CVE-2025-9315
Executive Summary
CVE-2025-9315 is an unauthenticated device registration vulnerability in the MXsecurity Series, caused by Improperly Controlled Modification of Dynamically-Determined Object Attributes (CWE-915). An unauthenticated remote attacker can send a specially crafted JSON payload to the /api/v1/devices/register endpoint, allowing unauthorized device registration. While the vulnerability has limited data modification impact and no direct impact on confidentiality, availability, or integrity of the affected device or subsequent systems, it can be used as a foothold for further attacks. No public proof-of-concept or exploit code is available at this time.

Deep Dive & Mechanics
The vulnerability resides in the device registration endpoint /api/v1/devices/register. The MXsecurity Series fails to properly validate the attributes of dynamically-determined objects when processing JSON payloads. An attacker can craft a JSON request that modifies object attributes in an unintended way, leading to unauthorized device registration. The root cause is improper handling of dynamically-determined object attributes, allowing an attacker to inject or modify attributes that should be restricted.
The attack flow:
- Attacker identifies the MXsecurity device and its registration endpoint.
- Attacker sends a POST request to
/api/v1/devices/registerwith a crafted JSON payload. - The server processes the payload without proper validation, allowing the attacker to register a device with arbitrary attributes.
- The registered device may be used to bypass authentication or gain unauthorized access to certain features.
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
No patch details are available. The vulnerable code likely lacks input validation for JSON object attributes. A patched version would implement strict validation of allowed attributes and enforce authentication for the registration endpoint.
Vulnerable code (pseudo):
@app.route('/api/v1/devices/register', methods=['POST'])
def register_device():
data = request.get_json()
device = Device()
for key, value in data.items():
setattr(device, key, value)
db.session.add(device)
db.session.commit()
return jsonify({"status": "registered"}), 201
Patched code (pseudo):
ALLOWED_ATTRIBUTES = ['name', 'type', 'mac']
@app.route('/api/v1/devices/register', methods=['POST'])
def register_device():
if not request.is_json:
return jsonify({"error": "Invalid content type"}), 400
data = request.get_json()
device = Device()
for key, value in data.items():
if key in ALLOWED_ATTRIBUTES:
setattr(device, key, value)
else:
return jsonify({"error": f"Attribute {key} not allowed"}), 400
db.session.add(device)
db.session.commit()
return jsonify({"status": "registered"}), 201
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team
Lab Setup:
- Deploy an MXsecurity Series device in a controlled environment.
- Identify the IP address of the device.
- Use a tool like
curlorPostmanto send a crafted JSON payload.
Exploitation Steps:
curl -X POST http://<target_ip>/api/v1/devices/register \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d '{"name": "attacker_device", "type": "malicious", "admin": true}'
Expected Result: The device is registered with elevated privileges, allowing the attacker to access restricted features.
Blue Team
Detection Steps:
- Monitor network traffic for POST requests to
/api/v1/devices/register. - Inspect JSON payloads for unexpected attributes (e.g.,
admin,privilege). - Alert on multiple registration attempts from the same IP in a short time.
- Review device registration logs for anomalies.
Mitigation:
- Implement strict input validation for JSON attributes.
- Require authentication for the registration endpoint.
- Use a whitelist of allowed attributes.
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
- Network: POST requests to
/api/v1/devices/registerwith unusual JSON attributes. - Logs: Device registration entries with unexpected fields or from unknown sources.
- File: No specific file IOCs.
- Registry: No specific registry IOCs.

Remediation & Mitigation
- Immediate: Restrict network access to the MXsecurity device to trusted IPs only.
- Short-term: Implement input validation for JSON attributes and require authentication for the registration endpoint.
- Long-term: Apply vendor patch when available. Monitor vendor advisories for updates.
- Compensating Controls: Use a Web Application Firewall (WAF) to block suspicious requests to
/api/v1/devices/register.
