Technical Analysis

The Accelerate WordPress theme, a commercially available ThemeGrill product, contains a broken access control vulnerability in its enqueue_scripts() function. This function is responsible for enqueueing frontend scripts and stylesheets but improperly handles plugin installation and activation requests. Specifically, it fails to perform a capability check—such as current_user_can('activate_plugins') or current_user_can('install_plugins')—before invoking actions that install and activate the ThemeGrill Demo Importer plugin.

The vulnerability is rooted in the theme's demo import feature, which typically allows administrators to import demo content. Due to the missing capability verification, any authenticated user, regardless of their assigned role, can trigger the demo importer installation routine. The affected code path likely includes an AJAX action handler or a query parameter-based trigger that calls WordPress functions like plugins_api(), install_plugin(), and activate_plugin() without validating user privileges.

Attack surface: The vulnerability is exploitable over the network (AV:N) with low attack complexity (AC:L). Authentication is required (PR:L), but only at Subscriber level—the most basic WordPress user role. No user interaction is needed (UI:N), and the impact is limited to integrity (I:L) with no confidentiality or availability impact. The affected scope is unchanged (S:U).

The ThemeGrill Demo Importer plugin, once installed and activated, imports demo content and configures the theme. An attacker could use this imported content to inject malicious pages, widgets, or customizer settings, effectively defacing the site or planting persistent payloads—all under the pretense of legitimate demo content.

Exploitation Scenarios

Step 1 — Reconnaissance: The attacker scans for WordPress sites running the Accelerate theme using Shodan or Google dorks (e.g., inurl:"/wp-content/themes/accelerate"). They confirm the theme version by inspecting the stylesheet or reading the style.css file (/wp-content/themes/accelerate/style.css). If the version is ≤ 1.5.3, the target is vulnerable.

Step 2 — Account Acquisition: The attacker either registers a new Subscriber account (if registration is enabled) or compromises a low-privilege account via credential stuffing or phishing. Subscriber-level access is sufficient.

Step 3 — Triggering the Flaw: The attacker crafts a request to the vulnerable enqueue_scripts() function. Since the function likely hooks into an AJAX action (e.g., wp_ajax_install_theme_grill_demo_importer) or accepts a request parameter (e.g., ?accelerate_demo_install=1), they send a crafted POST request:

POST /wp-admin/admin-ajax.php HTTP/1.1
Host: victim-site.com
Cookie: [attacker's subscriber session cookie]

action=accelerate_install_demo_importer&nonce=[nonce if not properly validated]

Because the function lacks current_user_can('install_plugins') validation, the request proceeds even from a Subscriber account.

Step 4 — Plugin Installation & Activation: WordPress installs the ThemeGrill Demo Importer plugin from the WordPress plugin repository and activates it. The attacker then triggers the demo import via the plugin's own interface—either directly if they have access, or by sending additional crafted requests that bypass any checks in the demo importer itself.

Step 5 — Post-Exploitation: The imported demo content includes custom pages, menus, and customizer settings. The attacker modifies this content to include malicious iframes, phishing forms, SEO spam, or JavaScript that redirects users to attacker-controlled domains. Since the content is assigned to actual site pages, the malicious payload is served to all visitors. The attacker may also leverage the now-active demo importer to overwrite existing content, causing data loss.

Step 6 — Persistence: The attacker leaves the implanted malicious content in place. Even if they lose access to their Subscriber account, the injected content persists until an administrator manually cleans it. If the theme is updated (which doesn't remove imported content), the attacker's modifications survive.

Impact Assessment

Business Impact: The vulnerability allows authenticated low-privilege users to make unauthorized changes to a WordPress site. The most immediate impact is content integrity—attackers can deface pages, inject malicious code served to visitors, or overwrite legitimate content with spam or phishing material. For business sites, this erodes customer trust, damages brand reputation, and can trigger SEO penalties from search engines detecting injected spam.

