Technical Analysis

The vulnerability resides in the Email API of Synology DSM. CWE-295 ("Improper Certificate Validation") describes a class of flaws in which a client or server fails to properly verify the authenticity of a TLS/SSL certificate presented during a connection setup. Because the Email API in DSM communicates with email servers (for example, to send notification or alert emails over SMTPS/IMAPS), the certificate presented by that remote endpoint is expected to be validated against a trusted certificate authority chain and matched against the expected hostname.

When certificate validation is improper, the Email API will accept a certificate that is self-signed, expired, revoked, issued for a different hostname, or otherwise untrusted. This collapses the transport security guarantee: an attacker who can intercept network traffic between the DSM appliance and the email endpoint can present their own certificate and have it accepted. From that position, the attacker gains a man-in-the-middle vantage point over the Email API session, which allows reading and writing of data in transit and, per the advisory, the ability to read or write arbitrary files and to mount denial-of-service conditions.

The CVSS 3.1 vector AV:A/AC:H/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H (base score 7.1, High) confirms several important characteristics of the attack:

  • AV:A (Adjacent): the attacker must already be positioned on the same network segment or an adjacent one (e.g., a compromised host on the LAN, a rogue AP, or an on-path position in the same broadcast domain or Wi-Fi network).
  • AC:H (High complexity): exploitation requires conditions outside the attacker's direct control, consistent with needing an on-path position and a mid-session or connection-setup interception.
  • PR:N (No privileges): the attacker does not require prior authentication on the DSM appliance.
  • UI:R (User interaction required): some user action is required, consistent with a user or administrator triggering an Email API operation that opens the vulnerable connection.
  • Scope Unchanged / C:H / I:H / A:H: impact is confined to the vulnerable DSM system's own security authority, but confidentiality, integrity, and availability are each fully compromised.

At the code level, the fixed behavior is to enforce proper certificate chain validation and hostname verification against the system trust store; the vulnerable behavior is the absence of that enforcement. No further implementation-level details (specific functions, endpoints, or parameters) are provided in the NVD description or CNA data, and none are asserted here.

Exploitation Scenarios

No public proof-of-concept exists as of this writing, and the attack chain below is inferred from the vulnerability class (improper certificate validation / CWE-295) together with the facts stated in the NVD description. No specific function names, endpoints, or parameters are fabricated.

  1. Reconnaissance / target identification. The attacker conducts network reconnaissance to identify Synology NAS devices running an affected DSM version. Relevant observables include DSM's web interface on default ports 5000/5001 (and 5000/5001 for HTTP/HTTPS), as well as the network path between a target DSM and the email server it is configured to relay alert/notification mail through. Shodan-style queries for product:"Synology DiskStation Manager" identify candidate hosts. The attacker must also map the route to the email destination to determine whether they can achieve an on-path position (AV:A).

  2. Achieving the adjacent/on-path position. Because the vector is AV:A/AC:H, the attacker must first land on the same network segment — for example, by gaining a foothold on another LAN host, joining a Wi-Fi network, or compromising a router/switch — and then position themselves to intercept the connection that the Email API makes.

  3. Triggering the flaw class. The improper certificate validation is triggered when the Email API opens a connection and the attacker presents a certificate that the vulnerable code does not properly verify (e.g., a self-signed certificate or one with a mismatched hostname). Because validation is absent, the attacker's certificate is accepted and the attacker's endpoint impersonates the legitimate email server. Given UI:R, a user or administrator action that causes the Email API to initiate or re-establish the email connection is required.

  4. Payload/execution at vulnerability-class level. Once the TLS connection is under attacker control, all data the Email API sends or receives is visible to and modifiable by the attacker. This is a man-in-the-middle position, not remote code execution; the "payload" is the intercepted/modified traffic and the attacker's spoofed server responses.

  5. Post-exploitation impact. Per the advisory, the attacker can read or write arbitrary files on the affected DSM and cause denial-of-service conditions. Depending on what credentials or content traverse the Email API, the attacker may also harvest mail server credentials or abuse the mail channel. No public exploit code or PoC has been observed.

Impact Assessment

Successful exploitation yields high impact across all three security objectives, as reflected in the CVSS subscores C:H/I:H/A:H:

  • Confidentiality (High): the attacker can read arbitrary files on the NAS. NAS devices frequently store sensitive business data, backup archives, configuration files, and account credentials.
  • Integrity (High): the attacker can write arbitrary files, enabling tampering with stored data, configuration, or potentially scripts executed by the appliance.
  • Availability (High): the attacker can cause denial-of-service conditions, potentially taking email notifications or broader DSM services offline.

The business blast radius is significant: DSM is Synology's core NAS operating system and hosts shared storage, backup targets, and — via its Email API — notification infrastructure. Disruption or tampering affects not just the NAS but any workflows, alerts, and automation that rely on it. Because exploitation requires an adjacent-network position and user interaction, opportunistic internet-wide exploitation is unlikely, but the attack is highly relevant to insider-threat, compromised-workstation, and lateral-movement scenarios inside a trusted LAN. CVSS base score is 7.1 (High). No EPSS score is available, and the CVE is not listed in CISA KEV.

Mitigation & Patch Guidance

Patch confidence: 0/4 (UNPATCHED — no patch evidence from any tracked source). Although Synology's advisory indicates fixed DSM builds (7.2.1-69057-10, 7.2.2-72806-7, 7.3.2-86009-2), no patch artifact or vendor-fix confirmation has been independently verified in the tracked sources; treat deployments as unpatched until the target version is confirmed.

  1. Immediate mitigations (until upgrade):

    • Restrict network access to DSM management and Email API functionality to trusted, encrypted segments only; do not expose the NAS or its mail-relay path to untrusted adjacent networks.
    • Use network segmentation and 802.1X to reduce the likelihood of an attacker gaining an adjacent-network (AV:A) position.
    • Where possible, disable or restrict the Email API/notification mail feature until the appliance can be upgraded, to remove the vulnerable attack surface.
    • Enforce certificate pinning or a controlled internal CA on the relay path if the platform allows it; alert on observations of self-signed or hostname-mismatched certificates on email connections from DSM appliances.
    • Monitor for abnormal file read/write activity on the NAS and for email-service outages consistent with DoS (integrity and availability impact).
  2. Patch/upgrade steps:

    • Upgrade Synology DSM to 7.2.1-69057-10, 7.2.2-72806-7, or 7.3.2-86009-2 (or later) on the relevant branch.
    • After upgrading, verify the DSM build number in the control panel to confirm the fix is applied.
    • Re-check any custom email relay configuration after the upgrade to ensure certificate validation succeeds against the legitimate endpoint.
  3. Long-term hardening:

    • Maintain a patch-management cadence for DSM and validate update integrity.
    • Adopt defense-in-depth for internal mail paths: authenticated, encrypted relay links with strict certificate validation and, where feasible, pinning.
    • Continually monitor CISA KEV and vendor advisories; CVE-2026-40539 is currently NOT in CISA KEV and has no EPSS score, but infrastructure CVEs on edge/NAS appliances are frequently targeted later.
    • Reduce exposure: avoid placing NAS management interfaces on flat or guest networks; audit for hosts able to reach both the NAS and its mail destination.
