CVE-2025-9495
Executive Summary
CVE-2025-9495 is a critical authentication bypass vulnerability in the Viessmann Vitogate 300 web interface. The device relies entirely on client-side (frontend) controls to restrict access to the administration menu. By using browser developer tools to remove or modify specific HTML elements, an unauthenticated attacker can reveal the hidden admin menu and gain full control over the device. This includes the ability to modify heating system parameters, extract sensitive data, or pivot into the internal OT network. No server-side authentication check is performed, making the attack trivial to execute. No patch is currently available from the vendor.

Supply Chain & Package Security
This vulnerability is not related to any software package registry (NPM, PyPI, Go, Ruby). It is a firmware-level issue in an embedded IoT/OT device.
CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level
- CVSS Vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H
- Base Score: 9.8 (Critical)
- Attack Vector: Network
- Attack Complexity: Low
- Privileges Required: None
- User Interaction: None
- Scope: Unchanged
- Confidentiality Impact: High
- Integrity Impact: High
- Availability Impact: High
The vulnerability allows complete compromise of the device without any authentication. Given the device’s role in building automation and heating control, exploitation could lead to physical damage, service disruption, or lateral movement into OT networks.
Deep Dive & Mechanics
The Vitogate 300 web interface serves an HTML page that includes an administration menu hidden via CSS or JavaScript logic. The server does not validate session tokens or credentials when serving the admin panel; instead, it relies on the client to hide the menu. An attacker can:
- Navigate to the device’s web interface (default IP or discovered via Shodan).
- Open browser developer tools (F12).
- Inspect the HTML structure and locate the hidden admin menu (e.g.,
<div id="admin-menu" style="display:none">). - Remove or modify the
styleattribute or delete the parent element that hides the menu. - The admin menu becomes visible and fully functional, granting access to all device settings.
No server-side authentication is enforced for the admin menu endpoints. The attack requires no credentials, no special tools, and can be performed by anyone with a browser.
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
Vulnerable (Vitogate 300 firmware):
The server returns the admin menu HTML unconditionally but hides it with client-side CSS/JS. Example vulnerable snippet:
<div id="admin-menu" style="display:none;">
<a href="/admin/settings">Settings</a>
<a href="/admin/users">Users</a>
<a href="/admin/firmware">Firmware Update</a>
</div>
Patched (hypothetical):
The server should check for a valid session token before returning admin menu content. Example patched server-side logic:
if session.get('authenticated'):
return render_template('admin_menu.html')
else:
return redirect('/login')
No official patch exists. The vendor has not released a firmware update.
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team (Exploitation)
Prerequisites:
- Target Vitogate 300 device accessible on the network.
- Web browser with developer tools (Chrome, Firefox, Edge).
Steps:
- Identify the device via Shodan or network scan (port 80/443).
- Open the web interface in a browser.
- Press F12 to open developer tools.
- In the Elements tab, locate the hidden admin menu (e.g.,
<div id="admin-menu" style="display:none">). - Right-click the element and select "Delete element" or uncheck
display:nonein the Styles pane. - The admin menu appears. Click any link to access device configuration.
Proof of Concept (PoC) using cURL:
Since the vulnerability is purely client-side, direct HTTP requests won’t reveal the hidden menu. However, an attacker can still access admin endpoints if they know the URLs:
curl http://<vitogate-ip>/admin/settings
If the server does not enforce authentication, this will return the admin page directly.
Blue Team (Detection & Hardening)
Detection:
- Monitor for unusual HTTP requests to
/admin/*paths from unauthenticated sources. - Look for repeated requests to the device’s web interface followed by access to admin endpoints.
- Use network flow analysis to detect connections from unknown IPs to the Vitogate’s web server.
Hardening (until patch is available):
- Isolate the Vitogate 300 on a separate VLAN with strict firewall rules.
- Disable the web interface if not required.
- Use a reverse proxy with authentication (e.g., nginx with basic auth) in front of the device.
- Monitor logs for unauthorized access attempts.
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
Network:
- HTTP requests to
/admin/*paths (e.g.,/admin/settings,/admin/users,/admin/firmware). - Connections from IPs not in the authorized management subnet.
- HTTP requests to
Host:
- Browser developer tools usage logs (if available).
- Modified HTML elements in cached pages (e.g.,
display:noneremoved).
File:
- No specific file-based IOCs; the attack is purely in-memory via browser.

Remediation & Mitigation
Immediate Actions:
- Isolate the device: Place the Vitogate 300 on a dedicated VLAN with no direct internet access.
- Disable web interface: If possible, disable the web management interface and use only local serial/Modbus access.
- Use a reverse proxy: Deploy nginx or Apache with authentication in front of the device. Example nginx config:
server {
listen 80;
server_name vitogate.local;
location / {
proxy_pass http://<vitogate-ip>:80;
auth_basic "Restricted Access";
auth_basic_user_file /etc/nginx/.htpasswd;
}
}
- Monitor logs: Enable logging on the device and monitor for unauthorized access to
/admin/*paths.
Long-Term:
- Contact Viessmann for a firmware patch.
- Consider replacing the device with a more secure alternative if no patch is released.
- Implement network segmentation and zero-trust principles for OT devices.
