traversal requests.
- Error logs showing file not found errors for non-existent paths.

Remediation & Mitigation
Immediate Actions:
- Disable the vulnerable endpoint if possible, or restrict access to trusted IPs only.
- Implement input validation – Sanitize file path parameters to prevent absolute path traversal.
- Apply the principle of least privilege – Ensure the web application runs with minimal filesystem permissions.
- Monitor logs for suspicious file read attempts.
Long-term Fix:
- Contact Uniong for an official patch.
- If no patch is available, consider migrating to an alternative solution or implementing a WAF rule to block path traversal patterns.
