Executive Summary

CVE-2026-39053 is a critical XML External Entity (XXE) vulnerability affecting Oinone Pamirs 7.0.0, a Java-based microservice development framework. The flaw resides in the XStream-based XML deserialization logic, specifically within the PamirsXmlUtils.fromXML(...) and ViewXmlUtils.fromXML(...) parsing entry points. An attacker capable of delivering crafted XML payloads to these endpoints can achieve arbitrary file disclosure (reading local files from the server) or Server-Side Request Forgery (SSRF), enabling lateral movement and sensitive data exfiltration. The vulnerability carries a CVSS base score of 6.5 (Medium severity) and an EPSS percentile of 29.2%, indicating moderate exploitation likelihood. No public patch exists as of this report; all deployments of Oinone Pamirs 7.0.0 are vulnerable.

Technical Analysis

The Oinone Pamirs framework (version 7.0.0) integrates XStream, a Java library for serializing objects to XML and back. XStream, by default in older configurations, processes XML external entities as part of its deserialization pipeline. The vulnerability manifests in the XML parsing utilities exposed by the framework: PamirsXmlUtils.fromXML(String xml) and ViewXmlUtils.fromXML(String xml).

Mechanism: When attacker-supplied XML is passed to these methods, XStream's parser resolves external DTDs and external entities without proper confinement. The XML parser does not disable the DOCTYPE declaration or external entity expansion. An attacker crafts a payload such as:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE foo [ <!ENTITY xxe SYSTEM "file:///etc/passwd"> ]>
<object>
  <field>&xxe;</field>
</object>

Upon parsing, the &xxe; entity is expanded to the contents of /etc/passwd (or any local file readable by the application process). For SSRF, the SYSTEM identifier is replaced with http://internal-service:8080/admin, causing the server to make outbound HTTP requests on the attacker's behalf.

Attack Surface: The vulnerable entry points are reachable through any framework REST/SOAP endpoint that accepts XML and delegates to PamirsXmlUtils or ViewXmlUtils. This includes typical microservice APIs, view rendering handlers, and data import/export functions. The attack is server-side and requires no prior authentication if these endpoints are exposed without access control. The CWE-611 classification confirms the root cause is improper restriction of XML external entity references.

Why It Persists: XStream historically ships with XXE exposure if security frameworks (e.g., XStream.setupDefaultSecurity) are not explicitly configured. Developers using Oinone Pamirs often rely on default configuration, inheriting the unsafe XML processing defaults. The vulnerability is present in all distribution channels of version 7.0.0, and as of this report, version 7.0.1 or later containing a fix has not been released.

Exploitation Scenarios

The following attack chain demonstrates how an attacker exploits CVE-2026-39053, assuming the target exposes an XML-accepting endpoint derived from the vulnerable utility classes.

  1. Reconnaissance / Target Identification

    • The attacker scans for Oinone Pamirs-based microservices by using Shodan dorks such as http.component:"Oinone" or http.title:"Oinone Pamirs". Failing direct component detection, HTTP response headers or error pages revealing XStream stack traces serve as fingerprints.
    • The attacker probes common API paths (/api/xml, /import, /view/parse, /pamirs/parse) with benign XML to determine if the framework's parser is invoked.
  2. Weaponization / Trigger

    • The attacker crafts a malicious XML payload targeting file disclosure:
      <!DOCTYPE poc [ <!ENTITY file SYSTEM "file:///etc/passwd"> ]>
      <PamirsView><content>&file;</content></PamirsView>

    • For SSRF, the entity is replaced with SYSTEM "http://169.254.169.254/latest/meta-data/iam/security-credentials/" (AWS metadata endpoint) or a private network service.
    • The HTTP request is sent to the endpoint with Content-Type: application/xml. If the endpoint expects JSON but delegates XML parsing based on content type, the attacker includes the XML in the request body directly to the fromXML parameter.
  3. Execution / Payload Delivery

    • The server receives the XML; XStream parses it, expands the external entity, and the response body contains the file contents or the SSRF response data.
    • For blind SSRF, the attacker observes out-of-band DNS/HTTP callbacks to a controlled server to confirm outbound connectivity.
  4. Post-Exploitation Impact

    • File Disclosure: The attacker steals /etc/passwd, application configuration files (application.yml, database credentials), and source code files, enabling credential harvesting and lateral movement.
    • SSRF: The attacker pivots to internal services—databases (MySQL/PostgreSQL on port 3306/5432), message queues, or cloud metadata endpoints—to extract IAM credentials or execute internal API calls.
    • Persistence: Extracted credentials may permit direct access to the backing store, establishing a foothold beyond the vulnerable microservice.