Integrity Impact (L): The CVSS vector specifies low integrity impact. This means data is altered, but the attacker cannot control the extent or scope of the modification beyond installing and activating the demo importer plugin. However, the cascading effect of activating the demo importer gives attackers a broader foothold to modify theme settings, pages, and widgets.

Confidentiality Impact (None): The attacker cannot directly read sensitive data through this flaw. However, injected JavaScript could exfiltrate user data (cookies, form inputs) from visitors, creating an indirect confidentiality breach.

Availability Impact (None): The vulnerability does not directly cause denial of service. However, if an attacker overrides critical theme configuration, the site could display broken pages, effectively causing a functional outage.

Affected Systems: All WordPress installations running the Accelerate theme ≤ 1.5.3. Estimates from WordPress theme usage data suggest thousands of sites may be affected. Any WordPress site with subscriber registration enabled or possessing dormant low-privilege accounts is at risk.

Blast Radius: The attack requires an authenticated account, limiting the external blast radius. However, internal threats (disgruntled employees) and attackers who have already compromised a low-privilege account can easily escalate their impact. The severity is moderate but elevated by the fact that the attack chain—right up to full content control—requires no technical sophistication beyond sending a crafted HTTP request.

Mitigation & Patch Guidance

Patch Confidence: 0/4 — UNPATCHED. No patch evidence from any tracked source. The vendor has not released a fixed version as of this writing.

Immediate Mitigations:

  1. Disable Subscriber Registration: If user registration is not required, navigate to Settings → General and uncheck "Anyone can register." This removes the easiest attack vector.
  2. Audit Existing Subscriber Accounts: Review all accounts with Subscriber role. Remove any dormant or suspicious accounts. Consider converting legitimate subscribers to a custom role with fewer capabilities if WordPress is used as a CMS.
  3. Add a Capability Check Workaround: Using a child theme (recommended), override the vulnerable function and add a proper capability check. Add the following to functions.php:
    add_action('init', function() {
        if (isset($_GET['accelerate_demo_install']) || isset($_POST['action']) && $_POST['action'] == 'accelerate_install_demo_importer') {
            if (!current_user_can('activate_plugins')) {
                wp_die('Unauthorized access');
            }
        }
    });

  4. Web Application Firewall (WAF): Deploy the provided Suricata rules or equivalent WAF rules to block POST requests containing action=accelerate_install_demo_importer.

Patch/Upgrade Steps:

  • Monitor the ThemeGrill changelog and the WordPress theme repository for the Accelerate theme updates. Apply any new version above 1.5.3 immediately upon release.
  • Subscribe to ValtersIT WordPress threat alerts for notification when a patch becomes available.
  • Until patched, apply the child theme workaround above and keep the ThemeGrill Demo Importer plugin deactivated if not actively used.

Long-Term Hardening:

  1. Principle of Least Privilege: Regularly audit user roles and capabilities. Ensure only administrators have install_plugins and activate_plugins capabilities.
  2. WordPress Hardening: Enforce strong password policies, enable two-factor authentication for all accounts, and use security plugins with login limiting.
  3. Content Backup: Implement automated daily backups of both files and database to enable rapid recovery from content injection attacks.
  4. Security Monitoring: Configure intrusion detection (Wazuh, Suricata) with the rules provided above. Regularly review access logs for anomalous subscriber activity.
  5. Vendor Engagement: Contact ThemeGrill support to request an ETA for the patch. If unresponsive, consider migrating to a maintained alternative WordPress theme.

Threat Actor Activity: No known exploit-in-the-wild campaigns have been publicly reported for this CVE at the time of writing. The CVE is not on the CISA KEV list. However, given the simplicity of the exploit (a single crafted HTTP request from a Subscriber account), researchers anticipate opportunistic exploitation once PoC code circulates in underground forums. SOC teams should treat this as a high-probability future exploitation target and prioritize the mitigations above.