Impact Assessment

Business Impact: Oinone Pamirs is used to build enterprise microservices; a successful exploitation leads to unauthorized access to sensitive data, including customer PII, internal credentials, and source code. The CVSS score of 6.5 (Medium) understates the real-world risk due to the ease of exploitation (network attack vector, no privileges required—likely AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N based on the description, though the exact vector is UNKNOWN in this report). Disclosure of local files alone justifies prioritization; SSRF broadens the blast radius to the entire internal network.

Affected Systems: All deployments of Oinone Pamirs 7.0.0, regardless of operating system, as the flaw sits in the Java framework layer. Any service exposing XML-parsing endpoints (fromXML) is directly impacted; conversely, instances with no exposed XML routes have a reduced attack surface but remain susceptible to chained attacks via deserialization from other components.

Exploitability Metrics: The EPSS score (0.00365, 29.2% percentile) indicates that while this is not yet a mass-exploited vulnerability, the percentile signals interest from automated scanning tools. The absence of CISA KEV listing and no public PoC suggests the window for proactive patching is open, but the medium attack complexity (if AC:L) and network reachability mean exploitation is straightforward for skilled actors.

Mitigation & Patch Guidance

Patch Confidence: 0/4 (UNPATCHED) — No authoritative patch source has released a fix for CVE-2026-39053. The vendor has not published an advisory, and no patched version (e.g., 7.0.1) exists in tracked package repositories. Organizations must assume the vulnerability remains exploitable in any environment running Oinone Pamirs 7.0.0.

Immediate Mitigations (Compensating Controls):

  1. Disable External Entities: If source code access is available, configure the XStream instance to prohibit external entities. Add xstream.denyTypes(new String[]{"javax.xml.stream.XMLInputFactory"}) or, preferably, set XMLInputFactory.SUPPORT_DTD to false and XMLInputFactory.IS_SUPPORTING_EXTERNAL_ENTITIES to false before parsing. This is the most direct fix until an official patch ships.
  2. Input Validation: Implement a WAF rule (e.g., ModSecurity CRS rule 933120 or custom regex) to block requests containing <!DOCTYPE or SYSTEM in XML bodies. Apply these rules at the reverse proxy level (Nginx/Apache/HAProxy) to filter out malicious payloads before they reach the application.
  3. Restrict Network Egress: On the application server's firewall, block outbound HTTP/HTTPS requests to private IP ranges (RFC 1918) and link-local addresses (169.254.0.0/16) to mitigate SSRF impact. Allow only approved egress destinations.
  4. Endpoint Hardening: Remove or disable endpoints that accept raw XML and delegate to fromXML methods. If business logic requires XML, mandate XML Schema validation (XSD) that explicitly rejects DOCTYPE declarations.

Patch / Upgrade Steps:

  • Monitor the Oinone Pamirs official repository and mailing list for a security advisory. Upon release of version 7.0.1 (or higher), deploy it immediately. Until then, treat the system as compromised if exposed to untrusted networks.
  • If the vendor provides no fix timeline, evaluate the feasibility of forking the PamirsXmlUtils and ViewXmlUtils classes to use a safe XML parser (e.g., Java's built-in DocumentBuilderFactory with external entity disabling) as a permanent remediation.

Long-Term Hardening:

  • Adopt a Secure Software Development Lifecycle (SSDLC) that includes DAST/SAST scans during CI to catch XXE patterns at build time.
  • Use an RASP (Runtime Application Self-Protection) solution that can detect and block XXE payloads in real time.
  • Enforce least privilege on the application's filesystem and network permissions to limit the impact of file disclosure and SSRF if the vulnerability is triggered.
  • Regularly update XStream to the latest version; future XStream releases may include framework-level security defaults that mitigate this issue even without a vendor patch.

Threat Actor Activity: As of this report (2026-01-15), there is no evidence of active exploitation or known threat actor campaigns leveraging CVE-2026-39053. The EPSS percentile (29.2%) and absence from CISA KEV suggest the vulnerability has been identified by security researchers but not yet weaponized on a large scale. Organizations should still treat this as a high-priority remediation item due to the simplicity of exploitation and the sensitivity of data at risk.
